design statement My name is Lisa Christopher, a graduate of Chatham University in the Master of Interior Architecture program. My design philosophy

compliments my work experience in public library service, an education in communications and a

curiosity of people and places.

My professional experience is largely grounded in Library Sciences. Library service has elevated

my appreciation for books as objects and has led me to piles of antiquated texts. I enjoy

using color and images to create collages. I find inspiration in nature, food, discarded books, and

found objects.

concept statement

Since the disappearance of Pittsburgh’s steel industry, hazelwood has faced devastating economic and population decline. Long-time residents of hazelwood, neighborhood interest groups and community organizations are seeking revitalization of this once prosperous area.

exposure to culture and the artistic process is a feature that will draw the community to the 2nd Avenue business corridor as well as

create a destination point for visitors.

Success of the proposed artist-in-residence program will result in an active community node. Key circulation areas will be most energetic on

the sidewalk of 2nd Avenue and the new addition of the gallery and lounge. this area will be dynamic, presenting unobstructed views to

other parts of the building and riverfront.

concept statement

established in 1814, the Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh has experienced many phases of transition. today, young transplants coexist next to blue-collar workers and lifelong residents. Lawrenceville businesses celebrate an independent nature with vibrant retail, food and art. Above all, an appreciation of the neighborhood’s roots, from its rivers, to Steven Foster, the Allegheny Arsenal and industry drive the design of hotel 1814.
