“One of the 100 Most Improved Schools in the Country” DFE January 2014
WelcomeYou want the very best for your child. Lister is now a highly
regarded school, recognised by the Department for Education as
one of the most improved in the country in the last three years.
Students’ achievement in their GCSEs has risen for each of the
last four years. You can send your child to Lister with confidence,
knowing that they will receive an education which stretches them
academically whilst giving them a broad range of opportunities
within a safe, supportive and forward thinking community.
We know how challenging the transition from primary to secondary
can be. Our successful ‘Induction Fortnight’ in July allows Year 6
students to spend time with us so that they really get to know the
school before they arrive in Year 7.
Our staff are determined to give the highest possible standard
of education — they are highly qualified and committed to
improving standards and results every year. I am very proud of our
achievements and encourage you to visit this exciting and vibrant
community. Come and see us at one of our open events or, if you
prefer, contact me directly for an appointment.
Anthony Wilson, Headteacher
“We know we have a strong Leadership Team that can keep Lister moving forward to be even more successful.” DAVE WOOD, CHAIR OF GOVERNORS
“A culture of learning and high aspirations across the school.” OFSTED 2013
“The support and encouragement from my teachers helped me to achieve 11A*s and an A at GCSE last year — I am very grateful to Lister for the help they gave me.” INAYAT, CLASS OF 2013
HighAcademicStandardsOur core purpose is to provide the highest possible quality of
education for our students. We recruit and develop outstanding
teachers and we are continually seeking to improve the quality of
our teaching.
Our Library is at the heart of the school, and students are encouraged
to develop their love of reading. Our approach in the classroom is to
encourage independent learners, able to speak, read and write with
confidence and to express their views clearly.
“Teaching over time is good and, in a growing number of lessons, is outstanding.” OFSTED 2013
“I’m very proud to be a senior student. You don’t just dress differently. You actually are responsible for making the school even better.” YEAR 11 SENIOR STUDENT
Character and Leadership
While exam results are important,
we never forget the importance of
good behaviour. All members of our
community are encouraged to treat
each other with kindness, politeness
and consideration. High expectations
of behaviour, supported by a well
developed system of rewards and
sanctions, help to create a calm
atmosphere so that learning can take
place.
Student Leadership positions are one of the many ways that
students learn to take responsibility, and Student Leaders are role
models for younger students. Our vertical tutoring system means
that new students get to know pupils from older years, creating a
supportive and friendly environment.
OpportunityLister offers a broad and rich curriculum catering to individual needs.
Alongside our strengths in the more traditional academic subjects
we also ensure that there is a chance for all students to discover and
excel in the subjects which they can be passionate about.
Students can get involved
in a very wide range of
enrichment activities,
including dance shows, drama
productions, debating clubs,
chess clubs, trips, visits and
a wide range of sports. Our
aim for excellence applies in
these areas as much as in any
other. We are very proud of
our national champions in
fencing, and the awards won
by our students who have entered national computer programming
and Business & Enterprise competitions.
We were very proud that in 2013 we became the first partner school in the Music in Secondary Schools Trust, supported by Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber. This, together with the support of Newham’s Every Child a Musician programme, is ensuring that Lister has one of the most exciting secondary music programmes in the country. All new students are provided with an instrument and receive specialist instrumental teaching. We believe all our students benefit from the self-discipline and enjoyment that comes from making music together.
“When I arrived at Lister last year, I found it a very professional atmosphere, but also very friendly – staff and students are welcoming, and everyone smiles at you when you go around the building”
SARAH HENDY, HEAD OF MUSIC
Care and Support
The House system has become a
key part of the way that students
are supported. Students join one
of the five houses — Hawking,
Galileo, Da Vinci, Shelley and
King. These Houses are small
communities within which each
student can find a secure base.
Each House has a senior teacher
as their Head of House, and also a dedicated Pastoral Manager and
House Support Officer. Brothers and sisters are assigned to the
same house, which helps to build up good relationships between the
House team and the family. Tutors review pupils’ progress in regular
one to one meetings and feed back directly to parents every term.
“The school manages behaviour well and staff are consistent in their use of the school behaviour policy . . . Students say that they feel very safe.” OFSTED 2013
We employ a large range of specialist staff to meet the varying needs of
pupils at different points in their school career. This includes our outstanding
Deaf Support Department, a School Home Support Worker and a Student
Counsellor as well as staff experienced in Special Educational Needs. We
want to ensure that all students feel safe and supported, and encouraged to
fulfil their potential, whatever their starting point.
“The House really does feel like a family, and the older students made us very welcome when we arrived.” YEAR 8 STUDENT
