If you wrote a memoir, what would the title be?

“You Matter!” Everyone has a place in life, everyone has a

meaning. I want each individual to know they matter. Through-

out my life, I’ve tried to make people feel powerful, inspired or

just plain liked.

~ Ilona Box, Certified Financial Planner, Vice President of

Investments, Church and Box Planning Group of Raymond James

“A Lotus Grows in the Mud.” This is an old Confucian saying

which means that something beautiful can grow no matter

what the circumstances. I was married at 19, had three kids by

23 and then divorced. After that came law school, remarriage to

my soul mate, another baby, a phenomenal law practice and a

life blessed beyond measure.

~ Rebecca Zung, Esq., Zung Clough PLLC

“Oh, That Was Easier Than I Thought.” Some-

times I get bogged down by all I need to do.

Several years ago I was stressed out about

some computer work that I thought would

take weeks to complete. I had a young

hairstylist who worked for me.

I told her that our summer project was

to complete this work. She sat down and

had it done in one afternoon. I just had

to laugh at myself and realized that I do

this in so many areas of my life—making

simple things complicated. You just need

to sit down and start.

~ LaDonna Roye, Founder/Owner,

LaDonna Roye Hairstylist

“I’ve Got a Tip For You...Life Lessons Learned From Our

Mom.” After losing our mother this year, we realized more

than ever how much knowledge and wisdom she imparted to

us throughout our lives, including when we told her we were

going to start our own business and become entrepreneurs.

Mom always started out by saying, “Girls, I’ve got a tip for you.”

~ LeAnn Toth and Diane Smith, Owners,

The Woodhouse Day Spa

“All Things are Blessings.” I try to approach challenging

life situations with the affirmation that I can likely find

some lesson or blessing in the adversity. This always

proves to be true when I seek the opportunity to be

teachable and cultivate a grateful heart.

~ M. Francesca Passeri, Esq., Salvatori, Wood,

Buckel, Carmichael and Lottes

“Can I Quit Shaving My Legs Yet?”

I’ve been hiding the hippie so long!

~ Emily James, Owner, Emily James Gallery

“I Did It My Way!” Having been brought up in a very

conservative family, I feel that I have embraced the

so-called American dream (freedom) my way!

~ Ana Howe, Owner, Here’s Howe Catering

“Trust Your Instincts.” Often times, brief observations can

be used to assess outcomes. Trust your initial judgment:

Most times, it will be correct. Jumping in the direction

of your subjective leanings can often lead you to

positive outcomes and happiness.

~ Amy Turner and Tammy Kipp, Co-owners,

Ooh La La Jewels Du Jour

“Life is Too Short to be Living Someone Else’s Dream.”

~ Natasha Smith, Naples Laser and Medspa

“Don’t Tell Me No!” I didn’t have a lot of encouragement

growing up and I heard a lot of “no,” or “you can’t do

that.” That just gave me more fire in my belly and

drive to accomplish what I set out to do.

~ Shelly Church, Certified Financial Planner, Senior Vice

President of Investments, Church and Box Planning

Group of Raymond James

“Turns Out My Mother Was Right All Along.” The

more I look back on my life with gratitude, and think

of some of the lessons I learned or not, it becomes

more evident each year that most of the time,

my mom was right!

~ Vicki Tracy, Director, The Arlington

Who inspires you?

My biggest inspiration comes from Mother Nature...

I am constantly moved by the vast beauty of the

outdoors, especially the skies, sand and surf of

the Gulf of Mexico.

~ Renee Conti, Co-owner,

Chesterdale’s Home & Garden

I feel everyone has a gift to share. If

I listen and just “be” with them,

there is always inspiration that

comes my way. I am especially

inspired by people who can

think “outside of the box” with-

out succumbing to the pressure

of what society may or may not

think is possible. They approach

challenges with passion; they know

there are solutions they simply

need to uncover, and they think

10 times bigger than most of us!

~ Jill Ciccarelli Rapps, Certified Financial

Planner, Vice President, Ciccarelli

Advisory Services, Inc.

Dr. Thomas Detre was a huge inspira-

tion to both of us. Born to a Hungarian-

Jewish family, he escaped the Holocaust

alone at age 15. He survived in Italy where

he went to medical school. He moved to the

U.S. and was hired at Yale and established a new

model of psychiatric care at Yale School of

Medicine. He then transferred to Pitts-

burgh where he ultimately became presi-

dent of University of Pittsburgh Medical

Center in 1984, overseeing the growth of

this world-class medical center.

~ Patrice Magrath and Michele McKenney,

Managing Members, McKenney Home Care

My patients and my staff members. My patients

have great courage and have made a commitment to

work on their self-care even when they have so many

other things going on that can make it challenging. My

staff inspires me by their commitment to our

charter and the well-being of our patients.

~ Caroline J. Cederquist, M.D., Founder/Owner,

Cederquist Medical Wellness Center

My father was from humble beginnings,

but had the courage to believe in himself

and in his ideas, and the perseverance

to achieve his goals. What made my

father’s success in business and

in life was his exuberance and

genuine compassion for every

person he encountered.

~ Donna J. Marshall, Family Law

Attorney, Marshall Law Office

I am inspired by women (and men)

who have had the courage to start

their own business and figure out

through diligence, perseverance and

hard work what it takes to make it

successful. Even more inspired if

they can do this while still maintain-

ing balance in their personal and

professional lives.

~ Lisa Bayard, Managing Partner,

Salons by JC

My skin care representative. She is

77 years old and she just loves what

she does. She can’t step away from this

industry because she loves all the new

technology that keeps coming out as well

as I do. I will probably be in this industry

until I’m 99½.

I am most inspired by individuals who persevere

through adversity. Anybody can make something if

you’re handed all of the right ingredients and have all

the right connections, but when you can make some-

thing out of what might be considered nothing, now

that inspires me. Jeff Bezos started Amazon out of his

garage. Michael Dell started Dell computers from his

dorm room with a $1,000 investment. They inspire me!

~ Rochelle Jackson, Financial Advisor, Merrill Lynch

Financial Solutions

It probably sounds corny, but there really is such

beauty in the world around us here, especially for an

artist who never tires of painting seascapes, orchids,

palms, etc. I am also surrounded by people who

support me in every way—such a blessing.

~ Emily James, Owner, Emily James Gallery

Veterans, for all their selfless sacrifices for our freedom.

I am on the board of Collier County Honor Flight, which

transports veterans to Washington, D.C. to see their

memorials, and the veterans on the flights are the most

impressive crew, yet also the most humble and grateful.

~ Rebecca M. Vaccariello, Esq., Salvatori, Wood, Buckel,

Carmichael and Lottes

My grandmother has always inspired me to be the

best person that I can be. She worked on a farm her

entire life so she knows all about hard work. She always

encouraged me to enjoy the little things, work hard, put

family first and never forget to stop and breathe.

~ Jacki Garland, Marketing Manager, Sundance Orchids

My dad is my inspiration. He motivates me just being

the way he is on a day-to-day basis. Sometimes I think

he must have more than 24 hours in a day! The many

and varied tasks that are handed to him are always

done flawlessly. He has consistently taught me to try

my hardest each and every day and to always do

what is right. His dad emphasized that our lives come

together if we simply abide by these simple building

blocks that we are taught early on.

~ Jacqueline Mitchell, General Manager, The Local

Eleanor Roosevelt was a strong woman who was

never afraid to take a stand. She was a humanitarian,

leader and giver. One of my favorite quotes is, “The

future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of

their dreams.” It hangs from the mirror of my car.

~ Trish Leonard, CEO, TLC Marketing & Creative Services, Inc.

My father’s passion for his

business, his employees and his

clients has been an inspiration

for me. He always shared stories

about his work at the dinner

table, and I was inspired to find

something that I loved to do.

He created strong relationships

with his clients and, after being

retired for 10 years, many of

them call to tell him that they

wish he was still running his

business. I feel that from his

example, I have the same work

ethic and have created lifelong

relationships with my clients.

What is the best business decision you’ve made?

The best business decisions I’ve ever made were the

deals that I said “no” to. Tons of opportunities have

come across my plate; not all are right for the vision

and success of the company. It can be quite flattering

when seemingly great opportunities come; you have

to know when to take them and when to pass on

them. Consider the opportunity and whether or not

it distracts you from your core vision and focus.

Sometimes the best move is no move.

~ Deanna Renda, Founder/CEO, Naples Soap Company

To believe in myself and in my dreams, and to move

in the direction of people who supported my vision.

~ Marie Benson, Owner, Permanent Makeup by Marie

To be involved in all day-to-day operations. It’s so impor-

tant to keep my finger on the pulse of what is going on

each day. It’s also important because I can meet

our customers and consignors when I am so

involved. Personal touch is everything.

~ Jennifer Johnson, Owner, True Fashionistas

Always remaining flexible in my

career choices. I have been blessed

to enjoy careers in both financial

services and law. I think it’s critical

to always keep your skills sharp.

Don’t become stagnant in what

you do. Determine how your skills

might also be useful in other

careers and don’t be afraid to

consider a new challenge.

~ Rochelle Jackson, Financial Advisor,

Merrill Lynch Financial Solutions

To work with a business coach

to create a legal practice that

empowers and fulfills me.

~ Jeanne L. Seewald, Southwest Florida

Offices Managing Partner, Hahn Loeser

and Parks LLP

Ten years ago, I set up a system to replicate myself

in the sales process of our company. Instead of

being the only sales person, I now have three

dynamic sales people on our team who can

produce three times the amount I could do by

myself. Implementing systems is the key to being

able to replicate one’s self.

~ Meriam Reed, Co-owner, Reed Design Build

When I was in the planning stage of opening my

upscale salon (L’Image), I encountered so much

adversity it was overwhelming. I worked and solved

all of the problems, stayed with the business plan

and it was a very successful business.

~ Sandi Darling, Master Colorist, Running with Scissors

Find a business partner who shares similar values.

Even if you don’t agree (or completely disagree) on

every aspect of your business or personal life, if you

have the same moral compass and commitment to

serving your clients, you will find a way to persist

through adversity.

~ Nadia Keric, Certified Financial Planner, Family

Wealth Planning Group of Raymond James

Expanding my practice to include sport

performance psychology services is the

best business decision I’ve made so

far. The depth and breadth of

knowledge I gained through

my specialized training

has influenced my overall

counseling style and given

me a unique approach

to helping my clients,

athletes and non-athletes

alike, reach their goals.

How do you achieve work-life balance?

Build a great team that has their own individual strengths to

allow me to spend time with my family, travel and have fun.

~ Michelle Spitzer, Founder/Owner, MaidPro of SW Florida

It is always a work in progress, but I try to live by

the quote, “Never get so busy making a living

that you forget to make a life.”

~ Jennifer DeVries, Esq., Woodward, Pires & Lombardo, P.A.

I’ve found to have work-life balance, I have to plan

for it. If it’s not on my calendar, it doesn’t happen!

Each week I schedule time for building business,

working out, and just having fun. Most importantly,

I start each day with a devotional and prayer.

~ Marsha McDonald, Financial Representative,

Advantage Retirement Group

I wake up early. Because I work in the hospitality

industry, I work irregular and sometimes late hours.

I find that the earlier that I wake up, the more time

I have for myself. I try to get up by 6 a.m. every

morning so that I have time to read, meditate,

work out and get errands done before I arrive

at the restaurant.

~ Jacqueline Mitchell, General Manager, The Local

That’s a tough one. When I am home with my kids, I

try to give them 100 percent of my attention. I put my

phone down and don’t check email or social media dur-

ing homework, dinnertime, bath time and when reading

bedtime stories. I want them to know I am present.

~ Kristy Malloy, Owner, Gigi’s Children’s Boutique

Exercise is the best stress relief there is, and it makes

me more efficient and productive at work. I also believe

in self-pampering. A good massage relaxes the body

and the mind, and can be so healing.

~ Beth T. Vogelsang, Henderson, Board Certified Marital

and Family Law Attorney, Franklin, Starnes & Holt, P.A.

The hardest question to answer—ever wonder why

they don’t pose this question to men? I’ve learned

over the years, I will never find the perfect balance

and I allow myself that. Taking care of myself is critical,

which for me is working out at 5 a.m. I start the day

right, feel like I can tackle almost anything and I’m

just a better mom, wife, friend and professional.

~ Ilona Box, Certified Financial Planner, Vice President

they roost at night while we drink coffee and share the

~ Connie Sims, Owner, Wildflower Boutique

It has taken years to achieve this and, at times, when

you own your own business, it can be impossible.

However, hiring the right people who share your vision,

values and passion has allowed us to trust that things

will run well, even when we are not physically present.

This has been a major contributing factor to allowing us

to do what we love from a business perspective

What’s your favorite tech gadget? How does it make your life easier?

Truthfully, I am super-behind my generation when it

comes to gadgets. I’m more of a pen-and-paper type

of a person. Working at a spa, I am hardly ever in front

of a computer, so I am terrible with technology. But for

my profession, I do use the best top-of-the-line digital

What’s the best advice you received from a mentor?

From another physician who created a nontraditional

practice who I think quoted Buddha. “It is better to

light a candle, than to curse the darkness.”

~ Caroline J. Cederquist, M.D., Founder/Owner,

Cederquist Medical Wellness Center

This is from my mother: “You need to ask for help.

You can’t do everything yourself.” Once I accepted

that, everything fell into place.

~ Kiranjeet Gill, M.D., Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon,

Aesthetic Surgery Center

I try to always remember this phrase: To speak ill

of others is a dishonest way of praising ourselves.

~ Jeanne L. Seewald, Southwest Florida Offices Managing

Partner, Hahn Loeser and Parks LLP

To never give up and keep pushing forward. There is

always light at the end of the tunnel. Every year, I set

short-term and long-term goals for both myself and

my business, then I reflect back on them to see

where I am and how far I have come.

~ Kristy Malloy, Owner, Gigi’s Children’s Boutique

Early in my career my boss told me, “Facts are your

friends,” and I’ll always remember that. I’ve found it

applies to work as well as your personal life. You have

to know where you are to be able to get to where you

want to be.

~ Marsha McDonald, Financial Representative,

Advantage Retirement Group

If you don’t use it, you will lose it. Keep active and

challenge yourself. It will keep you from getting old.

~ Barbara A. Fueredi, D.D.S., Co-owner, Clary &

Fueredi Prosthodontics & General Dentistry

Practice gratitude every day. Be thankful for what you

have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on

what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.

We experience this every day in our business. Financial

wealth alone does not bring happiness. Those who are

grateful for what they have and use it as a means to

live out their life’s purpose have the most joy.

~ Nadia Keric, Certified Financial Planner, Family Wealth

Planning Group of Raymond James

I was 19 years old when I went to work for my mentor,

Velma Bolin. She told me that to make it in the beauty

business it was important to always continue my educa-

tion. Never stop learning. She was right. There is always

something new to learn or something old that gets a

new twist. There have been times in my 38-year career

that I thought I was going to burn out, but learning

something new always brings me back.

Listen to your mother and go for your passion. If you are

following your passion, you will always be happy.

~ Vicki Tracy, Director, The Arlington

Early in my career, a dear mentor encouraged me to name

my dream and go for it. Not to let all the little obstacles,

including fear, get in the way. I remember this advice

often as I have forged ahead with my businesses.

~ Lisa Bayard, Managing Partner, Salons by JC

To succeed, you must have an extraordinary

amount of determination.

What do you plan to do when you retire?

Continue to be involved with my charities and spend

time with my new grandbaby. Travel as much as pos-

sible, and catch up on a lot of reading and movies that

I’ve missed over the years because I was too busy!

~ Shelly Church, Certified Financial Planner, Senior Vice

I would like to volunteer and help people out. I have

Bahamas?! Perhaps the world as well.

~ Dara Gorman, Owner,

I can rescue, rehab, and repurpose horses.

I don’t plan on changing my lifestyle much,

~ Renee Conti, Co-owner, Chesterdale’s

For me, retirement is not defined by

its traditional definition: stopping to

work. I think of it as a time of financial

security where I have the flexibility

to do what I want without relying on

a paycheck. It is the next phase of

my life where I can take my skills or

passions that I have not fully realized

and continue to evolve as a human

being. And if I get paid to do this,

that’s a bonus!
