• Acknowledge and accept all of your child’s emo-tions. This helps your child eel sa e and secure and willingto share all kinds o eelings with you. “Are you eelinghappy? I see a big smile on your ace.”
• Tell your child what you see him doing rather thansaying “Good job.” He will know that you see and appre-ciate his e orts. “Wow, you’ve added lots o squiggly linesand circles to your drawing.”
• Help your child make connections to familiarexperiences, ideas, or information. “Good morning.I know you like pineapple. Today we’re having papaya or break ast. I think you’ll like it as much as pineapple. Let’ssee what you think about it.”
Your ch ld comes home every day w th stor es to share.
Do you stop what you are do ng and l sten carefully? Your
ch ld probably asks a lot of quest ons. Do you try to answer
them? if you can respond yes to these quest ons, then you
already know the bene ts of g v ng your ch ld t me and
attent on. Teachers call these da ly commun cat on opportu-n t espowerful interactions. They help adults and ch ldren
keep n touch and enjoy be ng together. These nteract ons
also support ch ldren’s learn ng. Here are some commun ca-
t on t ps and examples of the types of th ngs to say.
• Offer a small challenge to nudge your child to trysomething new or a bit harder. “You ran so ast to the

• Repeat and extend what your child says to you. Ayour child looks through a book and says, “I like lizards,”you might say, “I know you like lizards. What do you like
about them?’• Use interesting words to build your child’s vocabu-
lary. “I think this ice cream is delicious. I love the creamytexture and swirls o caramel.”
Powerful interactions are rich giftsyou give your child every day.
