Tuesday 5th February @ 8.00pmIFI National presents A Mayo Ciné-Concert This remarkable programme of films from the IFI Irish Film Archive features films made in and about Mayo by amateur and profes-sional filmmakers. It includes:Whaling Afloat and Ashore – the earliest documentary made in Ireland filmed at a whaling station on Iniskea in 1908. Waters of Providence - a film made by Fr Francis Browne SJ at the Foxford Woollen Mills in 1947 which provides a fascinating record of the community at work, at prayer and at leisure. The films will be accompanied by a score devised by internationally renowned musicians Colm and Rossa O Snodaigh of Kíla and harp-ist Cormac de Barra, who will use instrumental, percussive, foley and vocal elements to produce a dynamic fusion of traditional and contemporary music. I’ll Live ‘til I Die is a celebration in words and song of the iconic Delia (1903-1971), the renowned Mayo-born singer who gave the Irish ballad international recognition and ensured its everlast-ing appeal. Musician and teacher Gerry Anderson plays and talks through Delia’s career drawing on his knowledge of the singer as the first inspiration as a folk balladeer and Traditional musician, and looking at her place in Irish music and the people she inspired as Ireland’s first lady of song. A selection of Delia’s favourite songs such as The Spinning Wheel and If I Were a Blackbird will be performed by professional actress and singer Márín O’Donovan; and Delia’s niece, the poet and playwright Carmen Cullen, adds some family reminiscences and reads from her novel Two Sisters Singing, a book inspired by the larger-than-life Delia herself.

A variety of genres will feature from rock to pop, classical to traditional. All are welcome to see and hear for themselves just how talented these young boys are!

Thursday 14th March @ 8.00pmVickers VimyVickers Vimy is a five-piece collective formed by Ed Drea and Fintan Hanley, who write and perform “laid back folk tunes in the style of Paul Simon or Jack Johnson”. The Galway-based band takes its name from one of the most celebrated cross-Atlantic adventures, the flight of the Vickers Vimy from New Foundland to Clifden, Connemara in 1919. Inspired by the story, Ed and Fintan wrote and recorded an album. Produced by Daragh O’Toole and mixed by Ger McDonnell, it features Colm Mac Con Iomaire from The Frames and The Swell Season and a good crew of friends, with well-known Davitt College Music teacher and school Musical Producer Eamonn Mulderrig on drums. Until Saturday 26th JanuaryEmma Bourke - Flora LucidaEmma is a visual artist working mainly in the medium of glass. Her artistic practice is inspired by the natural environment in the west of Ireland where she spent her formative years, and the wild flowers and plants that populate the countryside. Capti-vated by these enchanting plants, Emma creates collections of these wild flowers out of glass, eternally capturing their beauty. “The transparency of the glass is intentionally maintained in or-der to heighten the ambiguity of an organic ecosystem. Adding colour to some petals allows each to become characteristically unique like the environment which inspires their conception.” Emma graduated with a BDes (Hons) from NCAD. One of her Degree pieces was purchased by the National Museum of Ireland, while her Thesis Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka and their glass models of sea creatures was acquired by the Rakow Li-brary, Corning Museum of Glass, New York as part of its Blaschka Archive. Emma received a Scholarship from the Craft Council of Ireland under the Future Makers Awards 2009.

Friday 1st - Saturday 23rd FebruaryOlivia Irvine - Some of These PlacesThis exhibition shows recent paintings in oil and egg tempera on linen by Scottish artist Olivia Irvine. In the artist’s own words: “I get my inspiration from my immediate surroundings, including domes-tic interiors, streets, gardens and family holidays. The actual loca-tions act as a pretext for the paintings, as they are not depictions of the real places but rather a reinvention or reinterpretation of them. The subject matter comes from sketches or paintings made on the spot, but also from studio set-ups, memories past and recent, and my imagination. Pattern, colour and gesture play as much a part as ideas and narrative, as the dynamics of the picture-making process itself throw up choices and surprises. I feel this approach, which mixes fantasy, memory and reality, better reflects how I feel about the psychological issues of place, identity and autobiography. Friday 5th - Saturday 27th AprilVauney Strahan - SubstratumAn exhibition of paintings in oil on board by artist Vauney Strahan, exploring the relationship and the dialogue that exists between our inner world and the spaces that surround us. “As human beings we are continuously weaving our way in and around the physical spaces we occupy,” she explains. “What interests me however is the simultaneous navigation of a world less tangible than this physical realm… the inner landscape, the perceptual architecture of the mind and memory, the emo-tional and the spiritual realms. My chief artistic interest concerns the place where these two landscapes converge, where the subconscious meets the conscious; where mind meets matter.” With degrees in History of Art and Fine Art, since 2006 Strahan has exhibited widely in Ireland and has also participated in group shows in Spain and Germany. She recently moved back to Ireland to take up a Fellowship awarded by Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Co. Mayo. She now works from her studio in Dublin.

Thursday 7th - Saturday 23rd FebruaryThe Missing SparkThe Missing Spark is an exhibition of paintings by 4th Year Art & Design students from GMIT Castlebar. The exhibition was insti-gated and co-ordinated by Seamus Burke, a sufferer of Multiple Sclerosis who is also currently a Fine Art Degree student in his 4th year at GMIT Castlebar Campus. Seamus has been involved with the arts for over 30 years, and has designed and facilitated many art projects for people with learning and associated disabilities.“The Missing Spark is a visual record of the emotions I have experi-enced after my job was recently terminated as a result of my M.S. condition. WIRE ANIMALS SCULPTURE WORKSHOP for 14 years+ to adults with Kate McNamaraSaturday 26th January, 11.30am - 4.00pm This workshop is designed to introduce participants to model-ling, 3D design and sculptural techniques. During the workshop participants will analyse the shape, form, and texture of animals from secondary source materials such as photographs and other visual images. Then by using techniques such as twisting, hand manipulation and wire cutting each participant will cre-ate a free standing creature no bigger than 30cm high. They will also have a chance to look at images of works by wire sculpture artist David Hill. Kate McNamara is an artist and arts educator. She holds a degree in textile design from Loughborough University and a postgraduate certificate in Education in Art and Design from Manchester Metropolitan University. She has extensive experi-ence as an art teacher and workshop facilitator.

Wire Animals Sculpture Workshop takes place in the Linenhall Arts Centre’s Community Arts Room on Saturday 26th January from 11.30am to 4.00pm with 30 minutes break for lunch. COLOUR AND MOOD a visual art workshop for 8-11 YEAR OLDS with Olivia IrvineSaturday 2nd February, 11.00am-12.30pm Join artist Olivia Irvine to explore colour and how artists use it for all sorts of different reasons. You will begin by looking around Olivia’s exhibition Some of These Places in our gallery space and talking about how she uses colour to create a variety of moods in her work. Then you will go to our Community Arts Room where Olivia will give you tips about colour mixing and how to use colour and colour combinations effectively in your art. Working with oil pastels on card, using images of places either remembered or imagined, participants will create small mood pictures.

Olivia Irvine is a Scottish artist who specialises in paint and drawing. She studied art at Edinburgh College of Art and Winchester School of Art in Barcelona. She has multiple solo exhibitions to her credit.

THE EMOTIVE QUALITIES OF COLOUR a visual art workshop FOR ADULTS with Olivia IrvineSaturday 2nd February, 2.00pm-5.00pmA workshop exploring in an in-depth way the use of colour to create mood. Artist Olivia Irvine will lead participants on a tour of her exhibition in the Linenhall Gallery, focusing particularly on her approach to using colour. This will be followed by a hands-on workshop beginning with a short demonstration on colour mix-ing and combining. Then, working with imagery of places, both interior and exterior, using memory, imagination, sketches or photographs, participants will create at least two small paintings or pastels using colour to create different moods. There will be a group discussion at the end where participants are invited to comment about their own and each other’s work.

The Emotive Qualities of Colour visual art workshop for adults takes place on Saturday 2nd February from 2.00pm to 5.00pm. Ever thought you would like to try your hand at painting? Here’s your chance; a relaxed series of workshops with step by step instruction from how to mix colour to the direction of the brush stroke. The workshops will include instruction in drawing, painting, colour and technique and participants will have the chance to work on landscapes, still-lifes or their own individual pieces. The workshops will focus on the use of acrylic paints.

Gráinne O’Reilly is one of Mayo’s most prolific painters. She studied fine art at Sligo Institute of Technology and her work has been exhibited throughout the country, including solo shows at the Linenhall Arts Centre and Westport’s Custom House Studios. She has extensive experience in designing and facilitating visual art workshops.

Introduction to Painting for Adults takes place over six Monday mornings commencing February 4th from 11.00am-1.00pm (con-tinuing February 11th, 18th, 25th, March 4th and 11th). Cost per head for the workshop series is €60. Participants will be required to bring some of their own materials these will be outlined in the first class. SING YOUR PARTY PIECE IN STYLEworkshop series for adults with Anne Marie Gibbons11.00am-1.00pm, for eight Fridays from 8th February Throughout February and March the Linenhall will echo to the sound of adult voices being put through their paces by singing teacher and performer Anne Marie Gibbons. This course will take the form of an introduction to singing for adults. It is de-signed as a confidence-building exercise which will give those taking part the techniques and skills required to sing a song from beginning to end with self-assurance and expression. Anne Marie will coach participants in basic vocal techniques (such as breathing) while also helping them to overcome nervousness to put a song across. Plenty of fun along the way is guaranteed!!Anne Marie Gibbons is a mezzo soprano. She studied at the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, Dublin and subsequently at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester. She was com-pany principal at the English National Opera for three years, and has performed multiple operatic roles including among others Dorabella in Cosi Fan Tutte, Flora in La Traviata, Anna in The Trojans at Carthage and Pippo in La Gazza Ladra. She has a wide-ranging oratorio and concert repertoire, and has extensive experience as a singing teacher.

Sing Your Party Piece in Style takes place over eight Friday mornings commencing February 8th from 11.00am-1.00pm (continuing February continuing 15th, 22nd Feb, and 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd & 29th March). STENCILS AND OBJECTS visual art workshop for 5-7 year olds with Breda Burns over two Saturdays 1.30pm-3.00pm commencing 16th FebruaryHere’s another offering that was hugely successful during our 2012 Summer Camps. Over two weeks explore the wonder-ful world of stencils and mark making with paint. In Week 1 of this workshop you will explore using stencils to make a stunning range of colourful designs, patterns and your own distinctive artworks. Artists have used stencils through the ages, from stencil paintings of hands on cave walls to the works of the Cubists, and from book illustrators and contemporary graffiti artists. In Week 2 you will get to grips with mark making. Marks are a fundamental element of visual art, artists make marks using all sorts of tools and materials from brushes with paint, to knives on clay. For this workshop leave your brushes at home and use an assortment of unlikely objects (anything from cutlery to toy cars!) to explore the world of mark-making with paint.

SEAN NÓS DANCE WORKSHOPSwith Emma O’Sullivan5 Wednesday evenings from 6th March to 3rd AprilJoin sean-nós dancer Emma O’ Sullivan for a series of five dance classes, which will keep you on your toes (and heels!). Emma hails from Connemara. Her late grandfather, Johnny Coyne, gave Emma her first introduction to Irish traditional mu-sic, song and dance as a young child. She won the All-Ireland Sean Nós Dancing title at Oireachtas na Samhna in Letterkenny in 2009 and was a finalist in RTE’s The All Ireland Talent Show in 2010. She dances in a flowing, relaxed and spirited style, and her dancing has been described as a breath of fresh air and an experience to be relished. Described by many as a natural teacher, Emma teaches full-time passing her skills to students in primary, secondary and third level institutions throughout the west.
