TRANSCRIPT
Lion John Vaughan from Telford is in serious training for a mammoth trek this autumn. He will be flying to Kathmandu and then walking for over three weeks.
It all started in September 2012, while vis-iting his son in the Lake District; they first talked over the idea of walking to Everest Base Camp. To get close to the mountain will be a dream come true. After mulling it over and checking with his doctor- he is 69 and diabetic- the decision was made and prepa-rations began. There were two key things he needed to do –get the right equipment and
improve his fitness.
They will be walking for 25 days staying in small guesthouses. Accommodation will be fairly basic with limited facilities - and they expect to eat a lot of lentils!
As well as seeing magnificent scenery they will visit monas-teries etc. en route –one has a yeti scalp on display (looks rather like a bad toupee apparently!)
For John this will be the trip of a lifetime and he also wants to raise funds for a good cause. His wife has a hearing impairment and through her work for the local deaf and hard of hearing forum he met hearing dog Nevis. He heard about the importance of the dogs to their keepers –this inspired him to choose Hearing Dogs for Deaf People as his charity. In true Lions style he is paying all costs himself so every penny in sponsorship will go the Hearing Dogs.
If anyone wants to support John and the Hearing Dogs you
can get a sponsor form from him [email protected], 01952587617 or donate online at

Alsager Lions Handover Dinner
Photos taken during the recent Hand Over Dinner at the Bulls Head, Smallwood with a big thank you to Ian,
Sharron and staff for a great evening.
Phil Westhead the ex-President with new President Ella Gruse after receiving
Alsager Lions chain of office. Ella is Alsager Lions 27th President and its' first
lady President. Ella has been with the club for a year and was previously with
the Crewe and Nantwich Lions Club and in her last year there, was also
President of that club.
Ella has not only taken on being President of the Alsager Club but for the
second year running is Zone Chair for six Lions Clubs in the Cheshire/
Shropshire area.
Photo shows Alsager Lions’ senior (In age) member, Lion Anton Selvadurai, giving Ella a bit of advice of how
to cope with the additional work.
The International President’s Theme
Lion Barry Palmer, an Australian, has announced that his theme for the year that he is the International
President is
‘Follow Your Dream’.
He has challenged his ‘Dream Team’, of which I am part, to have a dream to follow. Now when I was at
school my reports would often say ‘he could do so much better if only he wasn’t such a dreamer’. So it
would appear that I am eminently qualified. But, I am no longer the dreamer in the sense that Mr Daniels,
my old headmaster, meant. I have tried to explain my ‘dream’ in my personal friendship banner. Its strap
line is ‘Building For The Future’, and that is my dream for this forthcoming Lionistic year. I want us, as a
Team, to look to what we can do to ensure we have strong foundations, check what condition we are in and
what we can do to strengthen and to build for our Lions future. We must leave BS in a better position to live
long and fruitful than it is in today. I have also had a non-personal pin designed
and this has, I hope, taken the strap line of the banner beyond just this Lionistic
year for which I have the privilege of being your Chief Executive.
Officially our work this Lionistic year starts on 1 July, but in truth our work
started in 1983 when BS was formed and it is the same work for which we take
responsibility together as Lions wherever you are within our District.

Happy New Year!
The start of yet another Lionistic year when all is quiet on the Western Front but I know you will be roaring
soon! If you wish to send articles to The Lion Mag could you please send them to me. I can then confirm that
the editor has received them. It was mentioned that when articles are sent that no confirmation is sent. They
have so many emails that it is difficult to reply to them all, also there is the dreaded junk box that they can end
up in. Although there is no guarantee they will appear we have done very well in the past and we still want to
have at least one article from our district per edition.
Did you see the ' Tonight' programme on ITV last month featuring Lion Lifeskills? I know it was disappointing
about our coverage after all the fanfare when the only mention of us was in the credits, but you can still
mention that the scheme was shown in use in a classroom on the programme. Perhaps it is worth mentioning
if we contact schools now. The programme is still available on ITV Player.
Can I say thanks to John Jones for being the editor of the NL for the past 12 months and Good Luck to John
Whitehouse our new editor.

Pupils from Southall School with some of the footballs
News from Clubs & District Page 5
Ironbridge & Severn Gorge Lions help schools to net a football.
Children at two Telford schools had smiles on their faces this week when they received a visit from a local
Lions club whose members came bearing gifts.
In its latest ‘giveaway’ event, Ironbridge and Severn Gorge Lions distributed leather footballs to pupils at
Southall School and St George’s School. Earlier they had given away footballs at the annual sports day of
Club 2000, a sport and leisure club for people with disabilities. The football gifts were made possible by the
Lions’ continued association with “In Kind Direct”, an
organisation that redistributes surplus goods from
manufacturers and retailers to UK charities working at home
and abroad.
Ironbridge and Severn Gorge Lions President, John Toll, said: “We are delighted that the recipients of our latest giveaways are children. To see the smiles on their faces when they received the footballs is something that will stay with us for a long time. Projects like this are so worthwhile and they cer-tain “In Kind” mission statement of ‘matching surplus with need’. Elaine Bradburn

President’s handover.
The Club recently held its annual President’s handover of office and it was “Murder”
Our President Elect Ian and his wife Liz arranged a Members’ and Friends’ Dinner and a “Murder” evening
due to start by 6.45pm which ended the next day (12.10am).
Our retiring President Carol (Countess Bogov) eventually passed the
office ribbon to Lion Ian (Huges Le’Grandbutte).
The other murder suspects included Edith le Grandbutte, Nicole Le
Grandbutte, Otto von Pinkelwurst, Kirk Ramson 111, Monsieur Oily-Carte,
Pierre Paysanski, Cherrie Boot, Ingrid Pith, Seamus O’Hack, & Pia Fedora.
Eventually Oily-Carte was discovered to have “done the deed”. A good
time was had by all!

LET THE TRAIN TAKE THE STRAIN!
Zone 8 entertained Special Needs families at their Foxfield Railway Fun Day. Over
536 people travelled on 4 trains, with the following comment amongst those
received from the families:-
“Please could you pass on our thanks for a lovely day! We really enjoyed it and
Polly loved the train ride. You all work tirelessly to raise money and please let the
members of all the Lions know it is greatly appreciated!”
As we enter our 30th year as a District, I would like to say thank you to you all for
entrusting me with both our past and our future. What I hope we will achieve this
year is to get to know one another better. Get to know each other better within our
Clubs, Zones and the District as a whole – so that we can all work well together to-
wards the same goals. And what are those goals? Well, put in simple terms - after
all I am a simple bloke at heart – I would like them to be:
To try to reverse the drop in numbers in our District. Not to meet some imposed target of 1,250 or for the sake of chasing numbers. We need people to join us in our work to be sure we have enough Lions with enough energy to build on the legacy that our senior in service Lions have entrusted to us when they invited us to join their clubs and to join with them in their service. Clubs that are now ‘Our Clubs’ and service that is now ‘Our Commitment’. To promote the name of Lions in our communities by meaningful service through understanding the local
needs of our communities by taking a fresh look at them. Programmes and projects started in the past may
very well remain relevant, but communities are live things and they grow and develop, change and evolve, and
their needs change. So we must be ready to meet those changed needs. Societies change, their attitudes
change and we have to find ways to reconcile those changes with our desire to serve them; we have to find
ways to engage with today’s members of society at all levels.
At the same time, I would want our forthcoming year to be one of review – for us to look at how we work in our Clubs, how we work together in our Zones and your District Governor Team - the District Officers can help you achieve your goals in your service. Over the past few years the District Governor Team has worked hard at spreading the message that Cabinet
exists to manage the outside pressures of being part of an international organisation and at the same time
serving every lion in every club in every zone. In short I want us to create the environment in which Lions can
do what they joined Lions to do and what they do best – Serve Their Community.

Secretarial Woes If the secretary sends a letter .....it's too long
If he sends a postcard.......it's too short

If he calls them up..... he's a pest
If he offers a suggestion...... he's a know all
If he doesn't...... he's useless
If he asks for advice....... He's incompetent
If he doesn't...... he's swollen headed

KNUTSFORD LIONS STREET FAIR Crowds flocked to the Knutsford Lions annual Street Fair on Bank Holiday Monday 27th May. The centre section of King Street was closed to traffic and the Lions arranged for gazebos to be erected for a variety of charity and trade. Lions have been organising this event for over 20 years and there are many local charities and community organisations that treat it as one of their regular fund-raising events. Last year the Town Council adopted it as part of the Jubilee Celebrations and the red/white/blue theme proved very successful - this year the same theme was used to celebrate 60 years since the Coronation, which allowed the jubilee hats and bowties to be worn again!
The Club arranges a variety of entertainment along the street - this year balloon modelling and interactive magic for youngsters, a duet to serenade the drinkers/stallholders and a flautist. The Loose Change Buskers also performed and did a collection in aid of Cancer Research.
Knutsford Lions produce a Street Fair programme which includes information about the work of the Club and is a great PR aid. Programmes are marketed around Knutsford during the 2 weeks before the event and on the day, in exchange for donations - we have found this to give a better response than if there was a fixed charge.
This year we raised around £2,500 from the event - most-ly from the programmes - but in addition a number of local charities have also raised in the region of a further £5,000. Wilmslow Lions and Urmston Lions each took a stall again this year - so it was hard for anyone to get down the street without being accosted by a Lion (politely of course!).
Knutsford Lions recently started up a Facebook page which contains many pictures of the event and can be accessed by anyone via a link on the website www.knutsfordlions.org.uk (or Lions e-clubhouse).
