• I am a pulmonary/cc fellow and have been using this book as my primary text. It is wonderfully written with good clear explanations and sufficiently detailed without being cumbersome. It gives an excellent overview of all the topics. It is filled with illustrations, graphs and tables that improve the readability of the text. Many of the chapters are written by authors that are world reknowned in their fields. The only complaint I have is for a work of this magnitude it has several grammatical errors. Almost every other page! That is why 4 stars.

• One of the best pulmonary textbooks. I have read it almost from cover to cover. I used it to recertify for ABIM pulmonary exam. Very helpful. Many of the images/illustrations were similar to those that showed up on my examination

Page 9: LIS 140 Report

Book Description• The second edition is intended not only as an update,

incorporating developments in the scientific understanding of the disease, its diagnosis and management, and ideas in patient holding, but also examines in much greater depth the difficulties associated with the disease in the developing world where resources are few and problems of control much more widespread. While continuing to cover the epidemiology, pathology and clinical features, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of tuberculosis, the historical section and chapters on prevention have, in particular, been expanded, a new chapter on economics included, and the book now features a section of contributions from all over the developing world by local authors.

Page 10: LIS 140 Report

Book Review• "Comprehensive in scope, this book offers a plethora of

information, from a historical perspective and epidemiology through diagnosis and pathogenesis to treatment and control. Insights into cutting-edge developments in microbiological, diagnostic, and epidemiological research are included. That Davies' volume is dedicated toward the poorer, neglected areas of the world sets it apart from other works currently available. This text is nearly essential to family physicians with professional interest in areas of the developing world in which tuberculosis is endemic. Even for domestic practices with high-TB endemicity, this book would rank among the best; its orientation is universal, without the rich-industrialized-West bias encountered in many works available on this topic." -- Family Medicine and International Health, Winter 2000, No. 4

• This is a practical guide to the optimal clinical use of pulmonary function tests. Its focus is on the clinical utility of the most common tests: what the test measures; what the results mean; what kinds of abnormalities the test can detect; and what kinds of clinical questions the test can answer. Coverage includes tests for measuring airway obstruction, response to bronchodilators, diffusing capacity of lungs, gas exchange, lung resistance and compliance, distribution of ventilation, and maximal respiratory pressures. Also included are chapters on preoperative pulmonary function testing and tests of exercise capacity. The authors discuss test patterns in various diseases, offer guidelines on when to test and what to order, and explain how to interpret test results. The concluding chapter presents illustrative cases.

SOCIAL MEDICINE

Page 33: LIS 140 Report

• This history dates back (at least) to the early nineteenth century when the systematic study of the relationships between society, disease, and medicine began in earnest. This study—and the forms of medical practice derived from it—became known as “social medicine.”

Page 34: LIS 140 Report

• Over time the term “social medicine” took on varied meanings as it was adapted to differing societies and diverse social conditions. Nonetheless, certain common principles underlie the term:

• 1. Social and economic conditions profoundly impact health, disease, and the practice of medicine.

• 2. The health of the population is a matter of social concern.

• 3. Society should promote health through both individual and social means.

Page 36: LIS 140 Report

Book Description

• "The Social Medicine Reader" with eighteen pieces new to this edition. This volume examines the roles and training of health care professionals and their relationships with patients, ethics in health care and end-of-life experiences and decisions. It includes fictional and non-fiction narratives and poetry; definitions and case-based discussions of moral precepts in health care, such as truth-telling, informed consent, privacy, and autonomy; and readings that provide legal, ethical, and practical perspectives on many familiar but persistent ethical and social questions raised by illness and care.

Hospital Social Work: The Interface of Medicine

and Caring • Joan Beder (Author)

• Amazon 4.0 out of 5 stars

Page 40: LIS 140 Report

Book Description

• Hospital Social Work introduces the reader to the world of medicine and social work as seen through the eyes of actual social workers. An essential reference for both students and professionals.

• Over 100 social workers in dozens of hospitals were interviewed to provide the reader with first-hand experiences and discussions of practice principles, policy considerations, and theoretical treatments to provide each chapter with a unique blend of theory and practice.

• Joan Beder, a professor of social work and a practicing social worker, recently noted an apparent lack of empirical discussion of the actual role and day-to-day functioning of the medical social worker. Hospital Social Work is the result, a unique supplemental text for both studying and practicing medical social workers.
