Jerusalem, whose name to some means the ‘City of Peace,’ has been anything but peaceful during the past four millennia. There have been at least 118 separate conflicts in and for this city, ranging from local religious struggles to strategic military campaigns. Jerusalem has been destroyed completely at least twice, besieged 23 times, attacked an additional 52 times, captured and recaptured 44 times, experienced 20 revolts and innumerable

We sponsored the Lightning Chicas team in the Sally Ride TOYchallenge: Jessica Aragon, Mariana Camacho, Virginia Chavez, Aysha Mahmood, Stephanie Martinez, Claire Paz, Olga Paz, and Blanca Sanchez from Stedwick ES, Neelsville MS and Forest Oak MS. Their coach is Carolyn Camacho and assistant coach is Beth King. The Chicas were selected as finalists to compete in the East Coast National Showcase on May 7 at the Sigma Xi Center in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Their toy is named “DISASTER!”.
NIST staff selected as national Sigma Xi Distinguished Lecturers: Alicia Clay (ITL), Charles Fenimore (ITL), and Albert Paul (MSEL).

This talk will cover recent archaeological discoveries to illustrate how archaeology, politics, and nationalism are frequently linked in the troubled environment of the Middle East today, especially when ancient conflicts and their archaeology are used as propaganda by modern military and political leaders.
