dear readers,

Arguably the most important challenge facing linguistics today is the documenta-tion of endangered and poorly described languages. With series like the Mouton Grammar Library and Trends in Linguistics: Documentation, Mouton has long been at the forefront of such efforts. In 2012–2013 we will see the publication of an unusually large number of books on such languages, including grammars of Wandala (spoken in Cameroon and Nigeria), Mian (Papua New Guinea), Mani (Sierra Leone and Guinea), Saramaccan (Suriname and French Guiana), Bardi (northwestern Australia), Yupik (Alaska), Domari (Middle East), Neverver (Vanuatu), Garrwa (northern Australia), and Savo-Savo (Solomon Islands), as well as a book reconstructing the prehistory of the Utian languages (California).

Mouton has recently added several new books series and journals to its already extensive portfolio. These include the series Pacific Linguistics and Studies in Language Change, previously published by the Australian National University; the new monograph series Developments in English as a Lingua Franca and Sign Languages and Deaf Communities; a major new handbook series, the Handbooks of Communication Science; and no fewer than six new journals, covering topics that range from Pragmatics to Chinese as a Second Language.

Last but not least, autumn 2012 will mark the culmination of a large international research project with the publication of the Mouton World Atlas of Variation in English. Maps in this important new language resource will be accompanied by detailed text chapters analyzing the manifestation of over 200 linguistic features in 74 varieties of English around the world.

We trust you will enjoy looking through our catalog as much as we have enjoyed preparing it. Happy browsing!

WÖRTERBÜCHER ZUR SPRACH- UND KOMMUNIKATIONSWISSENSCHAFT (WSK) ONLINE[DICTIONARIES OF LINGUISTICS AND COMMUNICATION SCIENCE (WSK) ONLINE]

WSK Online is a new database of specialized dictionaries covering all the major areas of linguistics and communica-tion science. For learning as well as reference, the diction-aries steer a course between semantic de nition and ency-clopedic knowledge, combining the best of both approaches.

The database offers: 3 Precise de nitions 3 Thorough encyclopedic explanations 3 Synonyms and/or antonyms where applicable 3 Detailed bibliographic information 3 Annual updates with approx. 3,000 articles

Researchers from around the world have joined the WSK Online project, ensuring that the lexicographic output ad-heres to the most rigorous academic standards. The edi-tors are experts in their respective elds. The articles are in German (with English translations of the terms and de nitions) or in English (with German translations of the terms and de nitions). The fi rst 500 articles are available to visitors starting July 2012 on a free trial basis. When nished, the data-base project will contain some 20,000 entries. WSK Online is scheduled for completion in January 2018.

body – lAnguAge – communicAtionAn International Handbook on Multimodality in Human Interaction

Questions of multimodal communication, language and embodiment have become pertinent in a wide range of research areas: cognitive science, psychol-ogy, linguistics, computer science, anthropology, sociology, semiotics, and art. What is lacking is an overview of this fast growing but highly diverse field. This reference work provides an encompass-ing documentation of how body movements relate to language and communication. Chapters authored by leading scholars outline the scope of the phe-nomenon, present current and past approaches, and provide multidisciplinary methods of analysis.

englisH HistoricAl linguisticsAn International Handbook

The handbook English Historical Linguistics offers in more than 130 articles in two volumes a compre-hensive, interdisciplinary and theory neutral over-view of all central aspects of the history of English. The first volume contains detailed descriptions of the individual linguistic levels, from phonology to syntax, semantics and pragmatics, for each period of the language, from Old English to Late Modern English. Moreover, the volume offers chapters on particular topics pertaining to individual periods such as the ‘Great Vowel Shift’, standardization, and do-periphrasis. The second volume takes on a broader perspective and addresses more theoreti-cal concerns. It covers topics such as resources for studying and teaching the history of English, historiography, the history of the discipline itself, theoretical approaches to studying language variation and change, including recent research trends, and the history of Englishes in the twentieth century and around the world.

tHe semitic lAnguAgesAn International Handbook

In collab. with Geoffrey Khan, Michael P. Streck, Janet C. E. Watson

The handbook The Semitic Languages offers a comprehensive reference tool for Semitic Linguistics in its broad sense. It is not restricted to comparative Grammar, although it covers also comparative aspects, including classification. By comprising a chapter on typology and sections with sociolinguistic focus and language contact, the con-ception of the book aims at a rather complete, unbi-ased description of the state of the art in Semitics. Articles on individual languages and dialects give basic facts as location, numbers of speakers, scripts, numbers of extant texts and their nature, attesta-tion where appropriate, and salient features of the grammar and lexicon of the respective variety. The handbook is the most comprehensive treatment of the Semitic language family since many decades.

Sign language linguists show here that all questions relevant to the linguistic investigation of spoken languages can be asked about sign languages. Conversely, questions that sign language linguists consider - even if spoken language researchers have not asked them yet - should also be asked of spoken languages. The HSK handbook Sign Language aims to provide a concise and comprehensive overview of the state of the art in sign language linguistics. It includes 44 chapters, written by leading researchers in the field, that address issues in language typology, sign language grammar, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, sociolinguis-tics, and language documentation and transcription. Crucially, all topics are presented in a way that makes them accessible to linguists who are not familiar with sign language linguistics.

linguistic supertypesA Cognitive-Semiotic Theory of Human Communication

By integrating ideas of Peirce, Bühler, Bakhtin, Piaget and Jakobson, in this book the author defines three linguistic supertypes each operating with ei-ther the situation in reality, the speaker‘s experience of it or his condensed information to the hearer. The theory is built step by step on the basis of a detailed examination of individual languages and their relationship to perception and cognition, their representation of situations and their use in oral and written discourse. The theory offers a completely new understanding of language and its role in perception, cognition and communication.

big events, smAll clAusesThe Grammar of Elaboration

Non-finite clause-like structures such as converb and participial constructions, depictive adjectivals, absolute and comitative small clauses are important means of enriching the description of the event or situation conjured up by the main verb; but they have not been studied in depth from that perspec-tive. The present book takes up that challenge. It throws new light on the interface between syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, and presents new em-pirical findings based on parallel corpora involving English, German, Norwegian, French, Russian, Latin, and Ancient Greek.

locAl modelling of non-locAl dependencies in syntAxSyntactic dependencies like movement, reflexiviza-tion, agreement, control, deletion, case assignment and binding can be non-local, crossing a clause boundary.  A strategy pursued in many contempo-rary theories is to model cases of non-local depen-dencies in a local way, by successively passing on information in small syntactic domains. The present volume brings together eighteen articles that inves-tigate the phenomenon from different theoretical backgrounds, based on evidence from a variety of typologically distinct languages.

quAntitAtive syntAx AnAlysisThis is the first book to bring together the fields of theoretical and empirical studies in syntax on the one hand and the methodology of quantitative linguistics on the other hand. An introduction into the aims and methods of the quantitative approach to linguistics in general and to syntax in particular prepares the reader for the following chapters, which inform about measurement and data acquisi-tion methods and the most common mathematical models for the analysis of syntactic and syntag-matic material. Various examples illustrate how these models are applied and show the correspond-ing results.

tHe syntAx of topic, focus, And contrAstAn Interface-based Approach

This book addresses how core notions of infor-mation structure (topic, focus and contrast) are expressed in syntax. The authors propose that the syntactic effects of information structure come about as a result of mapping rules flexible enough to allow topics and foci to be expressed in a variety of positions, but strict enough to capture certain cross-linguistic generalisations about their distribu-tion. Syntactic and semantic evidence from a range of languages are discussed.

grAmmAticAl replicAtion And borrowAbility in lAnguAge contActThe volume presents new insights into two basic theoretical issues hotly debated in recent work on grammaticalization and language contact: gram-matical replication and grammatical borrowability. The key issues are: How can grammatical replica-tion be distinguished from other, superficially simi-lar processes of contact-induced linguistic change, and under what conditions does it take place? Are there grammatical morphemes or constructions that are more easily borrowed than others, and how can language contact account for areal biases in the borrowing (vs. calquing) of grammatical formatives? The book is a major contribution to the ongoing theoretical discussion concerning the rela-tionship between grammaticalization and language contact on a broad empirical basis.

positions And interpretAtionsGerman Adverbial Adjectives at the Syntax-Semantics Interface

The structural and semantic properties of adverbials represent a still poorly understood area of sentential syntax and semantics in Germanic languages. The volume gives a detailed overview of the system of adverbial adjectives in German, linking the differ-ent types of adverbial usages to different syntactic positions and providing formal derivations for the different usages. The book is of interest not only to anyone working on the linguistics of German but also to all linguists investigating the syntax-semantics interface.

tHe grAmmAticAl-izAtion of ‚give‘ + infinitiveA Comparative Study of Russian, Polish, and Czech

The author analyses the grammaticalization of ‚give‘ with infinitive in causative and modal con-structions in the closely related Slavic languages Russian, Polish and Czech. Drawing on extensive diachronic and synchronic corpus data, the study combines a detailed analysis of the current use of these constructions with a reconstruction of their development. General issues discussed include polarity sensitivity in causatives, types of causee coding, the emergence of non-agreeing diathesis structures in Polish and the role of language contact with German.

combinAtory linguisticsThe book examines to what extent the mediating relation between constituents and their semantics can arise from combinatory knowledge of words. It traces the roots of Combinatory Categorial Gram-mar, and uses the theory to promote a Humean question in linguistics and cognitive science: Why do we see limited constituency and dependency in natural languages, despite their diversity and poten-tial infinity? A potential answer is that constituents and dependencies might have arisen from a single resource: adjacency. The combinatory formulation of adjacency constrains possible grammars.

consonAnt clusters And structurAl complexityThis book uses a very specific topic (consonant clusters) to sharpen the focus on general issues in spoken language structure, particularly syllable structure and phonotactics, as currently investigated by phonetics, phonology and psycholinguistics. It also examines the wider perspective of the structural role of vocalic and tonal elements. A particular strength of the book is the broad range of approaches covered: from diachronic phonological analysis and synchronic typology, via instrumental studies of speech production to online processing by the human perceptual system.

tHe sonority controversyIn linguistics, the notion of sonority is correlated with the relative loudness of speech sounds. Sonor-ity is often claimed to be a governing force in the organization of sounds into syllables. However, there is widespread disagreement about how sonor-ity should be expressed in our theoretical models of speech production and perception. This is the first book focusing entirely on sonority. The list of contributors includes many well-known specialists in the fields of phonology and phonetics. All twelve chapters in the volume present cutting-edge research on the function of sonority in linguistic systems. The controversial nature of the topic is reflected in the diverging opinions about the role of sonority in analyzing the world’s languages.

lAborAtory pHonologyJournal of the Association for Laboratory Phonology

Laboratory phonology represents the scien-tific study of the elements of spoken and signed language, their organization, their grammatical function, and their role in speech communication. Research in laboratory phonology uses labora-tory or experimental methods and is grounded in quantitative analyses of empirical data from diverse languages. The laboratory phonology approach also extends naturally to the parallel investigation of manual signs as the encoding elements of signed languages. Laboratory phonology is at the leading edge of the general shift towards experimental and quantitative approaches to the study of language across the discipline of linguistics. The Laboratory Phonology journal publishes research on phonology from a range of disciplinary perspectives including linguistics, psychology, speech & hearing science, communication science, computer science, electri-cal & computer engineering, and other related fields. The journal publishes select papers from the Laboratory Phonology conferences, and also invites regular submissions.

It cov-ers the central theories as well as concepts and top-ics characteristic of mainstream pragmatics, i.e. the most widespread approach to the ways and means of using language in authentic social contexts. The articles provide both state of the art reviews and critical evaluations of research in pragmatics. Topics are thus not only considered within their scholarly context but are also critically evaluated from current perspectives.

cognitive prAgmAticsSpeakers tend to compose their utterances in such a way that the message they want to get across is hardly ever fully encoded by the meanings of the words and the grammar they use. Instead speakers rely on hearers adding conceptual and emotive con-tent while interpreting the contextually appropriate meanings and intentions behind utterances. This insight, which is of course particularly relevant in all kinds of indirect, figurative or humorous talk, lies at the heart of the linguistic discipline of prag-matics. If pragmatics is the study of meaning-in-context, then cognitive pragmatics can be broadly defined as encompassing the study of the cognitive principles and processes involved in the construal of meaning-in-context. This volume is the first to systematically survey this terrain from a wide range of perspectives. It collects state-of-the-art contributions by leading experts from the fields of pragmatics, psycholinguistics, cognitive linguistics, clinical linguistics and historical linguistics.

This subfield of pragmatics encompasses sociolinguistic studies that focus on how pragmatic and discourse features vary according to macro-sociological variables such as age, gender, class and region (variational pragmat-ics), and discourse/conversation analytical studies investigating variation according to the activity engaged in by the participants and the identities displayed as relevant in interaction. The volume also covers studies in linguistic pragmatics with a more general socio-cultural focus, including global and intercultural communication, politeness, criti-cal discourse analysis and linguistic anthropology. direct beliefAn Essay on the Semantics, Pragmatics, and Metaphysics of Belief

Jonathan Berg argues for the Theory of Direct Be-lief, which treats having a belief about an individual as an unmediated relation between the believer and the individual the belief is about. After a critical review of alternative positions, Berg uses Grice‘s theory of conversational implicature to provide a detailed pragmatic account of substitution failure in belief ascriptions and goes on to defend this view against objections, including those based on an un-warranted „Inner Speech“ Picture of Thought. The work serves as a case study in pragmatic explana-tion, dealing also with methodological issues about context-sensitivity in language and the relation between semantics and pragmatics.

interculturAl prAgmAtics

Intercultural Pragmatics is a fully peer-reviewed fo-rum for theoretical and applied pragmatics research. The goal of the journal is to promote the develop-ment and understanding of pragmatic theory and intercultural competence by publishing research that focuses on general theoretical issues, more than one language and culture, or varieties of one language. Intercultural Pragmatics encourages ‘intercultural-ity’ both within the discipline and in pragmatic research. It supports interaction and scholarly debate between researchers representing different subfields of pragmatics including the linguistic, cognitive, social, and interlanguage paradigms. In addition to ar-ticles, the journal also publilshes interviews, debates, rebuttals, and research statements from leading theoreticians and researchers. The intercultural per-spective is relevant not only to each line of research within pragmatics but also extends to several other disciplines such as anthropology, theoretical and ap-plied linguistics, psychology, communication, socio-linguistics, second language acquisition, and bi- and multilingualism.  Intercultural Pragmatics makes a special effort to cross disciplinary boundaries. It provides a forum for researchers who are looking for new tools and methods to investigate human languages and communication to better understand the role of pragmatic competence in language acqui-sition and the process of communication.  lAnguAge English

culturAl semAntics And sociAl cognitionA Case Study on the Danish Universe of Meaning

Words do not emerge in a cultural vacuum. They are revealing of speakers‘ values, cognitive prefer-ences and social practices. With an engaging study of Danish cultural keywords, this book offers a new framework for understanding language-particular universes of meaning and lays the ground for com-parative research into the diversity of semantic and cultural systems in contemporary Europe. The book is of compelling interest to anyone interested in language and cultural values, as well as for students and scholars in Scandinavian and European studies.

JournAl of literAry semAnticsAn International ReviewFounded by: Trevor Eaton

The aim of the Journal of Literary Semantics is to concentrate the endeavors of theoretical linguistics upon those texts traditionally classed as „literary“, in the belief that such texts are a central, not a peripheral, concern of linguistics. The Journal of Literary Semantics, founded by Trevor Eaton in 1972 and edited by him for thirty years, has pio-neered and encouraged research into the relations between linguistics and literature. It is widely read by theoretical and applied linguists, narratologists, poeticians, philosophers and psycholinguists. JLS publishes articles on all aspects of literary seman-tics. The ambit is inclusive rather than doctrinaire. The journal publishes articles of a philosophical or theoretical nature that attempt to advance our understanding of the structures, dynamics, and significations of literary texts. This includes articles that relate the study of literature to other disciplines such as psychology, neurophysiology, mathematics, and history, as well as articles dealing with the edu-cational problems inherent in the study of literature. Journal of Literary Semantics is a peer-reviewed journal of international scope.

While the role of metaphor in economics and busi-ness is substantiated in multiple research articles no comprehensive book-length study has appeared. The book gives a comprehensive overview of the field and detailed studies on its main branches - metaphor in economic theory and history, in the introduction of coinage and in business contexts and practices. The global perspective of world-wide researchers, spanning different languages and cultures, provides a wealth of information, placing existing research within a consistent and coherent perspective and opening up new vistas.

creAtivity And tHe Agile mindA Multi-Disciplinary Study of a Multi-Faceted Phenomenon

Creativity is a highly-prized quality in almost any domain of human endeavor, whether one is crafting tangible objects from physical materials, or mental objects from concepts, words, pictures and musical notes. It is a diverse, multi-faceted phenomenon that demands a diverse, multi-disciplinary perspec-tive. By bringing together a wide range of creative producers and consumers, in domains as diverse as cognition, language, music, gesture, image and computation, this volume offers the student of cre-ativity a new and exciting perspective whose many facets form a comprehensive and coherent whole.

sensuous cognitionExplorations into Human Sentience: Imagination, (E)motion and Perception

The main topic discussed throughout the volume is the indissoluble relationship between body, mind and culture. By emphasizing the sensuous quality of human cognition, i.e. what Howes (2003: XVII) calls „the relation of the verbal to other ‚nonverbal‘ (or sensual) registers of communication“, the con-tributions in this book revisit the notion of embodi-ment by paying particular attention to its sensuous dimension without losing sight of its cultural and cognitive components.

incipient productivityA Construction-Based Approach to Linguistic Creativity

How do speakers vary established patterns of language use and adapt them to novel contexts of application? This study presents a usage-based ap-proach to linguistic creativity: combining detailed qualitative with large-scale quantitative analyses of corpus data, it traces the emergence of partial pro-ductivity in clusters of conventional collocations. Synthesising insights from research on language acquisition, variation and change, it is argued that creative extensions of linguistic conventions are intrinsically bound up with aspects of memory and repetition.

A grAmmAr of sArAmAccAn creoleSaramaccan has been central to various debates regarding the origin and nature of creole languages. Being the most removed of all English-based creoles from European language structure in terms of phonology, morphology and syntax, it has been seen as one of the most extreme instantiations of the creolization process. This is the first full-length description of Saramaccan. The grammar docu-ments, in particular, a valence-sensitive system of indicating movement and direction via serial verb constructions, hitherto overlooked amidst the gen-eralized phenomenon of serialization itself.

Drawing on an extensive corpus of field recordings collected between 2004 and 2008, the analysis reveals a very interesting phonological sys-tem with six prenasalized segments, rich systems of possession, tense/aspect/mood marking, valence change, and verb serialization. The grammar is of interest to specialists in Oceanic and Austronesian linguistics, as well as to general linguists, espe-cially those interested in linguistic typology.

It is maxi-mally accessible by tabulating the data and insert-ing frequent cross-references. Dictionary entries are in the alphabetical order of the deepest reconstruc-tion in the set, and there is an English-Utian section at the end of the volume. Yokuts (or Proto Yokuts) is also inserted where there is a resemblance. This strategy is especially helpful for those who wish to use the volume for remote comparison. formAtionAl units in sign lAnguAgesSign languages and spoken languages have many fascinating differences, caused primarily by the reaction of the human mind to different modalities, but also by some important social differences. This book examines the effects of these and other differ-ences on sign language phonology and phonetics using observation, experimentation and theory. Languages examined include Asian, Middle East-ern, European and American sign languages, and language situations include home signers and small village signers, children, gesturers, adult signers and non-native signers.

sign lAnguAges in villAge communitiesAnthropological and Linguistic Insights

The book is a unique collection of research on sign languages that have emerged in rural communities with a high incidence of, often hereditary, deaf-ness. These „village sign languages“ represent the latest addition to the comparative investigation of languages in the gestural modality. With analyses and primary data from eleven different rural com-munities, the volume represents the first concerted effort by leading experts in both anthropology and linguistics to capture the social dynamics of „deaf villages“. The chapters address pertinent issues in contemporary linguistics, such as cross-modal contact situations, typological diversity across sign languages and the impact of language modality on linguistic structure.

Bringing together the research fields of sign language linguistics and information structure, this book focuses on the realization of modal and focus particles in German Sign Language, Sign Language of the Netherlands, and Irish Sign Language. The study analyzes professionally elicited data with regard to nonmanual features expressed by articulators such as the body, head, and face, and accounts for the results within existing theoretical models. The analyses contribute to recent debates about information structure and the syntax-prosody interface. Thus, this book is of special interest to both sign and spoken language linguists.

The volume is a collection of thirteen papers given at the “Third Syntax of the World’s Languages” conference, complemented with four additional papers as well as an introduction by the editors. All contributions deal with clause combining, focusing on one or both of the following two dimensions of analysis: properties of the clauses involved, types of dependency. The studies are data-driven and have a cross-linguistic or typological orientation. In addition to survey papers the volume contains in-depth studies of particular languages, mostly based on original data collected in recent field work.

linguistics of vietnAmeseAn International Survey

This volume, the first of its kind, is an international survey of linguistic research into Vietnamese. Viet-namese, one of the major languages of South East Asia, is considered a particularly interesting case of an isolating language among linguists of different persuasions. Up-to-date information in print about its linguistic system which is both detailed and covers a broad range of topics has been unavail-able. The book strives to fill this gap. General linguists, typologists and researchers specializing in languages of (South) East Asia will welcome the volume as a reliable reference for their work.

linguistic typology

Linguistic Typology distinguishes itself as a forum for the typological community, catering to its special professional needs. In particular, these concern the empirical dimensions of the typological enterprise and the ensuing demands to coordinate research and keep track of a profusion of data and results. Therefore, Lingustic Typology specifically encourages informed dialogue and the proper recording of past and present achievements.

null pronounsMost natural languages display an inventory of pronominal elements that obligatorily or optionally remain phonologically null in a few, in many or even in all syntactic surroundings. The authors of the papers compiled in this book analyse such null pronouns in a synchronic and diachronic way and recover the specific morphological and syntactic prerequisites for their origin and insertion.

scribes As Agents of lAnguAge cHAngeThe majority of our evidence for language change in pre-modern times comes from the written output of scribes. The present volume deals with a variety of aspects of language change and focuses on the role of scribes. The individual articles, which treat different theoretical and empirical issues, reflect a broad cross-linguistic and cross-cultural diversity. The languages that are represented cover a broad spectrum, and the empirical data come from a wide range of sources. This book provides a wealth of new data and new perspectives on old problems, and it raises new questions about the actual mecha-nisms of language change.

lexicAl And structurAl etymologyBeyond Word Histories

This pioneer volume assembles thirteen etymologi-cal studies covering a broad range of languages, focusing in particular Australian Indigenous languages. Etymology is understood in a broad sense as a type of historical research that aims at investigating the origin of a word (lexical etymol-ogy) or structure (structural etymology). The phe-nomena investigated in the contributions comprise Australian Indigenous place names and kinship terms, constructions and word histories in Oceanic languages, typological investigations and papers on the methodology of etymological research.

This book presents a historical and comparative syntactic analysis of Spanish prepositional clauses – traditionally called complement and adverbial clauses. This study examines the properties behind the evolution of clauses introduced by preposi-tions in Spanish, including clausal nominality, argumenthood and preposition optionality, devoting particular attention to the nature and constraints of comparable constructions in other past and present European languages. It argues in favor of cross-linguistically valid categories and explanations.

ortHogrApHies in eArly modern europeThis volume provides, for the first time, a pan-European view of the development of written languages at a key time in their history: that of the 16th century. The major cultural and intellectual upheavals that affected Europe at the time - Hu-manism, the Reformation and the emergence of modern nation-states - were not isolated phenome-na, and the evolution of the orthographical systems of European languages shows a large number of convergences, due to the mobility of scholars, ideas and technological innovations throughout the period.

processes And pro-cess-orientAtion in foreign lAnguAge teAcHing And leArningThere can be no products without processes. Though a generalization, this statement encapsu-lates the importance of process-oriented approaches in language teaching and learning. In recent decades, researchers and practitioners alike are in-creasingly focusing their attention on: 1) the learner as the active subject and the internal processes that constitute his/her learning leading to communica-tive competence; 2) teaching approaches that reflect this view of language learning; and 3) factors such as the sociocultural context, social interactions and discourse, and individual learner characteristics and differences. This book examines and reflects these recent paradigm shifts.

perspectives on individuAl cHArAc-teristics And foreign lAnguAge educAtionLearner characteristics have been at the center of second language acquisition and foreign language education research in response to the puzzling questions: Why are there often large differences in second language (L2) learning achievement and why do many learners, though proficient first language speakers, not succeed in learning a L2? The papers in this book explore and challenge the three key factors in individual difference research: language aptitude, language learning strategies and motivation.

Any questions?Identity Construction in Academic Conference Discussions

Academics go to conferences for two main reasons: first, to discuss their research; second, and just as importantly, to negotiate their own standing in the scientific community. This book shows how academics in the humanities use conference discus-sions as a forum to co-construct both their own and each other’s professional identities. While at first sight the researchers seem to be simply asking and answering questions, the detailed sequential analyses reveal many subtle underlying strategies adopted to display and negotiate claims of exper-tise, seniority and competence.

identity in (inter)ActionIntroducing Multimodal (Inter)action Analysis

Norris provides an important contribution to the examination of identity in this book on the theoreti-cal and methodological approach called multimodal interaction analysis. The book moves beyond the traditional discourse analysis focus on spoken language to examine the interplay of broader com-municative modes that work together with language use. This longitudinal ethnographic study of two women living in Germany shows how multimodal interaction analysis offers a finer grained holistic analysis of identity construction through context.

The acquisition of Mandarin Chinese, one of the most important and widely spoken languages in the world today, is the focus of this innovative study. It describes the rise of Chinese as a global language and the many challenges and opportunities associ-ated with learning it. The collaborative, multiple-case study and cross-case analysis is presented from three distinct but complementary theoretical and analytic perspectives: linguistic, sociocultural, and narrative. The book reveals fascinating dimen-sions of Chinese language learning based on vivid first-person accounts (with autobiographical narra-tives included in the book) of adults negotiating not only their own and others‘ language and literacy learning, but also their identities, communities, and trajectories as users  of Chinese.

blending spAcesThe Interplay of Languages, Cultures and Minds in Second Language Learning

This book comprehensively analyzes the develop-ment of interculturally blended third spaces by the second language learner, beginning with the linguistic and sociocultural imprints of the first language and culture on the mind and culminating in a phase-model of the development of intercul-tural competence. The focus of the book is on the gradual development of interculturally blended third spaces in the mind of the learner as genuinely new bases for construction.

Applied linguistics review

Applied Linguistics Review (ALR) is a peer-reviewed journal that aims to serve as a testing ground for the articulation of original ideas and ap-proaches in the study of real-world issues in which language plays a crucial role, by bringing together critical reflections of current debates and new theo-retical and empirical research. The issues dealt with in ALR range from aspects of the linguistic and communicative competence of the individual such as bilingualism and multilingualism, first or second language acquisition, literacy, language disorders, to language and communication related problems in and between societies such as linguistic discrimina-tion, language conflict, communication in the work-place, language policy and language planning, and language ideology. Articles that not only report new research findings but also engage in philosophical and methodological debates and point to directions of future research are particularly welcome.

The Chinese Journal of Applied Linguistics (CJAL) (formerly known as Teaching English in China – CELEA Journal) was created in 1978 as a newsletter by the British Council, Beijing. It is the affiliated journal of the China English Language Education Association (founded in 1981 and now the Chinese affiliate of AILA [International Associ-ation of Applied Linguistics]). The Chinese Journal of Applied Linguistics is the only English language teaching (ELT) journal in China that is published in English, serving as a window to Chinese reform on ELT for professionals in China and around the world. The journal is internationally focused, fully refereed, and its articles address a wide variety of topics in Chinese applied linguistics which include – but also reach beyond – the topics of language education and second language acquisition. Begin-ning with volume 34 in 2011, the journal is now co-published by De Gruyter Mouton, the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (FLTRP), and the Cultural and Education Section of the Brit-ish Embassy. De Gruyter Mouton is responsible for the sales and distribution of the journal outside of China.

The European Journal of Applied Linguistics (Eu-JAL) focuses on the particular concerns of applied linguistics in European contexts, both by address-ing problems that are typically relevant for the lin-guistic situation in Europe, from those on the level of the EU as a pan-national body down to the level of the individual, and by examining topics broached by or discussed in European applied linguistics in particular. In addition to resulting from an episte-mological stance, EuJAL is a logical outcome of the regionalization policy of the Association Internatio-nale de Linguistique Appliquée(AILA), supporting the societies‘ commitment to regionalization by focusing on the European language space and by giving applied linguists from this regional context an adequate forum. EuJAL is part of the joint activi-ties of the European AILA affiliates.

lAnguAge Acquisition And tHe functionAl cAtegory systemFiniteness, as a concept of information structure, determines the perspective from which the present investigation has been carried out. The linguistic status of finiteness in learner languages changes as a function of language development. This accounts for the fact that at consecutive stages of acquisition finiteness is expressed differently. Finiteness, as it plays a role at different stages of development, serves thus as the anchoring point from which the dynamics of the process of language development both in L1 and L2 learners can be explained. The present study shows that in this process the auxil-iary verb (heb/heeft) serves a crucial role due to its function as a topicalization device.

This book is the first publication on record that systematically and comprehensively addresses the acquisition and development of Cantonese in early childhood. It draws upon evidence from up-to-date reviews of associated literature, on the outcomes of numerous research studies conducted by the authors and on the outcomes of an in-depth study of the largest corpus of early childhood Cantonese. To supplement and illuminate published trends in the literature, carefully gathered reliable and valid empirical data are critically scrutinized. The evidence is used to clarify and examine theoretical assumptions and to outline putative developmental trends in early childhood Cantonese pragmatics.

tHe Acquisition of germAnIntroducing Organic Grammar

The theory of Organic Grammar is applied to four decades of work on children’s and immigrant L2 learners’ acquisition of German word order and inflectional morphology. New data from a longitu-dinal study of ab initio secondary school students reveals bottom-up acquisition of syntactic structure during their exchange year in Germany. Their natu-ralistic acquisition process, with stages described for the first time in L2 acquisition, is highly similar to that of younger learners. This has important implications for German teaching and for Universal Grammar and acquisition.

Debate regarding the ability of children with autism to acquire verbs is both limited and inconclusive. This book explores this understudied area of language development in autism to answer the question: How do children with autism learn the meaning of verbs? The approach presents a critical survey of qualitative and quantitative research on verb acquisition in autism, assessing the theories of language acquisition in typical development, including available empirical research. This investigation is among the first studies of its type, offering new insights into the process of language acquisition in autism.

Acquisition reversAlThe Effects of Postlingual Deafness in Yoruba

This is the first comprehensive account of pro-longed hearing loss and its impact on a language that was once spoken fluently. The reader is intro-duced to a significant deaf population — Yoruba speakers who have been profoundly deaf for more than twenty years and who have no access to hear-ing aids or speech therapy. These speakers exhibit language loss patterns which mirror acquisition stages in the speech of Yoruba children. This simi-larity argues for a link between language loss and first language acquisition, and shows that prolonged hearing loss results in the reversal of language.

lAnguAge-specific fActors in first lAnguAge AcquisitionThe Expression of Motion Events in French and German

A growing number of studies have begun to exam-ine the influence of language-specific factors on language acquisition. During language acquisition, German children from six years on use structures that are similar to those of adults in their language group and also encode all semantic components from an early age. In striking contrast, French children up to ten years have difficulties producing some of the complex structures that are necessary for the simultaneous expression of several semantic components. Nonetheless, in addition to these strik-ing cross-linguistic differences, the results of this study also clearly show similar developmental pro-gressions in other respects, suggesting the impact of general developmental determinants.

pArAdigm sHift in lAnguAge plAnning And policyGame-Theoretic Solutions

The book proposes a paradigm shift in language planning and language policy in Africa. The new democratic model for language planning has sev-eral assets over the traditional hegemonic language of wider communication (LWC) model: It does not endanger minority languages, nor does it endanger social cohesion in multilingual countries; it is less costly and makes literacy in the mother tongue mar-ketable. The theory that undergirds the democratic model is the Strategic Game Theory.

linguistic diversity in europeCurrent Trends and Discourses

This book, which emerges in the context of the European research network LINEE (Languages in a Network of European Excellence), is concerned with European multilingualism both as a political concept and as a social reality. It features cutting-edge studies by linguists and anthropologists who perceive multilingualism as a discursive phenom-enon which can be revealed and analyzed through empirical fieldwork. The book presents a fresh perspective of European multilingualism as it takes the reader through key themes of social conscious-ness – identity, policy, education, economy – and relevant societal levels of organization (European, national, regional).

This volume continues the Dialects of English series, considering the establishment of English in what is now the Republic of Ireland. Discussions of phonology, syntax, the lexicon, and discourse focus on traditional dialect, with further reference to col-loquial Irish English, the use of dialect in literature, and the standard language. Irish English – forged in part by an ever-changing relationship with the Irish language – is considered in its local, national, and international aspects.

Data is drawn from a wide range of languages and communica-tive contexts, ranging from schoolrooms to internet discussion boards. The focus is on the way that spelling as a practice and as a focus of ideologi-cal debate relates to social, political and cultural systems, both reflecting and sometimes creating identities as well as relationships of both equality and inequality.

The volume reconstructs the coming-into-being of the English native speaker in the second half of the nineteenth century in order to probe into the origins of the problems surrounding the concept today. A corpus of texts which includes not only the classics of the nineteenth-century linguistic literature but also numerous lesser-known articles from periodi-cal journals of the time is investigated by means of historical discourse analysis in order to retrace the production and reproduction of this particularly important linguistic ideology.

Music intrudes to our most intimate subjectivity, thus making it a privileged field to which so-called „existential semiotics“, a new theory and philoso-phy developed by the author himself, may be ap-plied. The volume reveals the depths of Wittgenstein‘s soul-searching writings – his „new“ philoso-phy – by concentrating on fragments in ordinary language and using few technical terms. It applies Wittgenstein‘s methodological tools to the study of multilingual dialogue in philosophy, linguistics, theology, anthropology and literature. Translation shows how the translator‘s signatures are in conflict with personal or stylistic choices in linguistic form, but also in cultural content. This volume undertakes the „impossible task“ of uncovering the reason-ing of Wittgenstein‘s translated texts in order to construct, rather than paraphrase, the ideal of a terminological coherence.

dynAmics of contAct-induced lAnguAge cHAngeThe volume deals with previously undescribed morphosyntactic changes appearing in contact settings. Contact-induced changes are dynamic and multiple, involving internal change as well as historical and sociolinguistic factors. Through a multifaceted methodology, the volume takes a fine-grained approach with its roots in a typological perspective. The chapters investigate topics such as the role of multilingual speakers, the differences between contact-induced change and change in en-dangered languages, and the relationship between contact-induced change and internal change.

origins of A creoleThe History of Papiamentu and Its African Ties

This study embarks on the intriguing quest for the origins of the Caribbean creole language Papia-mentu, casting new and long-lasting light on the issue. Embedding exhaustive and rigorous linguis-tic comparisons in a detailed and novel historical framework, the study convincingly argues that Papiamentu is genetically related to the Portuguese-based creoles of the Cape Verde Islands, Guinea-Bissau, and Casamance (Senegal).

This volume moves the investigation of World Englishes beyond the processes of indigenization and evolution, focusing on the emergence of native speakers and their role in shaping the norms and standards of postcolonial varieties. Using data from L1 speakers of Cameroon English and Cameroon Pidgin English, the authors reassess the place of contact vis-à-vis ecological and sociocultural pro-cesses through innovative frameworks that provide the emic insights into postcolonial settings needed to complement and expand on the focus of previous research. This fascinating new perspective is of interest to linguistics scholars.

repertoires And cHoices in AfricAn lAnguAgesAfrica is one of the hotspots of linguistic diversity, and most African languages are spoken by multi-lingual communities. The persistence of multilin-gualism and the linguistic creativity are striking, especially against the backdrop of “language death” and expanding monolingualism elsewhere in the world. This volume deals with multilingualism as a cultural technique, register variation and the mul-tiplicity of language ideologies, and the dynamics of linguistic change in Africa’s minority languages. It argues that that in terms of multilingualism and language survival, Africa can serve as a positive model.

As a result of globalization, higher education institutions throughout the world are adopting English for parts of their education. Higher educa-tion is becoming increasingly international and thus linguistically diverse, for educational, idealistic and financial reasons. This book presents a much-need-ed description of English as a lingua franca (ELF) from an international university setting and focuses on form and pragmatic issues, using authentic spoken data. It provides useful insights into how communicative effectiveness can be achieved in spoken lingua franca communication.

tHe englisH it-cleftA Constructional Account and a Diachronic Investigation

The English it-cleft is noted for its non-standard structure and for its unusual pragmatic and discourse-functional properties. This book presents a constructional account of the English it-cleft which is based on evidence from three main areas: (a) the concept of specificational meaning, (b) the existence of predicational (and proverbial) it-clefts, and (c) the early, historical it-cleft data. Featuring a sizeable diachronic component, the book con-tributes to the limited (and largely unchallenged) literature on the history of the English it-cleft.

entrencHment in usAge-bAsed tHeoriesWhat Corpus Data Do and Do Not Reveal About The Mind

This work deals with the relationship between frequency in natural language use and the entrench-ment of complex linguistic strings in the minds of language users. This broad issue can be broken down into two more specific guiding questions: First, is it possible to gain cognitively realistic insights into speakers’ linguistic knowledge from quantitative generalisations over corpus data? Second, and maybe more importantly, what exactly should be understood by entrenchment? In the pres-ent work, these two questions, which are crucial for assessing the status and scope of usage-based theo-ries, will be subject to detailed critical evaluation and empirical investigation using a multi-method research design.

HAndbooK of JApAnese psycHo-linguisticsStudies of Japanese language and linguistics have advanced quite significantly in the last half century due to progress in the study of the cognitive pro-cesses and brain mechanisms underlying language use, language acquisition, and language disorders. Thanks to technological developments, experimen-tal techniques employed in psycholinguistic studies have also advanced and a large body of new knowl-edge has accumulated. The current volume brings these state-of-art findings together and discusses our brain functions, in particular, the process of Japanese language acquisition and the mechanism of Japanese language perception and production.

AnnuAl review of soutH AsiAn lAnguAges And linguistics2012

South Asia is home to a large number of languages and dialects. Although linguists working on this region have made significant contributions to our understanding of language, society, and language in society on a global scale, there is as yet no recognized international forum for the exchange of ideas amongst linguists working on South Asia. The Annual Review of South Asian Languages and Linguistics is designed to be just that forum. It brings together empirical and theoretical research and serves as a testing ground for the articulation of new ideas and approaches which may be grounded in a study of South Asian languages but which have universal applicability.

The Yearbook of Phraseology is a fully internation-al, peer-reviewed publication dedicated to research in phraseology, a linguistic subfield concerned with the study of word combinations of varying extent and type, and different degrees of fixedness. Word combinations are ubiquitous in language and constitute a significant resource for communication. Their study is of interest to many other subdisci-plines of linguistics and even to other disciplines, throwing light on the make-up and modes of creation of complex building blocks of language, as well as on the way in which language functions. The Yearbook of Phraseology is sponsored by the European Society of Phraseology (Europhras).

pronouns And clitics in eArly lAnguAgeTraditional grammars have stated that clitics are subject or object pronouns whose distribu-tional features make them different from personal pronouns. This book focuses on the acquisition of personal and demonstrative pronouns as well as clitics with respect to determinative phrases in a variety of languages of the Romance family and several indigenous languages, such as Quechua. A particularly original aspect of the present volume is that it not only addresses syntactic issues, but also semantic and pragmatic questions that have been widely neglected in the literature. It also reports on acquisition data of languages, such as Quechua, which have not attracted the attention of research-ers until very recently.

pHAsesDeveloping the Framework

With an introd. by Noam Chomsky

This book contains a series of essays that explore the foundations, developments, and goals of Phase Theory. The antecedents of this framework go back to the notion of “cycle”, which plays a key role in phenomena such as compositionality, locality, and economy conditions. Much recent work within minimalism has been devoted to investigating the nature of phases and their relevance for other areas of linguistic inquiry. This book aims to address these questions and sharpen our understanding about Phase Theory and the nature of the Faculty of Language.

strengtHening tHe pro HypotHesisGenerative theory has long sought to capture the syntax of Control, questioning whether the comple-ment clause contains a syntactically projected thematic subject, whether such an argument under-goes displacement and, if so, where and why, and what role semantics may play. This book continues in this tradition, critically examining paradigms erroneously assumed to favor PRO analyses over Movement and implicit argument accounts. It of-fers novel data amenable to analysis only within a PRO approach – but one radically different from its predecessors in form and interpretation.

The mental representation of language cannot be directly accessed but can only be inferred from its effects second hand. This book is a collection of papers from current research into language knowl-edge by systematic observational and experimental means. The articles show the wide range of meth-ods adopted and the ingenuity required to tease out firm answers about language structure and process-ing. This work shows how controlled methods can advance our understanding of language, one of the defining features of humanity.

discourse And grAmmArFrom Sentence Types to Lexical Categories

Bringing together papers from various subfields of theoretical linguistics, this volume gives a representative glimpse of current research of form and function in grammar. Its overarching topic is the relation between the major clause types and their canonical or idiosyncratic roles in discourse. Though none of the papers addresses the topic in its full breadth, they all make their specific contribu-tions to it, scrutinizing the pertinent aspects of the grammatical interfaces and elaborating detailed case studies.

order And cHAngeDiachronic Pathways and the Syntax-Morphology Interface

Across time and languages, we can observe that linguistic change is not random, but rather proceeds along recurrent patterns and pathways. Focusing on the history of the Germanic languages, this book explores how directions and tendencies in morphosyntactic change (word order change, the rise and fall of null subjects, and the development of paradigmatic syncretism) can be attributed to the interplay between language acquisition strategies and universal ‘hard wired’ principles of grammar.

direct interfAce And one-cHAnnel trAnslAtionFollowing up on the Guide to Morphosyntax-Phonology Interface Theories (2011), written from a theory-neutral point of view, this book lays out the author’s approach to the representational side of the interface. The main insight is that diacritics such as hash-marks or prosodic constituents do not qualify in a modular environment. The alternative is that only syllabic space, i.e. CV units, can be carriers of morpho-syntactic information. This idea is worked out in detailed case studies of a number of languages in the framework of CVCV (or strict CV), which makes the book the 2nd volume of A Lateral Theory of Phonology (2004).

new JournAl!  Gualtiero Calboli, Pierluigi Cuzzolin (Eds.)

JournAl of lAtin linguisticsLatin is a corpus language with an impressively rich textual and intellectual tradition. The language was passed down through manuscripts and inscrip-tions and was the lingua franca in international communication and scientific writing, scholarship and science until well into the 18th century. All Romance languages have their origin in dialects of Latin, and the influence of Latin is also conspicu-ous in languages like English and German. As a result of this long tradition and of the influence on the languages spoken today, the study of Latin is of high relevance for modern linguistic research. The Journal of Latin Linguistics (formerly known as Papers on Grammar) is the only journal devoted entirely to Latin in both synchronic and dia-chronic perspective. All linguistic phases of Latin – Archaic, Classical, Vulgar, Medieval, Renais-sance, Modern – are treated. The Journal of Latin Linguistics fills a conspicuous gap in the scientific literature and is arguably the most important jour-nal for Latin linguistics. The editors and members of the advisory board are renown scholars in the field.  Rigid peer-reviewing is applied.
