Two Dollars a Year. OUR NEW ORLEAYS LETTER, Items of Interest from the Crescent City by Our Regular Correspondent. NEw OJtLEAsS, August 1, 1882. BDITOr CHIEF; Much indignation is professed by the Democratic parish committee at an ex- posure of ballot box stmuling, and the mourbon press-which vouchsafed not a word at the disgraceful stuffing done in the thirteenth and lourteenth wards at tihe recent election for a member of the House -are preaching and fnumilng about the ,purity of elections. This alleget stuffing wans done at thti recment primlary election in Algiers (fifteenth ward) held Saturday week. Heon. E. Quinti and one P. Hiea- nessey charge each other with the act. This ward is very largely Republican, and as it is imnpossiblo for a Democrat to be elected there by a fair election, Mr. llilllln's guilt can be pre-supposed. A conmmittee of five has been appointed front the parish conmmittee to investigate the affair and some flattering (I) disclos- ures are expected. The Board of levee conlnlissioners for the fourth levee district has levied an extra tax of five mills on the dollar upon all taxable property in the district. IL is thought by the State Engineers that even this amount will not cover all ne- cessary expenses, aud without the gen- eral government colnes to our aid, the sugar parishes will be left to the mercy of another rise of the great national highway, the Mississippi river. The most disastrous fire which has oc- curred here since the war, took place on Sunday morning. In the block where the old standing firm of E. J. Hart does business, $250,000 worth of property was laid in ashes. S. Hernsheim & Co.'s tobacco house loses over $100,000 by the catastrophe, which is fully covered by insurance; the other losses are: John Nelson & Co., $50,000, Harrison & Betti- son, about $5000. J. B. Camors, $10,000, and J. G. Pascal & Co. $6000. The buildings, which belonged to the Poy- dras Orphan Asylum, are a total wreck. At this time it is impossible to fuilly esti- inmate the loss. The foreign insurance companies hold most of the risks. The Pickwick club have now under ,consideration plans for their new build- ing which will shortly be erected at the corner of Carondelet and Canal streets. It will extend sixty-four feet on Canal, * and one hundred and thirty feet on Car- ondelet, and will be about ninety feet : high. It is said that Messrs. Hiusdale & Marble are the lucky contractors who 'bave drawn the winning card; enough is known to warrant the statement that a magnificent and palatial building will Sshortly adorn the chosen corner. No ex- Ipense will be spared in making the club house equal if not superior to any on this continent. News keeps coining into the Granite building from all quarters to the effect that Kellogg delegates have been elected in most of the parishes of the Third Dis- trict. Beattie seems to be putting his case in the hands of the people, and is evidently ignoring the action of the colt- Svention. He is an enigma to the Solons -of the Custom-HIouse, who pretend to show that he is a beaten man already. SE. John Ellis is to be endorsed in the Second District and will support Kellogg for Speaker of the next House. S Yours truly, W. H. Y. A Good Foundation. OUR NEW ORLEAYS LETTER,Items of Interest from the Crescent City

by Our Regular Correspondent.NEw OJtLEAsS, August 1, 1882.

BDITOr CHIEF;

Much indignation is professed by theDemocratic parish committee at an ex-posure of ballot box stmuling, and themourbon press-which vouchsafed not a

word at the disgraceful stuffing done inthe thirteenth and lourteenth wards at tiherecent election for a member of the House-are preaching and fnumilng about the,purity of elections. This alleget stuffing

wans done at thti recment primlary electionin Algiers (fifteenth ward) held Saturdayweek. Heon. E. Quinti and one P. Hiea-nessey charge each other with the act.This ward is very largely Republican,and as it is imnpossiblo for a Democrat tobe elected there by a fair election, Mr.

llilllln's guilt can be pre-supposed. Aconmmittee of five has been appointedfront the parish conmmittee to investigatethe affair and some flattering (I) disclos-ures are expected.

The Board of levee conlnlissioners forthe fourth levee district has levied anextra tax of five mills on the dollar uponall taxable property in the district. ILis thought by the State Engineers thateven this amount will not cover all ne-cessary expenses, aud without the gen-eral government colnes to our aid, thesugar parishes will be left to the mercyof another rise of the great nationalhighway, the Mississippi river.

The most disastrous fire which has oc-curred here since the war, took place onSunday morning. In the block wherethe old standing firm of E. J. Hart doesbusiness, $250,000 worth of property waslaid in ashes. S. Hernsheim & Co.'stobacco house loses over $100,000 by thecatastrophe, which is fully covered byinsurance; the other losses are: JohnNelson & Co., $50,000, Harrison & Betti-son, about $5000. J. B. Camors, $10,000,and J. G. Pascal & Co. $6000. Thebuildings, which belonged to the Poy-dras Orphan Asylum, are a total wreck.At this time it is impossible to fuilly esti-inmate the loss. The foreign insurance

companies hold most of the risks.The Pickwick club have now under

,consideration plans for their new build-ing which will shortly be erected at thecorner of Carondelet and Canal streets.It will extend sixty-four feet on Canal,

* and one hundred and thirty feet on Car-ondelet, and will be about ninety feet

: high. It is said that Messrs. Hiusdale &Marble are the lucky contractors who

'bave drawn the winning card; enoughis known to warrant the statement thata magnificent and palatial building will

Sshortly adorn the chosen corner. No ex-Ipense will be spared in making the clubhouse equal if not superior to any onthis continent.

News keeps coining into the Granitebuilding from all quarters to the effectthat Kellogg delegates have been electedin most of the parishes of the Third Dis-trict. Beattie seems to be putting hiscase in the hands of the people, and isevidently ignoring the action of the colt-

Svention. He is an enigma to the Solons-of the Custom-HIouse, who pretend toshow that he is a beaten man already.

SE. John Ellis is to be endorsed in theSecond District and will support Kelloggfor Speaker of the next House.

S Yours truly, W. H. Y.

A Good Foundation.In American houisehollds tile prevailing

complluinlts are woeukeess of the stomllach andits consequences, Indigestion, Nervousnes

.andi Rheumatism. Such sufferers can lay agood foundation for health by using Par-her's Ginger Tonic as it tones up the stomach

:and nerves, and keeps the kidneys active to•carry off the foul matter.-N. 0. Picayune.

Beware of Imitations.The delicate odor of Floreston Cologne is;

entirely novel. Look for signatures of lls-cox & Co., N. T., on each bottle.
