Note: This treaty is the first one of record at which the Six Nations agreed formally to “light a new fire” with an English colony outside of New York. They had previously had some informal, and perhaps semi-secret, dealings with Pennsylvania while treating formally with tributary Indian communities in the Susquehanna valley; but for the formal grand treaty of 1722 Pennsylvania’s governor Sir William Keith journeyed to Albany.

This 1723 treaty therefore marks the beginning of a breakdown in Albany’s exclusive control of English political relations with the Iroquois. It was followed in 1763 by a Pennsylvania treaty that lit another new fire at Philadelphia, an by still another new fire at Lancaster, Pa., for Virginia and Maryland in 1744. After that, Virginia treated with the “Mingo” Iroquois of the Ohio country at Logstown in 1752.

The intercolonial pulling and hauling against each other led eventually to such confusion that the English crown tried to restore order by convoking the Albany Congress of 1754. This failing to produce the desired harmony, the crown created the royal post of Superintendent of Indian Affairs for the Northern District, appointed Sir William Johnson to it, and gave him exclusive responsibility – which he had some difficulty in preserving against colonial encroachments.

American State Papers, Indian Affairs, 1: 5-12) Oct. 23, 1784 On the 23d of October 1784, the day after the signing of the

Treaty wit the U.S. Commissioners, the Six Nations ceded to the Commonwealth the residue of their lands with our limits. By this cession the title of those Indians to the lands across the Allegheny river was extinguished. The Pennsylvania Commissioners, who had attended at Fort Stanwix in October, 1784, proceeded soon after to Fort M’Intosh, now Beaver, to meet the Delaware and Wyandott Indians. At that place those Indians executed a deed, on the 21st of January 1785, conveying to this commonwealth the same lands which had previously been conveyed by the Six Nations. Sixty three years have, therefore, almost elapsed since white settlements in that region became legal, and what a wonderful change has been worked in that time in the appearance of the country. A great State Canal, and State Penitentiary, extensive manufacturing establishments, and splendid private residences are now the substitutes for Indian Wigwams; and where the Indian canoes formerly plied, bridges, aqueducts, and steamers now exist.
