Where we’ve been

LIPA launched the Clean Energy Initiative in 1999 The CEI was designed to be a market transformation program LIPA and NYSERDA worked together to create statewide

programs like Energy Star Labeled New Homes and Home Performance with Energy Star

LIPA invested $145,269,100 dollars in these residential programs and as a result reduced energy usage by 694,964MWhs, prevented 406,214.10 tons of CO2 from being produced and saved customers $135,517,980

LIPA worked with stakeholder groups to educate our green workforce. Currently - Long Island has 51 registered home raters, 391 certified Energy Star builders and 136 LIPA trained HVAC contractors

Where we are

Efficiency Long Island replaced the CEI in 2009. ELI is a $924 million dollar efficiency program that will reduce electric demand by 520 MW by 2018.

LIPA’s Residential Programs are projected to cost $224,500,000 by 2018 and will reduce demand by 168 MW.

These programs are designed to be extremely cost effective, achieve maximum electric savings and reduce peak load.

They differ from earlier programs that were developed with NYSERDA that were fuel neutral

Energy Star Labeled Homes

There are now 1323 ENERGY STAR labeled homes that have been incentivized on LI

LIPA has provided over $1.7 million incentives to LI builders, HERS Raters, and Municipalities.

The market penetration over this past decade for ENERGY STAR homes on LI has increased to approximately 40%.

LIPA continues to work with stakeholders, including builders, raters and municipalities to ensure that the highest standards can be maintained in this sector

Page 5: LIPA’S RESIDENTIAL ENERGY - asertti.org · The CEI was designed to be a market transformation program LIPA and NYSERDA worked together to create statewide programs like Energy Star

Cool Homes

LIPA has provided more than $3 million incentives to trained HVAC contractors and over $17 million in rebates to customers who install high efficiency central air conditioning equipment

LIPA has also provided $3.5 million to customers who install geothermal systems

Over 3,600 LIPA customers have had their HVAC systems properly tuned resulting in lower energy costs and reduced summer load

LIPA provides rebates to customers who purchase heating equipment with highly efficient furnace fans

Page 6: LIPA’S RESIDENTIAL ENERGY - asertti.org · The CEI was designed to be a market transformation program LIPA and NYSERDA worked together to create statewide programs like Energy Star

Home Performance with Energy Star

Over 1,700 homeowners have used Home Performance with ENERGY STAR to help make their homes more energy efficient.

A HPwES visit includes a Comprehensive Home Assessment followed by measures designed to make a home energy efficient.

Rebates offered for efficiency measures range from 25% (up to $3,000) to oil/gas heat customers with high central air conditioning use, and 75% (up to $3,000 )for electric heat homes.

LIPA continues to work with local contractors to expand its Home Performance contractor base.

Page 7: LIPA’S RESIDENTIAL ENERGY - asertti.org · The CEI was designed to be a market transformation program LIPA and NYSERDA worked together to create statewide programs like Energy Star

Residential Energy Affordability Program

LIPA has provided free audits to 44,625 eligible customers since 1999.

These customers also receive free compact fluorescent lights as well as air sealing where feasible

LIPA will replace old, inefficient refrigerators that not running properly

Customers homes are checked for air quality and combustion safety issues

LIPA works with local social service agencies as well as State and Federal agencies to ensure that they receive eligible benefits such as HEAP and additional weatherization measures

Page 8: LIPA’S RESIDENTIAL ENERGY - asertti.org · The CEI was designed to be a market transformation program LIPA and NYSERDA worked together to create statewide programs like Energy Star

Home Performance Direct

Home Performance Direct is a new program designed to increase the number of homes that become HPwES qualified. The services, offered free to electric heat or high CAC use customers, includes a Comprehensive Home Assessment and energy saving measures installed during the initial visit.

Over 2,480 customers have received HPD services that included air and duct sealing and free CFLs. Customers saved on average, $277 on their first year energy bills.

HPD contractors can provide additional energy efficient measures along with LIPA’s rebates available under Home Performance with Energy Star

Page 9: LIPA’S RESIDENTIAL ENERGY - asertti.org · The CEI was designed to be a market transformation program LIPA and NYSERDA worked together to create statewide programs like Energy Star

Where we are going

LIPA will continue to refine and evaluate our current program offerings

To meet aggressive capacity goals, targeting of cost effective electric savings is essential

LIPA will work with NYSERDA and National Grid to partner where possible to leverage programs to deliver more savings to customers

LIPA will work with NYSERDA to promote Green Jobs/Green NY which will offer low cost financing to Long Island residents for efficiency projects

LIPA will work with Federal officials to ensure that Long Islanders benefit from proposed programs like Homestar that will provide rebates up to $3,000 for efficiency measures. This is in addition to the $1,500 federal tax credit.

LIPA will continue to offer help to local builders and contractors to obtain the training they require to compete in the new green economy
