Lions Mission StatementTo develop an environment offellowship, mutual trust, and

understanding through which theLions of District 50 Hawaii

can advance the humanitarianpurposes of Lions Clubs International

and to develop leaders who willlead us toward the attainment

of our goals.

7

LionismThe International Association of Lions Clubs started as a

dream in the mind of a young Chicago insurance agent. The man was Melvin Jones; the dream was the consoli-dation of several independent clubs, already in existence, into one strong, influential unit for service to humanity. Thisdream was presented to the leaders of various independ-ent groups at a meeting in Chicago, Illinois, on June 7,1917. From that meeting came a call for the Association’sannual convention, which was held October 8-10, 1917 inDallas, Texas, with 23 clubs participating. Thus was con-ceived and founded the world’s largest, most active andmost representative service club organization. The Association did not become international in fact

until 1920 when the first Lions clubs were organized inCanada. The third, fourth and fifth Lions countries wereChina, Mexico and Cuba in 1926 and 1927. Eight yearslater Central America entered the fold, and in 1936 thefirst South American club was established in Colombia. The first Lions club in Europe was organized in Stockholm,Sweden on March 24, 1948. Although the largest byfar, the Lions are the youngest of the major service cluborganizations.Today our Association is in practically all countries of the

world. On every continent it is working through hundredsof thousands of Lions of all nationalities and creeds. The Lions believe in club meetings where good fellow-

ship and harmony prevail; in developing projects andactivities geared to the needs of their communities; inbroad participation in an international program of brother-hood and fellowship, based upon service wherever theneed exists; in service to humanity without thought torace, creed, nationality, religion or politics; in the ultimateleadership of Lionism, but not at the expense of or in con-flict with the programs of other organizations which, withdifferent methods, seek the same goal of unselfish serviceto mankind.

The International Association ofLions Clubs

OBJECTSTO CREATE and foster a spirit of understandingamong the peoples of the world.

TO PROMOTE the principles of good governmentand good citizenship.

TO TAKE an active interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community.

TO UNITE the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual understanding.

TO PROVIDE a forum for the open discussion ofall matters of public interest; provided, however, that partisan politics and sectarian religion shallnot be debated by club members.

TO ENCOURAGE service-minded people to servetheir community without personal financialreward, and to encourage efficiency and pro-mote high ethical standards in commerce, indus-try, professions, public works and privateendeavors.

66

LIONS

CODE OF ETHICSTO SHOW my faith in the worthiness of my vocation byindustrious application to the end that I may merit a rep-utation for quality of service.

TO SEEK success and to demand all fair remunerationor profit as my just due, but to accept no profit or suc-cess at the price of my own self-respect lost because ofunfair advantage taken or because of questionableacts on my part.

TO REMEMBER that in building up my business it is notnecessary to tear down another’s; to be loyal to myclients or customers and true to myself.

WHENEVER a doubt arises as to the right or ethics ofmy position or action towards my fellow men, toresolve such doubt against myself.

TO HOLD friendship as an end and not a means. Tohold that true friendship exists not on account of theservice performed by one to another, but that truefriendship demands nothing but accepts service in thespirit that which it is given.

ALWAYS bear in mind my obligations as a citizen to mynation, my state and my community, and to give themmy unswerving loyalty in word, act and deed. To givethem freely of my time, labor, and means.

TO AID my fellow men by giving my sympathy to thosein distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance tothe needy.

TO BE CAREFUL with my criticism and liberal with mypraise, to build up and not destroy.

67

Non-Sectarian InvocationOh Heavenly Father;

We Thank Thee for food, andremember the hungry.

We Thank Thee for health, andremember the sick.

We Thank Thee for friends, andremember the friendless.

We Thank Thee for freedom andremember the enslaved.

May these remembrances stir us toservice, that thy gifts to usmay be used for others.

Lion’s PrayerWhere Lions meet, be present, Lord.

Weld our hearts in one accord. To do Thy will, Lord, make us strong,to aid the weak

and right the wrong.
