SEATWORK- Tuesday

We waded through the cold water with our backpacks balanced on our heads. I couldn't stop thinking about the waterfall.

-ed and -ing usually appear at the end of verbs (action words)

-ed at the end of a word usually means that the action happened in the past.

-ing ending usually means that the action is happening in the present.

Rules to follow:1. When a base word ends with e, the e is dropped before -ed or -ing is added (hike/hiked/hiking)

3

Page 4: Literacy By Design: The Bake Sale Battle Level Q€¦  · Web viewTry it. Circle the -ed or -ing of each word and decode the word. swimming together rain drummed on the leaves breathing

2. When a base word ends with a vowel and a consonant, the consonant is usually doubled before -ed or -ing is added (grin/grinned/grinning)

3. Not every word that ends with the letters ed or ing is made up of a base word and ending.Examples: red, sing, agreed

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------When we stood at the top, we slapped five. Let us decode the underlined word slapped-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I see the -ed at the end of this word. When I remove it, I see a base word I know, slap but with two p's. There are two p's because when a base word ends with a vowel and a consonant, the consonant is usually doubled before adding -ed.

I think the letter a makes a short vowel sound because it's a vowel followed by a consonant. /SLAPT/ That makes sense in the sentence. Sometimes I slap five with my friends too when I'm excited about something.

The Electricity Mystery – ContractionsSeatwork- Wednesday ___/ 10

Contractions1. A contraction is a combination of two words.

8

Page 9: Literacy By Design: The Bake Sale Battle Level Q€¦  · Web viewTry it. Circle the -ed or -ing of each word and decode the word. swimming together rain drummed on the leaves breathing

2. In a contraction, an apostrophe (’) takes the place of missing letters.3. There are affirmative contractions and negative contractions.

positive contractions a positive contraction refers to a kind of contraction that declares an affirmative action or state of being., "he'll go to the store," is the positive contraction word combination "he'll." The contraction is positive because it affirms an action that will happen in the future.

negative contractions the opposite of a positive contraction is a negative contraction. It is a contraction, but instead of affirming, it negates by combining the word "not" to a part of speech, usually a "be" verb. As an example; the statement "She won't be coming to the party" is negative. The contraction is the word "won't." It is negative because it denies an occurrence.

Contractions are very common in spoken English. They are not so common in written English. We may use contractions in a friendly letter, for example, but they are not usually correct in more formal texts such as business letters or essays. If you have to write an essay in an exam, do not use contractions. The only exception to this would be when you quote somebody within your essay, for example spoken dialogue.

Insert the Apostrophe

1. Hes going outside because hes hot.2. Theyve finished eating and theyre full.3. Lets play ball today.4. Ive lost my book and Ill need it later.5. You shouldnt run, I cant keep up to you.6. They arent coming now so lets go home.7. Theyre leaving soon and Ill have to go too.8. Its a sunny day so lets go outside.9. She didnt look too happy.10. Seatwork- ThursdayRead the passages and answer the questions that follow. READ THE QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU BEGIN READING AS THEY WILL HELP READ WITH A PURPOSE.

A ruler is used to measure the length, width or depth of an object. Rulers come in all types with all different measurements on them. They are in feet, inches, meters, centimeters, etc. Rulers look like thin slats marked out in English or Metric units of measure. In the US they are typically one foot in length or 3 feet in length (yardstick). You can think of tape measures as a special kind of ruler. Tape measures come in a wide variety of lengths.

A balance scale is an instrument used to measure the weight of objects by comparing their weights to a set of known weights. Lady Justice, a symbol of an impartial legal system since Ancient Rome, is seen holding a balance scale, on which she is said to weigh the merits of both sides of the case. When measuring the mass of one object, such as a salt crystal, in a school or professional science experiment, place the object on one side of the balance scale and a labeled set of various weights on the opposite side to show the difference in mass between the object and the weights. Add or remove weights until the scale

balances and you have the object's correct weight.

Thermometers measure temperature, by using materials that change in some way when they are heated or cooled. In a mercury or alcohol thermometer the liquid expands as it is heated and contracts when it is cooled, so the length of the liquid column is longer or shorter depending on the temperature. Modern thermometers are calibrated in standard temperature units such as Fahrenheit (used in the United States) The Fahrenheit scale divided the freezing and boiling points of water into 180 degrees. 32°F was the freezing pint of water and 212°F was the boiling point of water. The Celsius temperature scale is also referred to as the "centigrade" scale. Centigrade means "consisting of or divided into 100 degrees". The Celsius scale has 100 degrees between the freezing point (0°C) and boiling point (100°C) of pure water at sea level air pressure. (used in Canada).

13

The Kelvin Scale measures the ultimate extremes of hot and cold. In the 19th century, scientists were researching what was the lowest temperature possible. The Kelvin scale uses the same units as the Celsius scale, but it starts at ABSOLUTE ZERO, the temperature at which everything including air freezes solid. Absolute zero is O K, which is - 273°C degrees Celsius. Kelvin is used mostly by scientists).A hand lens is a small device used to magnify something that a scientist is looking at. A hand lens consists of a lens made of a piece of glass or plastic. The lens is usually attached to a frame that can be swivelled so the lens moves inside a protective cover. Many items can only be identified by viewing very small characteristics. Scientists often carry a hand lens as this helps them examine small or hard to see characteristics.

Maybe you've been out looking at the stars in the night sky, searching for constellations; or maybe you've already learned your way around the constellations, and now you'd like to take a closer look -- at objects like the moon, planets, or stars -- with the aid of a telescope. A telescope is a device used to magnify distant objects. There are many types to choose from, and many price ranges to consider. How do you know which one is best for you? How can you be sure that you won't be disappoin-ted when you take your new telescope out to see the stars?

Binoculars, optical instruments consisting of two small telescopes mounted side by side, one for each eye, and a focusing mechanism. By having a lens system for each eye, these instruments provide three-dimensional viewing. They also generally provide a wide field of view. Binoculars are typically designed to magnify the image of an object 6 to 12 times. Binoculars are rated both by the magnification they produce and the diameter (in millimeters) of the objective lens. Thus 6 x 30 binoculars magnify 6 times and have objective lenses 30 millimeters in diameter. The larger the objective lens, the greater its ability to gather light.

A beaker is a simple container for stirring, mixing and heating liquids commonly used in many laboratories. It is really just a round glass container with a flat bottom. The use of the beaker is to hold and pour liquids. They come in many sizes, from tiny

ones that hold only a small volume such as10 mL to giant ones that hold many liters. Most also have a small spout (or "beak") to aid pouring as shown in the picture. They can also be used to heat liquids.

READ THE QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU BEGIN READING AS THEY WILL HELP READ WITH A PURPOSE.

WHAT'S A WATERSHED? Not everyone lives next to a stream or pond but all of us live in a watershed. The watershed is the land area that drains into a body of water. You can also think of it as the land area that drains to a common outlet, such as the outflow of a lake, the mouth of a river, or any point along a stream channel. A drop of water falling in a watershed that does not evaporate or become part of a plant or animal will leave the watershed at this outlet. The path water takes across the land is determined mainly by gravity. High places -- ridges, mountains, and hills -- form divides between adjacent watersheds. Water always flows downhill. The outer boundary of a watershed, therefore, is formed by the ridges and hills surrounding a given body of water. Precipitation (rain, snow, etc.) falling directly on the watershed boundary will be split between the watersheds on either side.

PARTS OF A WATERSHED The watershed of most lakes and rivers consists of a network of streams, wetlands, human-made channels and storm drains, and the surrounding upland. At any point in the watershed, precipitation runs off the land

16

Page 17: Literacy By Design: The Bake Sale Battle Level Q€¦  · Web viewTry it. Circle the -ed or -ing of each word and decode the word. swimming together rain drummed on the leaves breathing

surface and collects in these natural and human-made drainage pathways. As precipitation moves it follows the lay of the land, or topography. Some precipitation seeps into the ground where it moves through the soil and may emerge at a nearby surface body of water; some penetrates more deeply to replenish regional groundwater supplies.

Wetlands Wetlands, such as wooded swamps, marshes and bogs, slow the flow of incoming water and temporarily store this water before releasing it downstream. By slowing the flow, wetlands protect downstream areas from flooding. Slow movement of water through wetland vegetation also helps to settle sediments and remove certain pollutants, thereby improving water quality. Wetlands also provide habitat for fish and wildlife. When wetlands are filled or channelized these natural functions are lost. Uplands Uplands are the drier, well-drained areas of the watershed. Most streams and lakes receive most of their water from the upland portions of their watersheds. Upland sites with sandy, coarse-textured soil readily allow precipitation to pass through them and they serve as important groundwater recharge areas. Uplands with fine-textured, less permeable soil may not provide significant groundwater recharge. Precipitation falling on these areas seeps into the shallow soil layers or moves slowly along the soil surface before collecting in small streams and wetlands. When uplands are developed by people, this natural absorption and filtering process is bypassed. Precipitation falling on paved surfaces quickly washes downstream, carrying sediment and other pollutants, eroding stream banks and increasing flooding. The Electricity Mystery – Genres: Question and Answer BooksHomework- Thursday (continued) ___/ 20 (12 for the essay on page 17)

THE AQUATIC ECOSYSTEM The watershed network makes it possible for pollutants to reach a body of water located many miles from the pollution source. Groundwater recharge areas also transport pollution, although subsurface water moves much more slowly than surface water. The materials that reach a river or lake through the watershed affect the chemical and physical environment in which a complex association of plants, animals and microorganisms exist. These interrelated organisms and their environment are referred to as the aquatic ecosystem. The watershed is part of this ecosystem. Changes in the watershed will affect other parts of the ecosystem downstream.

HOW PEOPLE AFFECT THE AQUATIC ECOSYSTEM

17

Page 18: Literacy By Design: The Bake Sale Battle Level Q€¦  · Web viewTry it. Circle the -ed or -ing of each word and decode the word. swimming together rain drummed on the leaves breathing

All of us living within a particular watershed have the ability to make changes in the environment which can intentionally or inadvertently affect aquatic ecosystems, even when activities are far from any shore. These changes include many common activities such as the construction of homes, roads and shopping centers. Projects such as these prevent water from entering into the ground. Precipitation must be redirected to prevent flooding in these areas. This can change the pattern of water flow in a watershed, increase the amount of water that reaches a body of water and allow it to get there faster without the opportunity for removal of pollutants by slow filtration through the soil. The cultivation of crops, lawns and livestock can also affect a watershed. These activities can increase the inputs of nutrients, sediment, and toxic substances from human sources and seriously impair streams, ponds and groundwater resources.

Question on Watersheds: Please answer the multiple choice questions. Then go on and answer the essay question on the following page.

1) What is a watershed?a) The land area that drains into a body of water.b) Evaporation that occurs over the oceanc) The body of water that drains into a land area.d) Filtration of water through the soil

2) What is an Upland?a) Areas such as wooded swamps, marshes and bogs, slow the flow of

incoming waterb) An increase in the amount of water that reaches a body of waterc) Drier , well-drained areas of the watershedd) Filtration of water through the soil
