Boot Process of Linux
The LINUX System:
When computer is turned on, it executes boot code that is stored in ROM.
That code figure out how to load and start the kernel.
Kernel probes the systems hardware and then spawn system init process.
Automatic and manual booting
Linux system can boot in automatic or manual mode.
In automatic mode, system performs complete boot procedure on its own.
In manual mode, system follow automatic mode up to certain point but then turn over control to an operator before initializing scripts are executed.
At this point system is in “single user mode”, most system processes are not running and other users cannot login.
In day to day operation, automatic booting is used.
Manual booting is done mostly for system maintenance activity or troubleshooting problem such as file-system corruption.
Steps in Boot Process Typical Linux boot process consists of following
phases:
1) Loading and initializing of the kernel
2) Device detection and configuration
3) Creation of kernel threads
4) Operator intervention (manual boot only)
5) Execution of system startup scripts
6) Multiuser operation
Insert CD in CD-ROM..
What is a Partition?Linux Installation
Partitioning is a means to divide a single hard drive into many logical drives.
A partition is a contiguous set of blocks on a drive that are treated as an independent disk.
A partition table is an index that relates sections of the hard drive to partitions.
