This list is mainly based on the two following books as well as data from the Personnel Department in NMS and on first hand information: Danbolt, Erling: Det Norske Misjonsselskaps misjonærer 1842 – 1948. The numbers in column one in the list have been taken from the reference numbers in the two books. Missionaries in Danbolt’s book cover pages 1-17 (until reference #499), and those in Meling’s book begin on page 17 (from reference #233). The years given below the names in column two indicate the period of work for the NMS in South Africa.

Born in Sogn, 18 June 1817. Cand. Theol. 1841 and ordained as pastor 1843. Ordained as mission Bishop in 1866. Stayed in Natal from 1844 till 1851, trying to get admission to Zululand. He founded and ranUmpumulo mission station from 1850-51, Empangeni from 1851-52, Entumeni from 1852-73. Worked for The Norwegian Schreuder Mission 1873-1882. Founded Untunjambili mission station 1873 and died there in 1882.

First wife. Married at Umpumulo 25 April 1858. Born 23 August 1814 and died at Untunjambili 16 February 1878

1c Vedeler, Johanne Margrethe

Second wife. Married at Entumeni 10 November 1879. Born in Bergen 10 February 1835 and came to SA as a teacher 1866. Returned to Norway 1895. Died in Bergen 7 April 1898.

Born in 1819. Smith and vet. Assistant to Schreuder. Moved back to Norway in 1847.

Born in Bergen 3 December 1812. Ordained by Schreuder at Empangeni 1860. Umpumulo 1861-60. Empangeni 1862-63. He founded and stayed at Inhlazatshe from 1863 till he died there 21 March 1890 (Never went back to Norway)

Born in Eidskog, Norway, 1828/29. Carpenter. Assistant missionary, economy adviser at Empangeni 1860-1861, Eshowe 1861-1863, Inhlazatshe 1863-1865, Imfule 1865-1868, Entumeni 1868-1871, took part in founding Kwalabisa 1871 and then became a farmer in Natal. Died in Durban 20 April 1912.

Born in Bergen, Norway 17 May 1833. Assistant missionary and mechanic at Entumeni and Mahlabatini 1860-1865. Returned to Norway and left the NMS. Returned to South Africa and worked for the mission a short period ca 1875. Stayed as a colonist in Durban. Died in Durban 29 April 1912.

Born in Vennesland, Norway 23 November 1835. Farmer and pastor from the first class at the Mission School. Ordained 1864. Entumeni 1865-68 (while Schreuder was in Norway in 1866), Mahlabatini, Umbonambi (which he founded), Entumeni, Eshowe, Ungoye and Durban where he died 3 October 1902.

Born in Tingvold, Norway 28 august 1845. Worked for the missionaries as registered midwife and nurse. Left NMS in 1886. Died in Durban 23 September 1941. Married in 1886 to Natal farmer Hans Olsen.

Born in Lyngdal, Norway 9 December 1855. Sister of Christian Oftebro (no 51) Worked with the Norwegian children at Umpumulo ca.1889. Left NMS 1890.Died in Durban in June 1899. Married to wagon manufakturer Gustav Hojem. Died in Durban 24 December 1898.
