Elevator Pitch
Exchanging information is a hassle when networking and meeting people for the first time. Business cards are an outdated solution.
We partnered with LinkedIn to use their existing professional network in the context of a live event.
The LinkNow app enables business people to easily make and manage connections.

Key Lessons
User Tasks1. You just met a new person, John Watson, and want to connect
through the app. What do you do?2. You met Benedict Cumberbatch at an event recently. How do
you reconnect with him?3. You went to an IXDA show this past year and want to find your
connections from there. Where do you go first?4. How would you change privacy settings?5. You want to e-mail Benedict, who you met at an event, but you
can’t remember which event it was. What would you do?
User Feedback Summary
USER INSIGHTS “What does Nearby really mean?”
Did not see ‘Happening Now’ section
“Icons are confusing” User selected icons expecting a different result
User unsure of how Reminders work - did not know they existed.
“How does it get my information? Is it safe to show my information on this app?”
“Did I change something? Device does not give me any feedback.”
USER INSIGHTS CONTINUED
This is only valuable if it’s faster and easier than writing down a number or name directly in the phone…
Need for Speed & Ease
I want to choose exactly who can find me, like 2nd and 3rd connections only. I also want to accept all requests.
I ♥ control
It would be cool to have an advanced Search so I can find people who work for XYZ company and will be at XYZ event...
Advanced Searching, Please
Some people would NOT like this. At Sales Conferences, for example, prospective customers don’t want to be bombarded by salesmen...
This isn’t for everyone
I imagine people will want a lot of control. I wouldn’t want anyone near me to just find me.
Privacy is a big deal
PERCEIVED VALUES & DRAWBACKS
Business cards are old-fashioned and a waste of trees.
This is a cool way to meet people in your industry, stay connected, and recall events.
It makes events and conferences more engaging.
Privacy is concerning. There is a risk of someone you don’t want having your information....
This is dependent upon other people also having the app.
It seems like extra work if I can’t add these people to my phone’s address book and/or LinkedIn seamlessly.
INSIGHTS & NEXT STEPSPRODUCT UNDERSTANDING & NAVIGATION
NEXT STEPS
● Assumption: this is a feature extension of LinkedIn
● Overall navigation is intuitive; burger menu recognized
● 3 dots & star icons unclear
● ’Nearby’ not immediately recognized as by proximity
● ‘Met’ is assumed to be people users exchanged info. with
● Change terminology of ‘Nearby’
● Allow login without LinkedIn account
● Change the name of the app
● Add an onboarding experience
Design Changes● Renamed the app “LinkNow”● Added onboarding text to login
screen● Hyperlink is a different color
Feature Change● A LinkNow account is separate
from a LinkedIn account; users don’t need LinkedIn account to use the app
Before After
Design Change● A user with only a LinkNow
account will not show LinkedIn information
Feature Change● Since LinkedIn is no longer
required, a user profile without LinkedIn only contains basic contact information
● Added Menu Bar content
Before After
Design Changes● “Nearby” to “Near Me”● Menu Icon content changed● Added Notifications as
additional Action Icon
Feature Change● “Met” only includes new
connections, not everyone that was within 20’ for more than 10 seconds that day
Before After
INSIGHTS & NEXT STEPSPROFILE PAGES
NEXT STEPS
● How do I email or message someone from their profile?
● Icon confusion: Why a camera if there’s a profile photo already? What are notes for?
● Status update looks like a tagline / bio
● Not enough feedback when adding connection
● Make emails hyperlinks for quick emailing
● Change camera icon
● Remove status update
● Add more feedback when taking actions
Design Changes● Added indicator showing
“Invited to Connect” that fades after a few seconds
● Ability to directly email the person is clearer based on icon and color
Feature Changes● Removed “event status”● Eliminated ability to change
tagline and title for a specific event, will auto-populate from LinkedIn profile instead
Before After
Design Change● Added “scan business card”
icon● Removed “camera” icon
Feature Changes● Scanning a business card will
read the text on the card and store it in a note
● Cannot take a picture associated with a person
Before After
INSIGHTS & NEXT STEPSEVENTS
NEXT STEPS
● Current event in “Upcoming” tab seems confusing
● Did not notice Happening Now label
● Make design change for Happening Now ● Change layout of events & show an event advertisement below
Design Changes● Increased contrast of event
“Happening Now”● Spaced out individual events
so they look more visually separated
Feature Change● Included ads for other events
Before After
INSIGHTS & NEXT STEPSSETTINGS & NOTIFICATION
NEXT STEPS
● Want more options for Who Can Connect (e.g. 2nd/3rd connections)
● Would not look for contacts in “Attendees” menu
● Why is “Event Profile” greyed out? I want to pick and choose what I display from my profile...
● Differentiate between “Attendees” and “Contacts” ● Change options under “Can Connect WIth Me”
Design Changes● Removed some of the side
navigation’s content (exists elsewhere)
Feature Changes● Added new “Contacts”
category separate from Attendees
● Actions such as Settings and Help & Feedback are now in the Menu Icon
● Changed Notifications to be persistent in the App Bar
Before After
Design Changes● Slight visual modifications to
match the Material Design guidelines (mostly)
● Updated verbiage● Changed description of
Notifications
Feature Changes● Removed “Event Profile”● Will only show “Contact
Information” option if the user does not have a connected LinkedIn account
Before After
Design Changes● Changed menu style per
Material Design guidelines
Feature Changes● Altered privacy levels of
people who can connect with the user

#5ON THE RIGHT
PATH
We realized that we need a good onboarding process to orient our users.
Stars, cameras, and pages meant different things to different users and to us (even at low fidelity).
Most users had several ideas on other features we should add, but we had doubts about how many of them would actually use these “suggested” features.
Users find it unnerving when the app provides an option to show their information to “anyone” - wording is really important.
We found that most users did use business cards but found them to be a flawed solution. Feedback to our app was positive.
Thank you!
