President’s Message

Fellow members: I want to offer my most sincere wishes of good health to our members, our staff, and their families. The enormity of this situation seems to get more incomprehensible hour to hour. With that being

said, I'd like to offer a few words to show you how we're operating as a Club and to allow you to see what I am seeing as President of the Board during this pandemic. We have and will continue to offer our Members a takeout service for meals and the bulk items so necessary for many of us during this time. Chef John and his crew, with the help of Glenn and Anthony have been superstars for us. They have created a list of items that you can come get from the Club, without leaving your car, as we wait out this storm. The voluntary donations that have been so generously contributed by Members to help our most affected employees has reached over $30,000 in one week!! This type of empathy is enough to restore my faith in humanity. South Hills Club Members are setting the bar for other clubs in Western Pennsylvania. I've had multiple conversations with other Board Presidents of private clubs in and around Pittsburgh and they are looking at us as the benchmark on how to deal with this crisis. Congratulations to our management team and my fellow Board Members for their unbelievable contributions! I've never been more proud to be a part of SHCC. We will continue to analyze the forensics of the governments stimulus package and what it means for our staff, our Club and our Members. With that being said, we will begin sending our own stimulus checks (with donated assets and the service charge on takeout items) to our employees by the end of the first week of April. Immediate needs demand an immediate response. We will be having weekly BOG meetings throughout this situation to make those decisions that require quick and thoughtful actions. Your Board and all of our committees are working together to make sure we can weather the storm that has been thrust upon us. Previous Boards and Finance Committees should be commended for allowing us to be in the financial position that we find ourselves. We are confident that we are going to get through this and come back to some sense of normalcy over the next few weeks and months. In the immortal words of Winston Churchill " If you’re going through hell, keep going" And that we most certainly will. I'm so very proud of this Club and its Members. Best Regards Chris.

Dear South Hills Country Club Members: First, on behalf of the SHCC staff, I send our heartfelt thanks to all Members who quickly and generously contributed to the Employee Assistance Fund. While there has not been much

encouraging news recently, the membership’s response to this request for help was truly uplifting and reflects a Club culture where people genuinely care about one and other. I would also like to recognize and thank the staff personnel who continue working diligently to perform essential work on the golf course and prepare the food we are offering through Carryout Meal Service. Their dedication is commendable during this challenging time in everyone’s lives. The Carryout Meal Service continues to evolve. We had nearly 100 separate orders through the first four days. Our initial offerings included prepared foods and sauces with long shelf lives, and a few deli meats and cheeses that can help in feeding your family for several days. The menu will be updated weekly based upon Member feedback. If there are menu items or paper products that you would like to have available, please let us know. The Board of Governors and Club staff will continue to meet frequently during the temporary closure. When a firm date for reopening is announced, we will confirm dates for a revised calendar of events. The social distancing practices that we began implementing in mid-March will be refined and enhanced through guidelines established by the CDC and the Pa Department of Health. We are currently researching best practices for facility sanitization, golf cart cleaning and safe food handling so we are prepared for full operation. We will continue to provide progress reports for our Members when new information is available. Please know that we appreciate your support and looking forward to seeing and serving Club Members Stay Healthy and Safe. Sincerely, Frank S. Hamschin General Manager

Grounds Department Update

Without a doubt it has been an interesting start to the spring. Due to current restrictions our grounds department has been operating with five staff members. With the reduction in staff our primary goal is to take care of the turfgrass on the property. We are keeping up the mowing of all playing surfaces and making chemical applications that coincide with our growing degree day models. Normal spring detail work such as bunker raking, flower bed preparation and mulching has been put to the side until such time as we have the staff to adequately complete the work. We will, however, be addressing stump holes from our winter tree work to ensure new grass is established during the appropriate growing period. Aspen is scheduled to return to the Club the week of March 30th to finish our bunker renovation. With good weather, we are hopeful this project can be wrapped up within two weeks. Remaining work on the project includes: • Instillation of bunker liner and sand

• Construction of a drainage ditch between holes 5 and 16

• Finishing new approaches on holes 5 and 16

• Rough tie-ins on all new mound features We have received confirmation from all suppliers that we will be able to receive all materials needed to complete this project (sand, sod, soil). Greens were successfully aerified on March 9th. They were cored using a ½” tine on two inch spacing and punched with a 5/8” solid tine on two inch spacing. Despite our soil temperatures remaining in the upper 40’s, I am very pleased with the recovery progress. Microbial activity in the soil starts to take off when soil temperatures are in the mid-60s. Plants rely on soil microorganisms to mineralize organic nutrients for growth and development and in turn recovery is slowed until we reach desired soil temperatures. With so much uncertainty surrounding when things will be back to “normal”, I can ensure you the golf course will be ready for when the membership returns. It is our responsibility to find a new 100 percent during these times and I can guarantee you will not be disappointed. Best Regards, Bryan Flaherty, Golf Course Superintendent

A Note from our PGA Pro

Dear SHCC Members, I hope this note finds everyone healthy and well during these unprecedented times. While I understand there are much more important issues facing our world right now, I thought I would update you with the most up to date information on our local golf situation. After Governor Tom Wolf’s announcement of the stay-at-home order for multiple counties, including Allegheny County, all local golf facilities were told to shut down all facets of our businesses except for take-out food and beverage service. The Pennsylvania Golf Association, the Tri State PGA, the Golf Course Superintendents Association and the West Penn Golf Association petitioned the state government to allow a small crew of golf course maintenance employees be allowed to continue necessary maintenance practices to keep the golf courses in acceptable condition. This appeal was granted, thankfully, so Bryan Flaherty and his staff are working daily at the Club to make sure our course is ready once we are able to resume normal business. These associations also petitioned to allow members or customers to walk the golf courses during this time. Unfortunately, this request was denied by our state government. While I personally don’t quite understand the difference between walking the course and walking in a park, that is what has been decided by our government. During this time while the Club will be closed, you will be receiving different notices from our golf staff, Brian Klocek, Jeff Minster and myself, about different promotions and information to get ready for the golf season once we as a community, and country, get through these difficult times. Please understand these notes are not meant to be disrespectful in any way to the situation which we are facing, but are meant for all of us to look forward to better times and what makes our Club such a special place to be when times are good. Our Club has been in existence for 100 years, through good times and some bad. We will get through this and be back to enjoying our time at SHCC very soon! I hope all of you and your families are well. Please stay safe and I hope to see you at the Club soon. Thank you, Tony Traci

Golf News

Injury Prevention Strategies While the courses are temporarily closed in Pennsylvania due to the Coronavirus, strength coordinators and golf professionals stress that incorporating injury prevention strategies are a crucial aspect of preseason conditioning. Thorough conditioning and proper swing mechanics are both essential in helping to prevent golf injuries. Many injuries occur early in the season before proper conditioning has taken place. Include the following strategies before, during and after your golf game: • Always take time to warm up and stretch before playing golf, as

cold muscles are more prone to injury. • Allow for an adequate cool-down period and perform gentle

stretches after playing golf. • Include aerobic fitness training to help prevent fatigue (and

breakdown of good technique) in the later stages of the game. • Adding regular strength training for the shoulders, chest, back, core

and forearms will help avoid a breakdown of good technique. • Improving flexibility in the muscles and joints (especially around

the shoulder and core) will reduce the stress on these areas while playing.

• Stay well hydrated by drinking water every 15 minutes even if you do not feel thirsty.
