Death Valley Photo Workshop January 7-11, 2011. Details and Information coming in the next newsletter. (Only five of 10 spaces still available.)

Burma (Myanmar) My good friend and great photographer, Scott Stulberg is leading a photographic workshop to Burma December 2-14, 2010. Scott teaches digital photography at UCLA Extension and the Julia Dean Photo Workshops. Because some people needed to cancel, there are three spaces available on the workshop. It is an incredible opportunity to learn a tremendous amount of photography from Scott, and get some amazing photos of the people and landscapes of Burma. Click here for the workshop information. See more of Scott's photography on his website at www.asa100.

Of course the predators like the migration because when its in their area, food is in plentiful supply and they eat well. During this time, life is good!

Driving along in Ngorongoro Crater we came upon big four big beautiful male lions lying in the road. It was obvious, by the size of their stomachs, they had just eaten well. About a half of a mile farther along the road we came across the carcass of the buffalo they had abandoned. It was now being devoured by hyenas and one of them had found himself a tasty treat – the heart of the buffalo. Hyenas are not good at sharing so he was running off to eat alone.

More Important Safari Information:

We have only three passengers per nine passenger vehicle giving you plenty of space for you and your photo equipment. You can photograph through windows on BOTH sides of the vehicle and also from the top, which pops up to create shade so you are protected from the hot, equatorial sun. Compared to other tours that pack the vans with up to eight people, this is a huge deal! Our African photo safaris are limited to eighteen people, including the leaders.

As we leave the lodges, the vehicles separate and spread out. This allows us to have up to six guides out looking for wildlife. They each have radios to share what they find. This way no one misses out on seeing the wildlife! With six great guides, you can hardly believe all of the wildlife they find. We have trained them to understand lighting, composition and what we are trying to achieve. Our guides are awesome!

Our safaris are designed for the ultimate photographic experience, however please don't be intimidated out enjoying one my photo safaris just because you are not a photographer or you don't use a "great camera." If you enjoy wildlife you will love these safaris and more than likely you'll come home with some great photos too!

Okay, so we found the cheetahs and we were all excited! This photography business can be interesting! “Everybody smile and look at the camera!" Sounds simple enough! Sometimes following directions and cooperating isn't all that it's cracked upto be!

It is always thrilling when we find leopards, especially when they are in a good location for photographs. This one was also very cooperative. She moved all about in this sausage tree giving us many different photo opportunities! …Stretching , yawning , jumping between branches etc.

I am not sure which would be more annoying, the bird on his face or all of the flies constantly buzzing around his face! It is no wonder that Cape Buffalo are often short tempered, cantankerous and down right mean! In appearance, except for their horns, they appear quite similar to cattle, but they have the reputation of being one of the most dangerous animals in Africa!

Buffalo story:

While growing up in Africa I knew a doctor and his friend who, one evening, were hunting guinea fowl in Tanzania. They were in a brushy area where they thought they might find some birds. As they quietly made their way around a large bush, they suddenly found themselves face to face with an angry bull Cape buffalo who stood in front of them, snorting and pawing the ground. In desperation they quickly tried to climb the nearest thorn tree. The doctor made it safely up into the branches but while his friend was still climbing, the buffalo came after him, hooked him with his horns and pinned him to the ground. Fortunately, the man was able to hold himself between the buffalo’s horns. The doctor, realizing his friend's dilemma, jumped down out of the tree, grabbed his 12 gauge shotgun off of the ground and ran over to the side of the buffalo and shot it at point blank range through the heart, killing the animal where it stood. Fortunately, when it fell it did not kill the man lying beneath him. They are very heavy animals with bulls weighing approximately 2000 pounds! That was a real friend!

Africa is well known for spectacular sunrises and sunsets. Each day we begin our morning game drive before sunrise. On our afternoon game drives, we return to the lodge just after sunset. This gives us the best opportunities to photograph this incredible beauty.
