Lockers improve on-site changing facilitiesfor production and warehouse employees

LOCKERS IN ACTION

A decision was made to improve on-sitechanging facilities by providing newpersonal lockers and a CAPEX was raised.

Lockers were to be installed in three keyareas: the main production area, asecondary production area and thewarehouse room. The design and layout ofthe locker areas had to provide a systemfor the issue of clean workwear and thecollection of dirty laundry at the end of theworking day.

Based on their modular standard mild steellocker range, Link 51 Lockers installed1800mm high single door lockers, on topof 372mm high Sixto lockers in two widths:300mm and 450mm wide. The standard300mm wide lockers feature a shelf andhanging rail. The 450mm wide ‘clean anddirty’ lockers are designed with a centraldivider, allowing hanging garments to bekept separate. Doors are louvred top andbottom for added ventilation.

Locker users have access to both the upperand bottom lockers while the laundry storehas access to the bottom locker only.This allows for the controlled issue ofclean workwear.

In the main locker room four garmentcollection lockers were also provided sothat employee’s can ‘drop’ their dirtylaundry via the slot at the top of the lockerdoor. The dirty laundry drops in largeplastic bags within the lockers, which areremoved and sent to be laundered.

With all the items clearly labelled witheither the employee’s name or lockernumber, the laundered garments arereturned to site and are placed in eachemployees bottom locker by the storeman.

Queensmead School:

Laminate locker installation proves idealfor schoolLocated on Queens Walk, South Ruislip in Hillingdon, Middlesex,

Queensmead School is a co-educational secondary school with

academy status, for pupils aged 11-18.

The school made a decision to replace the lockers and enquiries were made to find suitablealternatives, together with costings. The school’s ideal specification for new lockers includedlaminate doors - these doors still have the same steel carcass as metal lockers but they benefitfrom a solid grade laminate material which is incredibly tough and will look as good as newafter ten years, with little or no maintenance. Another key requirement for the new lockerswas to have the ability to box-in thelockers, so with the addition of slopingtops, nothing could be placed on top, orunderneath the lockers.

Link 51 installed 1200 five door highlockers throughout the school, all with ahasp for securing with a padlock andfeaturing blue laminate doors. The majorityof the lockers are placed in alcoves, inbanks of 50, throughout the schoolcorridors, replacing the previous metallockers like-for-like. The installation ensuredthat there were no gaps between lockers orthe retaining alcove walls, as was previouslythe case with old lockers.

Where classrooms were big enough toaccommodate them, banks of 30 lockerswere installed, all with sloping tops.

Soho Gyms:

Gym goers look forward to secure androbust changing facilities

CASE STUDIES

When the Covent Garden branch of Soho Gyms underwent a

£250,000 refurbishment, it turned to Link 51 to provide stylish,

durable lockers that could withstand constant use in its busy central

London venue.

Soho Gyms selected two different configurations for its new changing rooms with two-doorlockers, which are spacious enough to accommodate hangers for clients’ clothing, and smallerthree-door lockers. Integral benches were also installed to provide a more comfortablechanging environment for gym customers.

Soho Gyms chose a smart metallic silver for the locker colour as it perfectly complementedtheir corporate colour palette of grey, blue and cream.

Ninewells Hospital is one of the largest teaching hospitals in

Europe, based on the western edge of Dundee, Scotland.

When fire broke out in the central female nurses’ changing rooms over 1,500 nurses' personallockers and 600 shared uniform lockers were destroyed.

Link 51 Lockers was tasked to provide a temporary storage solution for the hospital’s 12,000nurses’ uniforms, while a total refurbishment of the gutted nurses’ changing rooms gotunderway. Link 51 Lockers supplied hundreds of lockers to accommodate alternativeuniform arrangements.

Working with the hospital estates staff, Link 51 Lockers produced CAD designs of the newchanging rooms and progressed the £1 million re-fit without delay.

The contract included supplying andinstalling;

l 500 single-door time share lockers, operated using a token acquired via a wall-mounted dispenser located at the entry to the facility.

l 2,000 personal possession lockers, secured by padlocks.

To prevent the risk of material accumulating, sloping tops are incorporated on locker runs.

Police Custody Suite:

Based in Leeds City Centre, the busy police custody suite, located

next to the Leeds Magistrates Court, realised the benefits of

Link 51’s Vision Panel Lockers and installed a bank of 12 4-door

lockers in the facility.

The lockers, which sit behind the custody suite’s booking in desk, are used for storing thepersonal possessions of detainees whilst they are in custody. Based on standard mild steellockers, this range of allows visibility of items without compromising on security.The toughened polycarbonate view panels allow, at a glance:

n Security inspection, to ensure contents do not pose a security threat or are otherwise inappropriate.

n Visibility of the items inside, acting as real deterrent to casual pilfering.

n Quick identification of the items stored.

The lockers, which in this case feature standard deadlock locking mechanisms, are finishedin BioCote® anti-bacterial finish as standard on all internal and external surfaces.

St. Mark’s School:

Lockers tidy upgrowing School

With an expanding establishment, the school’s corridors and classrooms had becomeincreasingly cluttered with children’s personal items, creating an untidy environment of coats,bags, scarfs and lunch boxes. Not only did the constant upkeep of these areas have an impacton teaching staff time, the health & safety implications created by trip hazards, together withthe potential fire safety issues from restricted exits were of concern.

Link 51 Lockers provided advice on which type of lockers would best suit the school and themost practical arrangement and location of the lockers to ensure the space available could beused to its full potential.

Located along the corridors outside each classroom the lockers provided colourful and neatstorage for pupil belongings whilst removing trip hazards from fire exits.

To differentiate reception and year 1 from the other classes within the school, different lockerdoor colours were used, with the older classes having a colour pallet of yellow, green,light blue, red, dark blue and the younger classes having lockers finished in pastel shades.

BS 4680 - the standard forclothes lockers

n To obtain conformity to BS 4680 1996 , the product must satisfy a number of key criteria covering dimensions, material, construction and finish, locking, fittings and ventilation.

n On larger sized doors, a welded vertical channel section stiffens the door for protection against impact damage.

n Complying with BS 4680, a close fit between the door and the frame of less than 2mm protects against leverage in attempted forced entry.

This simple and economical cam lock provides user access with asmall, easily replaced key. The lock is supplied with two keys and amaster key is available.

Hasp & Staple Padlock Fitting

Transfers responsibility for locking to the user. The user is requiredto secure the locker with a padlock (not supplied). This systemprovides flexibility at the loss of some control over allocationof lockers.

Coin/Token Return Lock

Ideal when lockers have ‘shared’ users. The key isreleased when coin (£/€) or token is inserted. Key iscaptive again when the door is reopened and thecoin/token is returned to the user.
