This past year, the district received $26,750 in grant awards. These financial donations aided our district in carrying out LCI’s mission. In highlighting only a handful of the many accomplishments: piloting the first LCI Pre-K Lions Quest, introduction of Lions Quest, Anthem Foundation BC/BS Health Fair, development and operation of the Saratoga Lions Vision Center and the charter of the Marcy Telephone Lions Club.

The Marcy Telephone Lions Club is a club for potential Lions that find transport and time limitations as a barrier to becoming a Lion. Traditional meetings are held twice monthly meeting via a secured conference line with a passcode. Stay tune for the Charter Celebration details.

Effective July 1, I hand over the District Governor reins to Lion James Griffith. I believe that District 20-Y2 will continue its success with our upcoming leaders. We are fierce and determined in the delivery of Melvin Jones’ personal code, “You can’t get very far until you start doing something for somebody else”.

Cheers to a great year and continued victories!

Yours in Lionism, DG Paula

District & Club Newsglens Falls Lions Club

By Lion Karen Rager

On Monday, May 30, our Area Lions Flying Fingers participated in the Queensbury/Glens Falls Memorial Day

Parade.

Our May dinner meeting in recent years has been a picnic in Crandall park, which coincides with the cleaning and planting of our small flower garden near the Route 9 entrance, north of the pond.

Lions Karen and Scott Rager planted the garden, and then the club had a buffet style picnic which ended with us getting a little silly playing a fun game of Charades!

Our own Lion Jenn Howse (soon to be King Lion!), spearheaded a brand new event in Glens Falls, Saturday, May 21. The first annual Pet Fest was held in City Park, and was a grand success! The park was filled with dogs, dogs, and dogs, oh, and their humans! Many vendors were set up offering everything from pet portraits, to doggy treats. Glens Falls Lions set up their soda and water booth, and the Area Lions Flying Fingers performed again.

FIVE animals were adopted into homes. Forty five dogs were

Our guest speaker was our own Lion Dr. Allen Zieker, who told us about

his volunteering with SEE (Surgical Eye Expeditions). He’s been on missions to several Central American countries, including Panama, Honduras and Guatemala, to perform free cataract surgeries. Half of all blindness is caused by cataracts, and they’re more common in very sunny areas because of the increased UV exposure. Interestingly, even if a patient has cataracts in both eyes, they remove them from only one eye. Even with only one cataract removed, the patient will have very good vision, and this way they can do twice as many patients in the same amount of time.

We had enough board members present to vote to again sponsor a HOBY student for $200. We’ve been doing this for a number of years, and every year, we say we should have the student speak at our September orOctober meeting, but we never do. Maybe this time …

Lion Jerry reported that Donald Kaiser, a Troy optician, died in March at the age of 98. He had been a Troy Lion for many years, and we received a donation in his memory.

microchipped. Pet 1st aid and cpr training was offered, while many demonstrations were going on including dog training sessions, sheriff’s dept k9 demos, education on pet health, education on working dogs, and therepy and search and rescue.

I would say it was a grand success. WELL DONE Lion Jenn! We look forward to next year’s Pet Fest!

PDG Dave Harris noted that we were the host club for the annual meeting of the Sight Society of NENY/Lions Eye Bank, which was held on May 1 at the Desmond. Lion Carol Quantock, representing our club, gave the opening welcome address. She is a new member of the organization’s board of directors.

Our next drive is May 23 from 1-6pm at the East Greenbush Library.

Lion Jerry reported on another meeting at UAlbany in Rensselaer about a new campus club. It was decided that although the club would be open to students and faculty fromthe main campus, its emphasis would be the School of Public Health. The name will be UAlbany SPH Campus Lions Club. The goal now is to get the 20 charter members they need before they can submit the new-club paperwork.

Region O, Zone b NewsBy Lion Tom Snowdon

Zone Chair Tom Snowdon welcomed District Governor Paula Flisnik who made a joint visitation to the Duane

Lions Club and Town of Wright/ Schoharie Valley Lions Club at the Apple Barrel Café in Schoharie on March 21, 2016. He introduced Duane’s President Steve Perog and Wright/Schoharie Valley’s Vice-President Jessica Fagan who each reported on fundraisers and upcoming club projects. The Duane Lions recently purchased a device to screen young children for vision problems.

The Wright/Schoharie Valley Lions Club was selected as Grand Marshall to lead the American Legion’s Memorial Day Parade in Schoharie on May 26th. The club will be recognized for 40 years of service to the community. The club served as the area’s World War II and Korean War Commemorative Community and has a history of honoring veterans.

District Governor Flisnik explained the structure of the Lions organization Lions are volunteers who serve their communities. Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization with more than 1.4 million members in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. District 20-Y2 is one of 12 Districts within Multiple District 20 which comprises New York State and Bermuda.

District Governor Flisnik described various projects she has been involved with around the District. These included Lion Quest programs which teach young people skills necessary for everyday success; Lions See, Inc. (Screening Eyes Early) whose mission is to decrease childhood blindness through early detection and treatment of the most common vision disorders that cause Amblyopia, also known as lazy eye; and LCIF (Lions Clubs International Foundation) which enables compassionate humanitarian service around the world. The vast majority of LCIF’s funding comes through the generous donations from Lions clubs and individual members.

She reported on strategies to strengthen Lions clubs: the use of social media to connect members; the start of an on-line “telephone club” allowing visually impaired Lions to come together but also allowing for dual membership; an initiative to start a Lions club at SUNY Albany; and leadership conferences providing educational opportunities to members. The District Governor inducted three new members into the Duane Lions Club: Arthur and Camille Crandall, who were sponsored by Lion Steve Perog; and Diane Harris, sponsored by her husband, Lion Paul Harris.

During recent months, there have been a number of phone and email scams involving Lions. One member bought into an email scam and lost $2,700. Another received a check from Lions that looked legitimate, including correct routing numbers. Because she wasn't expecting money, she called the Lions Help Desk and discovered it was a scam. The perpetrators are also posing as members and contacting other members to make donations via phone. Unfortunately, if you lose money in a scam, there is no legal recourse and no way to recover the money. If you want to donate to LCIF, you can do so through your local club or by going to http://lcif.org/donate. If you suspect a scam, or if you're unsure, please contact [email protected] or call 1-630-468-6800. For tips on how to protect yourself from scams, visit the Lions Blog.
