The list is likely to be sent to the cabinet next month. With an aim to strengthen and revitalise urban local bodies (ULBs), the government has introduced a citychallenge system for selecting smart cities on the basis of urban amenities, demographic profile and financial situation especially the portion spent on municipal salaries. "Initiatives to set up 100 Smart Cities in the country by 2022 are underway and being implemented at a very fast pace," the minister said at the Session on "Urbanization & Smart Cities: Realizing the Investment Potential" at the CII National Conference & Annual Session 2015 focusing on " Building India: A Shared Responsibility". The minister further assured the industry that out of the total corpus of 14th Finance Commission, some grant would also be allocated to ULBs in order to improve and enhance their financial condition. Reiterating his government's stand on the ambitious programme of development of 100 smart cities, he added that the financial resources would be the key to steer this massive agenda ahead. "It would also be imperative to have smart leadership not only at the helm of central government but also at the municipal level who can take bold decisions in every urban area and more importantly, smart people who are willing to support smart leaders in execution of the designated plans," he said. NEW DELHI: The union urbandevelopment ministry will finalise the list of100 smart cities across the country by theend of this month, said minister VenkaiahNaidu. The list is likely to be sent to thecabinet next month.

With an aim to strengthen and revitaliseurban local bodies (ULBs), the governmenthas introduced a citychallenge system forselecting smart cities on the basis of urbanamenities, demographic profile andfinancial situation especially the portionspent on municipal salaries.

"Initiatives to set up 100 Smart Cities in thecountry by 2022 are underway and beingimplemented at a very fast pace," theminister said at the Session on "Urbanization & Smart Cities: Realizing the InvestmentPotential" at the CII National Conference & Annual Session 2015 focusing on " BuildingIndia: A Shared Responsibility".
