    Editorial Exhaust

A return to the usual format of 16 pagesthis month is indicative of the shortness ofthe publishing month due to the Easterlong weekend. This issue had to go to the

printer (Dollco Digital) the last Wednesdayin March.

It appears that the insurance issues will be

worked out in time for Spring Fling andour MCO Race School, both in April. I'mthe organizer and registrar for the schoolworking closely with the Armstrongs (Bobis the chief instructor) and the executiveall of which are far more experienced atthis than I. I'll also be a student. There wil

be a report about the school in the nexLink.

So, I don't really have any feelings abouthe state of health care, what with beeninggenerally healthy and well covered from

Nortel (BTW, I'm back working with themagain after a 4 month layoff). But when I

booked my medical exam required toapply for the novice CASC license, I wastold they couldn't take me for 12 weeks, ieMay 30th. Good Grief, heaven forbid Imight have actually needed medicaattention for an illness. "I'm sorry MrMuise, but the doctor can't see you aboutyour broken arm until early 2003. Perhapsyou could just not move it around verymuch?"

Four days after taking the school, I'm offto Toronto to take the Level-2 BMWdriving school, perhaps I can write up aquick report of that event as well. The last

exercise at the BMW school is anautocross using the new BMW M3 coupeHurray!! At the Level-1 school it had asimilar exercise and to my surprise Iactually had the best time (that was usingthe 330Ci - I was saddled with the onlyautomatic transmission there despite my

protests). Hmmm, perhaps I should havewritten an article about that as wellPerhaps May will see another 20 pageLink again! Hurray!

To: All Territory Presidents and Canadian Association of Rally SportDate: March 22, 2002Subject: Master Insurance Plan

On March 6, 2002, we communicated to you that we had not receiveassurance from K&K that they would be able to offer us continuedinsurance coverage after March 31, 2002. For some months we have beenexploring alternatives.

We are pleased to advise that we have today received a commitment fromone of the major North American motorsport insurance brokers that thewill provide coverage effective April 1, 2002. In other words, wanticipate a seamless transition of coverage. We previously advised youto expect a substantial increase in premiums. However, we are pleased tinform you that the increase will be in the fifty percent (50%) rangewhich is considerably less than expected.

Also, there will be changes in procedure. Under our agreement with thnew insurance provider, ASN Canada FIA will assume overalresponsibility for insurance and risk management. The details of thiarrangement are not yet finalized. However, from this point forward, alcommunications on insurance matters must be addressed directly to thioffice.

We are preparing rate sheets and are already well advanced in thpreparation of an Insurance and Risk Management Manual, which will bdistributed to all Clubs. Obviously, time is pressing, and we need to gethis information out as soon as possible.

Life in the FastLane with Len Clue

    by Jean MacGillivray

Those of us who love BMW's got a spe-cial treat on March 16, when Len Clueinvited us over to see his race car. Abouta dozen of us met with Len and hiscrew, J.R. Fortin, Chris Capowski andJeremy Hamilton, at Len's Beacon Hillhome, where the race car is stored afterits last competition. That was the Dayto-na Grand-Am Cup race, where Len andpartner John Lockhart finished 24thoverall and 7th in class (ST1). Nicedriving, especially considering they hadqualified 44th overall.

The "us" I'm referring to are membersof the Ottawa chapter of the BMWClub. Chris Pawlowicz, the president, isalways on the lookout for interestingtech sessions, and he arranged this

    show-and-tell session around Len's busyschedule.

Len took us through a history of the car, which is an E36 328is, built in Atlanta,Georgia. After going over what wasstock (most of the car, including thebrakes) and what he had modified (afew things, like group "N" cams, adjust-able shocks, it's lowered a bit and he putcoil-overs up front), he popped open thehood so we could see for ourselves. Heeven started the car up so we could en-joy the sound of a 260-hp engine com-ing to life (it has a custom-built free-

    flow exhaust).

Everyone was interested in the car andits performance, and Len and his crewwere kept busy answering lots of ques-tions from a very interested audience. We wanted to know how it felt to be onthe track, dealing with other competitors- nothing like living the experience vi-cariously!

Afterwards, I chatted with J.R. andChris about being part of a race team, which includes driving long distances toa track and supporting the drivers duringa race. It was really interesting to get a

sense of the "lifestyle" around the track:the motorhomes, the maintenance of aspecial race car, the smell of the high-octane fuel, the intensity of competition.

I had to leave early due to another com-mitment, but I left behind a room full ofguys totally immersed in the very spe-cial world of racing. We really appreci-ated having Len, J.R., Chris and Jeremygive us a glimpse into their world.

Chris Pawlowicz is writing a technicalarticle that he has agreed to share withThe Link, so a full report will be com-ing your way soon. Many thanks toChris for his great tech-session ideas. We look forward to reading his take onLen's very special BMW.

he will be attending a meeting the fol-lowing evening at CASC where therewill be representatives of ASN presentwho may have some news.

As of March 31st there will be no liabili-ty protection for the Club's officers, andanyone uncomfortable with the situationwill have to make a personal decisionregarding staying on.

A decision will have to be made regard-ing our risks in conducting "social" ac-tivities, such as meetings, but there willbe NO competitive events.

Before opening the topic for discussion,Ron Woltman first introduced WarrenHeywood, who will assume the Club's

new position of Club Merchandise Co-or-dinator. The discussion then dealt withthe following: Regarding the concerns of other clubs,

Ron noted that some, including the "Z"club, may be seeking a refund of affilia-tion dues. He added that Laurence Pol-ley is looking at voluntary receivershipprotection for CASC.

There was some discussion regarding thepossibility liability of the Club's officers, and procedures to follow. Craig Hammasked about notarised resignations, andSteve Greiner noted that there could beno corporation without officers.

Ron Woltman noted that, on a personalpoint, he would not resign, but the Exec-utive MUST be careful about what wedo.

He then asked Rob Microys to checkwith the organisers of Speedorama re-garding whether or not their insurancewould cover our display.

Ron then closed this topic by noting thatVARAC is leaving K&K, and goingwith a U.S. insurer.

In a discussion later in the meeting regard-ing memberships and affiliation fees, thefollowing points related to liability insur-ance were raised: Several members present noted that per-

haps it would be best in future to requireClub membership for all participants inClub events in order to minimise liabili-ty risks. It was noted that several otherorganisations, including the SCCA havethis requirement.

The effect on Solo II was raised, as 75%of participants enter only one or twoevents. The Executive discussed thepossibility of requiring that all entrantsbe members of MCO, but no decisionwas made at this time.

Ron Woltman advised the meeting thathe would like this topic to be on theagenda for the next Executive meeting.

    MCO Display:

Jean MacGillivray outlined the proposedcontent and format of the display, andnoted that she needed material fromSteve Greiner.

Ron Woltman advised that it would bebest to keep permanent material generic, and provided Jean an advance of$140.00 from general revenues for dis-play expenses.

There was a general discussion on thevarious possibilities for content, layoutetc. of the display in order to make itadaptable for use at different events.

    Rally:

Craig Hamm briefed members on the fol-lowing: Regarding the presentation by Doug

Mepham on March 27th, a notice hasbeen sent out to various clubs, and JimHoltom has graciously loaned his pro-jector for the video presentation. Thereis also the possibility of a press mentionin the Ottawa Sun.

Craig requested the input of members onthe draft letter to prospective Rallysponsors.

There will be a Rally Marshal's Schoolon the Easter weekend.

He closed by giving a brief update on theMangy Moose Rally, and by noting thatJim Morrow and Jean MacGillivray willbe attending the RSO general meetingon the coming weekend.

Club Incorporation:Steve Greiner reported that the up-dates tothe Club's registration as a corporation areprogressing.Racing - Open Wheel:Rick Miskiman reported that things arequiet except for preparations for the annu-al tech inspection.Karting:Paul Swinwood reported the following: About 20 people attended the Karting

meeting the previous evening and re-viewed the MCO Karting Series Supple-mentary Regulations. It looks as if therewill be about 50 entrants for the upcom-ing season.

Despite renewing his track liability in-surance in January, Paul advised thatK&K have cancelled the policy. Theyhave yet to return the unused portion ofhis premium.

The Karting Supplementary Regulationsand Series application forms will beposted on the Club's website.

There could be up to 100 new membersfrom the Karting division.

We will need to create a Club Karting Li-cence form, preferably plasticized. The $200.00 OKRA affiliation fee will

cover up to 50 Karting members as astart-up.

We will need to create a Karting flyer, and a shifter kart will be available forthe Club's Speedorama display.

Affiliation Fees:Ron Woltman opened a discussion on thetopic of CASC/CARS affiliation fees, asfollows:- Ron reported that it was noted in the

CASC-OR Annual Report that MCO has

decided to share dues with both CARSand CASC-OR, resulting in a loss ofrevenue for CASC.

It was suggested that we should look atthe wording of the agreement on the al-location of fees to ensure our proceduresare correct.

    MiscellaneousRumblings IIby John Powell

    1. Say It Ain't So!

On St. David's Day last, I came upon a sadindicator of the degenerated state of pres-ent society. I followed a Volvo 240 driv-

ing on a wet, greasy road, negotiating acurve at just under 80 kph, behind a 10ton construction truck mounting a massivecement suction pump and pipes, and thedriver had a cell-phone glued to his ear!Oh, what is the world coming to? Haveeven Volvo drivers sunk to the depths ofthe average motorist? I fear, dear friends, that Western Civilization is truly at anend!

    2. 407 ... the King's Highway Number,... or the dollar amount of the toll?

Well, as promised, this is my rant about

toll roads. And yes, they're still called theKing's Highway. Don't ask me why, asour last king, George VI, died half a cen-tury ago. I have held my views about tollsfor a long time, but the trigger for thispiece was when circumstances forced meto use the 407 when I picked up my RX7in the GTA last summer. For two trips to-talling about 25 miles, the bill was $10.95.This consisted of $4.81 in tolls, and $6.14in other charges! These were $4.00($2.00 per trip) for not having a trans-ponder (to make it easier for them to col-lect their tolls), a $2.00 "account" fee (payto use the road, then pay them to send youa bill!), and $0.14 GST. Oh yes, if youdon't want to pay for not having a trans-ponder, you can rent one from them - foranother fee. And you thought credit cardinterest rates were a rip-off!! Back to therant.

It used to be in Ontario that we only hadto pay tolls for special highway projects, such as construction of the Burlington andSt. Catharines Skyways. When the proj-ects were paid for, the tolls were then re-moved. All this has changed, however, since we elected as the Provincial Govern-ment a bunch of American style rightwing ideologues masquerading as tradi-

tional Canadian style Progressive Conser-vatives. (I did say this was a rant, afterall.) Now we have the 407 "Express TollRoute" (Expensive Toll Rip-off?), andprobably more coming, if the presentbunch remain as the government. As sac-rifices to their god of so-called "free enter-prise", we will be expected to pay twicefor our roads! Once in the form of fueland highway taxes, the other in the formof tolls to "free enterprise" monopolies, for the use of the public roads "sold" tothem by their friends in the Government.

I have no objection to a private companybuying up land, building their own road, and then levying tolls to defray their capi-tal costs and expenses, and to make aprofit if they can. Especially if they are indirect competition with other privateroads. After all, this is how true free en-terprise operates. I am less comfortablewith, but under the right circumstanceswould accept, the government chargingtemporary tolls for special projects, such

as the major bridges mentioned above. But, there is something in me, perhapsCeltic bloody-mindedness, that rebelsagainst continually paying twice for an es-sential public service. And inter-cityroads are an essential public service, giventhe high cost of air travel, our neglectedpassenger rail system, and the inconven-ience and tedium of inter-city bus travel. My blood really boils, however, when Ipay for a road through my taxes, have topay tolls to use it, and then have part ofmy payment go towards the profits of aprivate company. A road built by the tax-payer should not be used as a vehicle for

    private profit!

    3. The CCAB Numbers Are In .... Col-umn Readership Doubled!

No, not the Canadian Circulations AuditBureau, but the Canadian Compendium ofthe Aberrant and Banal. Counting our es-teemed Editor, the four e-mails I have re-ceived, and 5 comments in person, Mis-cellaneous Rumblings II now has 10 con-firmed readers. O.K., the editor has toread it to proof the copy (but it's always a

pleasure to do so - ed), but that still leaves9. The original Miscellaneous Rumblings

column in RPM, the news letter of theSports Car Club-Toronto, in the early '60sonly had 5 confirmed readers. These wereJohn Punshon, the editor, so we have todrop him, his father, Bert Punshon, AllanBunting (Uncle Bunt), the President ofSCC, and two friends, Cliff Taylor andDave Jameson, for a net total of 4. So injust 40 years, I have more than doubledmy confirmed readership! What's next, you may ask? Well hopefully, a lucrativecontract with a leading national newspa-per chain. One who's editorial policy isbalanced and moderate - perhaps the Na-tional Post or one of the Sun (newspa-pers?)?

    4. Back in the Saddle - Episode VI -"The Devil Farts in My Face Again,Baldrick" (Black Adder II, BBC, EpisodeV, "Beer" (1989))

Let's see now, where to resume our saga.Well, it was August 2nd. 2001, the carwas at it's new home, and it was time tolook at what needed changing to suit me.For example, there was the fact that I wasa fair bit taller than the previous owner,

amongst other things, so let's start with theseptic tank. Huh, you say? But cars don'thave septic tanks. No, but farm housesdo, and when they need pumping, theyneed it NOW. Well, uncovering it's a bitof work, but it's a simple job, right? It isif you know where it's located, but not-when it's not where I was told it was whenwe bought the place! But the City knowswhere it is because they have the plans, right? They don't if it's older than 1972,

which it is. Do you know how long ittakes to probe an area 30 x 60 feet to adepth of 30 inches in order to locate (pos-sibly) a pipe about 6 inches wide or a tankabout 5 feet in diameter? I do now! Theupshot was that after I found it, uncoveredit, removed and replaced two 150lb. con-crete tank covers, and re-covered it, alongwith other chores and rain interruptions, almost two weeks went by that shouldhave been spent working on my race car.The first August test day at Mosport wasnow out of the question, but Shannonvillehad a pay-per-lap evening the followingMonday, which was now my objective.

With the three extra days, I gave the car aquick once over, and discovered it's rideheight was too low to get my floor jackunderneath at the preferred jacking points, the front cross-member and the differen-tial. I had to use an old scissors jack un-der the rocker panels to get just enoughheight to use the floor jack. That figuredout, I adjusted the pedal heights, of whichmore later, and managed to get the seat anextra inch to the rear. That wasn't enough, but would do for the moment. Loadingthe car on the trailer by myself proved tobe a challenge. The front of the trailer

had to be raised for the exhaust to clearthe rear trailer cross-member. You had tobe lined up dead straight before you clim-bed the ramps, as you couldn't see oncethe nose of the car was in the air. Thedoors wouldn't open once the car was onthe trailer, so you had to climb out of thewindow. Once you were out, the carwanted to roll back because of the angle, and putting it in gear only slowed it downa little. You had to have a block handy, get out REALLY quickly, and shove itunder the nearest wheel! Once the trailerwas levelled, you then rolled the car intoit's proper position for the tie-downs. Imanaged all that, and then it was off toShannonville for an evening's lapping, with my old Buco helmet because my newBieffe hadn't arrived yet from Italy.

Unloading at the track was a bit easier asmy wife was along to help, although thisdidn't stop me from nearly driving off theside of the trailer ramps because I put thesteering wheel on in the wrong position. From there, things got gradually worse. Iforgot what the tire pressure was supposedto be, so I had to guess - wrong. The oil

filler was on so tight I had to use pliers toget it off. I got more gas outside the carthan in because of a quirky filler neck. And getting the front air dam mountedwas more difficult than untying the Gordi-an knot - I could see the holes, but nothinglined up. After liberal use of the GreatAustralian Adjective, and after much run-ning around and too much time, I headedout for my first few laps.

I found out at the starting line that youdidn't hand in your tickets and run yourlaps, you had to come in to the pits eachlap and hand in a ticket for your next lap.

Not great for rhythm, but it was seat time.Out I went on to the Long Circuit, andthere encountered some more unpleasantsurprises: Going down the straight after turn 1, the

rear of the hood lifted with a bang, and Ithought it was going to come off - until Iremembered that it should have beentaped down.

Heading into turn 2 (3?) I realised thatthe track disappeared somewhere off in-

to the grass, and I couldn't see where Iwas going! The RX7 is a lot lower thanmy pick-up, and although I was familiarwith the track, it didn't help. I had trou-

ble with this all evening, trying to guesswhere the corners went, how hard to

brake, and where to pick up the line. Then, halfway through my second lap,

the brakes locked on! After they hadcooled down, with my spirits down inthe dumper, I drove slowly back to the

    paddock to investigate

I couldn't see anything obvious wrongwith the brakes, so I went to the manual

for the troubleshooting chart. There, rightnear the top of the list, was "incorrect ped-al free-play". A light went on - therewasn't enough free-play in the brake ped-al! When I adjusted the pedal height backhome in the garage, I had not allowedenough clearance. So I wriggled andsquirmed head first under the dash and re-adjusted the pedal. This fixed the prob-lem, but it took over half an hour, andnow we were running out of time when....... I noticed oil on the air dam. The leakappeared to be at the oil cooler fittings soI tightened them up, topped up the oil, didn't see any more leaks, and went out

again.I got four more laps in but by now I wasthoroughly out of focus - I was trying toohard and driving poorly. I was still havingtrouble trying to see where the track went, and only got the braking points and linesworked out reasonably well for a coupleof corners, even at the end of the backstraight, where there are braking markers. It was a totally unsatisfactory perform-ance, but a learning experience. However, the worst, and potentially the most dan

gerous problem, occurred on the wayhome. I got a massive cramp in my rightleg on the 401 near Kingston, and only

just managed to get stopped on the en-trance ramp to a service centre, whichluckily was just up the road. My wife hadto drive the rig into the parking lot, and itwas at least half an hour before I coulddrive again. The cause was the terribleseat in the pick-up, and I knew they'd haveto be fixed.

Back home in the garage the next day, andtaking stock, the job list developed into:fix the air dam; re-do the seat mounts toget more leg-room, install a fire extin-guisher, do something about the load-ing/unloading rigamarole, and some otherminor things. First, though, was do some-thing about that terrible seat in the pick-up! The problem was, not only was therenot enough leg room, but the seat itselfwas poorly designed, and not easily modi-fied. Pondering the problem, I was look-ing out of the garage window, when "...soft, what light through yonder (dirty)

window shines?...". 'Twas fair Helios, softly glinting on the faded paint of theold Volvo 142 out by the barn! Well, af-ter much measuring, cutting, drilling, cursing, etc., and blood (there's always

blood in such undertakings, isn't there -'tis the way of things - cuts, abrasions, andso on), two old Volvo seats are now in-stalled in the pick-up. They're much bet-ter, but I could still use about an inchmore leg room.

A similar amount of pondering, measur-ing, cutting, cursing, blood, etc., went onto the jobs on the car, and gradually they

got done. The air dam now installs easily,I got another inch or so more leg roomand some height by re-doing the seatmounts, installed a fire extinguisher, andfound a solution to the loading/unloading

problem. I now have a pair of sturdywooden ramp extenders, which also comein handy as small service ramps for thecar. The last test day in August was onlytwo days away when ... the effing oil cool-er still leaks! It wasn't the fittings afterall, so out she came and down we went tothe local rad shop to check it out. Well, the threads for the drain plug werecracked, and they couldn't do anything

about it but recommend a trip to an alumi-num oil cooler specialist in Kingston, orliberal amounts of epoxy weld. Oh well, there were still two test days in Septem-

    ber.

I did make the first of the September testdays. It wasn't pretty! First, though, I didmanage to fix the leak in the oil coolerwith epoxy, and found a good used spareat RX7 Heaven, which I picked up on myway to Mosport. But, four days before Ileft, Essex Distributing still didn't have

my helmet because all of effing Italy waon summer effing holiday! Joe Chan saidthat he would be at Mosport on the weekend, and would bring it if it arrived. Inthe meantime, I phoned Mosport, and theytold me my old Buco would be O.K. if thBieffe hadn't arrived. When I got to thtrack, things started off well. The helmehad arrived that morning, and the traileramp extenders worked like a dream. did have quite a bit of trouble with thetrack - it looked so much as I rememberedit, but drove so much differently. I'll ginto that next month, so let's end this withthe Devil's last fart in my face. Duringmy second session, a lower rear trailingarm came undone when I was exiting thhairpin. I lost the bolt, nut, spacers anall, and no-one could help me with aspare. So, my day was done! Howeverlest we end this rather long tale of woe onsuch a dismal note, the next test day did

begin to show a ray of hope, as we shalsee in the next episode.

    5. They want me ... they really want me

Funny how your interests alter your perceptions. I headed out to the mailbox few days ago to collect the mail and pickup the empty garbage cans, and while was juggling various items I noticed thathe sender's corner of one of the enveloperead "ALMS". "Now what" I though"does the ALMS want with me?" Visionof sugar plums, or more exactly a sponsored ride, danced in my head. Hey, I cadream, can't I? Back in the house, andupon examining the envelope more closely, I found that it read not "ALMS", bu"ALS". It just was a solicitation from th

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Society fomoney. Worthy enough, I suppose, buI'm not rich, and I've already got my favourite charities picked out. Besides, theydisappointed me!

    6. Parting Shot

I've come up with an idea for a new bestseller, and of course the subsequent lucrative movie. It will be about people in crisis as they face the challenges of navigating the web amidst wrecks, depth chargescrashes, and sub-surface enemies. It wil

    be called "DOS Boot!".

the position to contact the Executive.Ron finally announced that there would bethe auction of a telephone in the shape ofa red Ferrari Testarossa after the end ofthe meeting. It was rumoured that thisphone once belonged to Luca Badoer forthe purpose of receiving a call from JeanTodt to assume a seat on the Ferrari F1team. It was therefore brand new and init's original box. Bob Armstrong notedthat he had been a presenter at the Canadi-an Motorsports Hall of Fame in Toronto, and announced that they now have a newhome in the old Hockey Hall of Famebuilding at the C.N.E. grounds in Toronto.

Winter Driving School/Capital CitySpeedway: Bob Armstrong thanked the volunteers

who made the schools a success. Theseincluded instructors, workers, track de-signers, Herb Henning - maintenance, organiser and registrar Richard Muise, and Paul Swinwood.

Ron Woltman noted that we have theCCS parking lot up to the end of April, notwithstanding the ongoing sale pro-

ceedings for the track. Ron then added his special thanks to

Bennett Leckie, Paul Swinwood, BobArmstrong, Herb Henning and RichardMuise for an outstanding job with theWinter Driving Schools.

Racing School: Currently we have 17 students who have

registered and paid a deposit or the full

amount, and a further 54 people whohave expressed an interest. Ron Woltman advised the meeting that

we are looking for instructors fromMCO, who would be our first choice, that the Chief Instructor from the FAQhas asked to be included, and that in-structors from other clubs have ex-pressed an interest.

Ron then opened the topic for commentsand questions from the floor, and some ofthe items discussed were: The only licence requirements for the

school would be a valid provincial driv-er's licence.

Richard Muise advised that informationon the school would be on the Club'sweb site, and registrants would be pro-vided with a full information package, including driver and vehicle require-ments.

Bob Armstrong stated that we would on-ly be doing a physical check of cars fortrack-readiness, and if the student willbe applying for a Race licence, the vehi-cle must have a manual transmission.During the discussion it was also notedthat open cars must have a roll bar com-plying with the current CASC Solo Iregulations. Bob also noted that all carsmust have 2 front seats with DOT seatbelts as a minimum.

During a discussion on helmets, mem-bers were informed that the minimumrequirement was SA95 (or better), andsomeone then pointed out that eventhese would be declared obsolete forracing in a few years, and that SA2000helmets would be a better choice.

Bob Armstrong closed the discussion bygiving an outline of the course structure, and noting that there would be writtenand track performance pass/fail exams.

Treasurer:Bob Benson reported that our presentbank balance is $30,407.00, but with de-ductions for the residual fund and trackdeposits for the racing School and theCanaska Cup, the effective working bal-ance is $17,085.00. He added that theWinter Driving Schools and Slush 'nSlides have shown a net profit of $8,600,and Membership income since Nov. 1st,2001 is $2,200.00.

Rally:Craig Hamm reported the following: The Rally Solo planned for Capital City

has been postponed until next winter. There were 21 members and guests at the

last MCORG meeting, where they en-joyed a video and presentation on thePerce Neige Rally given by SteveRioux.

Jean MacGillivray has asked that those

at the meeting with written material forthe Club display give it to Craig. The next Club rally is the Mangy Moose

at the end of April. 10% of all entrants in the 5 event Yoko-

hama/Subaru winter rally series havebeen MCO members. Craig then gave abrief outline of members' experiences inthis series, noting that Steve Greiner andNick Berry are currently in 5th place inthe Novice class.

Craig has a Targa Newfoundland bro-chure for the viewing of those interest-ed. He also noted that Doug Mepham, who looked after Public Relations for

and competed in the Targa Tasmania, will make a presentation on this eventincluding a video. Information on date, time and place is in the Link and on theweb site.

Racing:The only item reported was Chris Krep-ski's reminder that the annual technical in-spection would be on March 30th. Detailscan be found on the web site.Karting: Paul Swinwood reported that he and Kel-

ly Michaud had attended the recent OK-RA meeting, which dealt with straight-ening out some of the rules.

He then gave an outline regarding clubkarting licences and the race series, andwill give the information to Rob Mi-croys for posting on the Club web site.

There is a strong possibility that a spon-sor will be found for Karting in Ontario.

The next MCO Karting meeting will beon either Monday March 18th or some-time in April. The inforation will beposted on the web site.

There is a pressing need for workers forClub Kart races.

In response to a question there was a dis-cussion regarding under 16 race licencesin the 4 stroke Honda classes. Paulbriefly explaned that a medical wouldfirst be required. After that there wouldbe 3 races within the MCO club series, then the posibilty of moving up to theRegional level, including Quebec.

In a final note, Paul advised that thetrack inspections had not yet been done.

    April 2002

The meeting paused at 8:40 p.m. for abreak, and returned at 9:05 p.m., continu-ing with the following:

Canaska Cup/Regional Racing:There was a general discussion on theseitems, including the following points: Ron Woltman pointed out that Cindy

Armstrong, Paul Swinwood, Craig Hamand himself are continually attendingmeetings in Toronto to put forwardmembers' positions at the Regional lev-el.

He then explained the reason for the in-crease in entry fees, including the factthat all the clubs lost money on raceslast year, and that the new fees are pub-lished in this month's Link. He went onto mention that we wanted to at leastbreak even on the race, and that we con-trol the gate at Shannonville, while clubsusing Mosport do not.

    - Ron next noted that insurance rates forall club events would be going up, andPaul Swinwood added that the estimatehe had was 35%. The general discus-

sion then revolved around various topicssuch as; entry fee increases are too high, there are too many race meetings perseason, possible MCO cooperation withVARAC at Shannonville or Mosport, theeffect of costs on the number of entrieslast year vs. this year, and the posibiltyof the Club adjusting the effectiveamount of entry fees by issuing morecrew passes.

One member gave some reasons from hisexperience in support of the argumentthat the present class structure (bracketracing) has tended to require more carmodifications at an increased cost in or-

der to stay competitive. In response to a question, Ron Woltmanadvised that in order to reduce costs, there will be no Test Day prior to theCanaska Cup this year.

Web Site:Rob Microys explained that due to prob-lems with the attempted upgrade of the

web site hardware, another attempt will bemade the weekend of Mar. 8th / 10th .

Speedorama:Rob next gave a brief report on the Club'sSpeedorama display. We have 3 cars, aperformance rally car, Porsche 944, andRob's race-prepared VW Jetta. The dis-play we had last year may not be availa-ble, but we will still need workers for set-up and to man the booth.Solo I and II:Jeff Graves reported for both departmentsin the absence of Greg Kierstead. We had a good Winter Solo II season de-

spite the weather, and Jeff thanked HerbHenning and Bennett Leckie for thetrack.

The Solo II schedule still has some con-flicts at JetForm Park with a ball tourna-ment and a car show, although the latterare interested in having an event runwhile they're there.

Jeff briefed the meeting on the status ofthe Solo I and II Regulations, and the re-

quirement for a CASC Basic licence forSolo I. More detailed information isavailable online, and Jeff has a copy ofthe Quebec schedule for those interest-ed.

There was a question from the floor ask-ing why Solo does not have a pre-tech-nical inspection system similar to racing. This was not resolved.

The Link: Richard Muise first announced that he

has some coupons for rebates on Good-year tires, if anyone is interested.

He next explained that he is making

some improvements in the Link includ-ing a table of contents for reference pur-poses, and a Results Page (under devel-opment) showing member's results inClub and other events.

    - Richard then informed the members ofhis coming retirement as Link editor,August will be his last issue, and his rea-sons for stepping down. There is an arti-

cle in the March issue of The Link ex-plaining the editor's duties, and he askedthat a replacement be appointed soonerrather than later, as this would allowtime for training and transition.

Other Business: Ron Woltman informed the meeting that

we had received a request for drivers faran upcoming TV pilot. When asked fordetails by a more senior member pres-ent, Ron informed him that the requestwas for drivers who were both youngAND personable, and left those presentto draw their own conclusions. Informa-tion on this request is on the web site.

Regarding the Club history, Ron has spo-ken with Mike Lowe recently, and prog-ress is being made towards a publicationdate later this year.

He next reminded members of the me-morial for Ted Powell on March 16th(see details in the March Link), and stat-ed that the Executive will consider somesuitable way to recognise Ted's contribu-tion to the sport and MCO.

Ron closed by giving a brief rundown onenquiries by FILA Ferrari, a clothingmanufacturer, for a marketing arrange-ment with the Club to sell their products.

The meeting was adjourned at approxi-mately 9:45 p.m. on a motion by NickBerry, seconded by Dave Butler.

Note: The "Luca Badoer" Ferrari Testaros-sa telephone was auctioned off after theclose of business. There ensued a heatedbidding war between Dave Butler andNick Berry that was worthy of any farm

auction, with Mr. Berry the fortunate win-ner. The Club's coffers have now been in-creased, to the great pleasure of Bob Ben-son, our Treasurer, by the princely sum of$12.00.

    MCO Rally GroupNews, April 2002

    by Craig Hamm

The onslaught of tough winter rallies isover, we are licking our wounds, craftingour lies and tall stories, and getting somesleep! Though we are in a lull in the rally

competition schedules, there is activity!Jumping in...

Of 24 scored Novice teams in the Yokoha-ma/Subaru Winter Rally Series no lessthan 8 teams are listed as MCO members. Our two most successful teams throughoutthe series were Steve Greiner and NickBerry in the legendary black beast (FordF150 4x4) for 5th place and Kirby Dunstanand Gary Oman (Subaru Impreza) in 4thplace. Kirby and Gary beat Steve and Nickby only 2 points (Kirby and Gary were 3rdin Frostbite, 3rd at Defi des Glaces). Ryan

Huber and his mother came tenth in Nov-ice in the famous Ontario Winter Rally, beating all other MCO teams (again!!!).Who said it wasn't a family sport? As forme, I had my first experience navigating incompetition at the Frostbite rally for JamesCorrigan. This was, as expected, hum-bling but also a lot of fun. I'm quite thank-ful for Gravol! On both Frostbite andOWR competitors had very little snow onthese early March winter rallies, and nowin late March we have tons of it!! Aghhh!

Jean McGillivray has been busy workingon the multi-panel display in preparationfor the Doug Mepham Targa Tasmaniapresentation. Many thanks to her for thetime as I know she has been very busy re-cently. Related, Jim Holtom graciouslyloaned us a video projector for DougMepham's slides. Truth be told, these arevery expensive to rent, and Jim really

pulled us out of a costly bind. Manythanks Jim and Control Microsystems!

We have two new rallymasters and eachare first-timers. Corey Groves, the RallyGroup Competition Coordinator is work-ing on the Mangy Moose which is sched-uled to run April 27, out of Navan. RyanHuber only a member since January has

agreed to make the 2002 version of the To-tally Silly Drive, slated for late May orearly June. Both rallies will require nospecial equipment other than clipboard, pens, and a stopwatch. Any more than thatand you're ahead of the game. Our ralliesdo not have complicated instructions; wedo NOT try to get you lost. In fact it seemsgetting lost is rare on MCO rallies.

Rally-dude Warren Haywood has agreedto join the executive as Merchandise Coor-dinator and is the point person (not neces-sarily the do-er) for all design, purchasing,

and selling of MCO club merchandise. Bitby bi t, Warr ren w il l be bui lding up t heMCO stores of t-shirts, buttons, hats, andall that cool stuff. Many thanks to Warrenfor moving from the rally regalia role tothe larger task of managing the currentvoid of club merchandise.

Greg Brady's Rideau Lakes Racing SubaruImpreza (co-driver Steve Frankovitch) willbe on show at Speedorama, as will CraigSeko's Porsche 944 which is undergoingconversion to rally specifications for TargaNewfoundland. Thanks guys for the use

    of the cool autos!

years Targa Tasmania (http://www.tarorg.au/), a historic tarmac rally coveri2000 kilometers over 5 days on the islaof Tasmania. This event was to only brally group meeting, but I decided it wachance to really get the word out to masses about our sport. To that end Ivited all the local car clubs and notified press. The President

It is a little known fact that long before his days in theYokohama Formula Ford series, our gregarious Presi-dent once made attempts to make his name famous onthe European circuit. Unfortunately, unlike otherwould be Grand Prix greats of the time, Ron pickedPoland as his point of departure and he is seen here

lined up for the qualifying session at his debut in1965. Decimated by his lavish style and subsequenthospitality expenses, the under budgeted team wasforced to use a tire off the team trailer when Ron blewa tire in the morning practice.
