He was only 2 years old and was called Keiko which means “Lucky One” in Japanese. He was soon sold to a marine park in Mexico, where he performed tricks for people. In 1993 he became famous when he starred in the movie “Free Willy” and won the hearts of millions of people around the world.

A 12 year old boy, Jesse, gets in trouble with the law because he writes graffiti around the marine park. Jesse is given the job of cleaning up the mess. He becomes friends with Willy and helps him to jump over the marine park wall to freedom.

At first he was forgotten until someone found him living in awful conditions. He was underweight and the pool he swam in was too small for a whale, and the water too warm. An international campaign was started to raise money to save him.

They began the search for a place where Keiko could be brought back to health and trained for possible release to the wild. The Free Willy Foundation was started in November with a $4 million donation from the producers of the movie.

His new pool had cold, natural sea water. The trainers fed him live fish to try to teach him to hunt for food. He gained weight and his health improved. He caught his first live fish a year later.

You are going to read a text about Keiko in two sections. Each section has answer choices from A - H. Choose the best topic sentence for the paragraphs and blacken the circle on your answer sheet. There are three answer choices for each section you will not use.

He was flown to his native Iceland and was put in a sea tank. The new trainers wanted to get him interested in the natural ocean environment and not to depend on humans for survival.

Killer whales canonly survive in groups. The trainers put a microchip on him and let him swim in the sea by himself. He spent as many as four days at sea playing with other whales and competing with them for food. This was a good sign, but he liked to return to his sea tank and the company of humans.

He quickly joined a group of killer whales off the coast of Iceland. He was on his own for nearly two months without food from humans and was in excellent physical condition. He swam 1400 kilometers to Norway, but then separated from the other whales.

The unexpected visitor thrilled Norwegians who petted him, swam with him, and even rode on his back. It seemed that Keiko missed the company of humans. He quickly became a tourist attraction.

Organizations in some countries felt the winter in Norway would be too cold for him, while others disagreed. Finally, it was decided that he would stay in Norway to be looked after by whale keepers. Sadly, 18 months after his release Keiko died of pneumonia at the age of 27. Killer whales usually live more than 35 years in the wild.
