Our Mission and Values

Literacy Partners believes that the ability to read is an essential element of an enriched and fulfilling life. Our high-quality, community-based literacy programs in New York City empower adults to reach their full potential as individuals, parents and citizens.

3

We value education because it broadens an individual’s worldview and strengthens the family, workplace and community. We value opportunity because it opens doors beyond the pages of a book and forms the foundation for self-empowerment. We value achievement because it is a vehicle to an enriched life. Drive and determination create self-sufficient, confident individuals. We value impact because effectively targeting a root cause of social issues generates a ripple effect, improving health, the economy and society at large.

Letter from the Chairman of the Board Mark H. Jackson

Dear Friends, As you will see from this Annual Report, Fiscal Year 2012 at Literacy Partners has been an exciting one, filled with challenges and triumphs that have helped sustain the organization as the leading provider of literacy services to individuals and families throughout New York City. The Board of Directors and staff achieved milestone objectives outlined in its three-year Strategic Plan. Literacy Partners also underwent a rebranding initiative to enhance our visibility and broaden our student, volunteer and donor bases. The 2012 Annual Gala Evening of Readings was one of our most successful yet and provided us with $1.2 million in revenue to help support the expansion of our important programs and services. Also, in September 2012, we celebrated the 1st Anniversary of PUSH (Partners United in Strengthening Harlem). The Literacy Zone helps to provide our students and community members with comprehensive services to ensure their success. After the departure of former Executive Director, Susan McLean, the Board conducted a comprehensive search and hired Anthony Tassi to lead the organization. We believe that Anthony’s unique combination of work experience, professional accomplishments, talent and energy, make him precisely the right person to help grow our organization at this time. Anthony brings to Literacy Partners a deep understanding of the adult literacy world, especially the issues facing New York City. He served as the Founding Executive Director of the Mayor’s Office of Adult Education from March 2006 to October 2010 and is responsible for convincing Mayor Bloomberg to create a central office to coordinate and promote best practices among nine city agencies and numerous nonprofit literacy programs. As you read through this report, we hope you realize that all our successes are made possible by your unwavering and generous support. On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff and students, thank you for helping us in our efforts to alleviate the burdens caused by illiteracy and enhance the lives of families and their communities. Sincerely,

Letter from Literacy Partners’ Teacher Steven Clarke

Dear Friends, My name is Steven Clarke, and I teach Adult Basic Education (ABE) and Pre-GED classes at Literacy Partners. I am honored to be able to write this letter to you today and tell you just how transformative your support has been and will continue to be in the lives of so many of our students. This past academic year, I received the AAACE Teacher of the Year award — an experience that left me both amazed and humbled. Really, I was just doing what I have always done, which is walk into the classroom every day, excited to work with the students in their discovery of new ideas. I always tell them: Be whoever you are. Here, you can make mistakes. They won’t hurt you. There is no teasing. There are no judgments. Everyone here is family. This openness and honesty in the classroom makes it a safe place, a place where the students are able to become broad-minded individuals with the confidence to strive for what they want. Many students enter our programs believing that they are unworthy. Together, we shift this perception. In fact, opportunities are available to everyone, you just need to reach out and grab them. All of my students this year, and in years past, have progressed in their education on a daily basis and grown as people. I’ve had the privilege of seeing two students in particular this past year become aware of their worth and improve their lives. One student finally got the courage to escape a harmful domestic situation. Another, who is HIV positive, began paying attention to his health and started taking his medicine. Through their involvement with Literacy Partners, they gained the confidence and knowledge to make these changes, just as countless other LP students have as well. The students are proud to show everyone what they’re learning — none of which would be possible without our volunteers, partners, and donors. We do transform people’s lives here, and you are a part of it just as much as I am. Thank you for your support. Sincerely,

Our Programs

Our Students Literacy Partners served over 1,500 individuals in our programs with more than 130,000 contact hours in Fiscal Year 2012. Our students were as diverse as New York City itself coming from a variety of backgrounds, covering a wide age range (16-78 years old) and representing both genders equally.

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Over 300 individuals enrolled in our Adult Basic Education courses in Fiscal Year 2012. Students in ABE read at or below a fifth grade level. As learners with the lowest literacy levels at LP, these students receive basic instruction in reading, writing and math. ABE instructor Lanell Gardenhire appreciates when her students thank her for teaching them something that they didn’t know before. “One of my students travels to Nigeria each year to visit his family. He told me that in the past he was unable to fill out the customs card on the plane because he couldn’t read it. After taking my class for a year, he was able to fill out the customs card on his own, without assistance. I was so proud of him, and it felt good to know that I was able to help him and make a difference in his life.” Pre-GED® and GED®

Approximately 400 individuals enrolled in our Pre-GED® and GED® courses, taking the next steps to the successful acquisition of a General Equivalency Diploma. Students with reading levels between fifth and eighth grade participate in the Pre-GED® course and receive instruction in reading, writing, math, social studies and science. Individuals with reading levels at a ninth grade level or above study literature, writing, math, social studies, science and the arts in the GED® course. All our Pre-GED® and GED® students can access our online GED® program, which was launched in the summer of 2011. Pauline Thron, a Pre-GED® student at Time, believes that education is the key to opportunities for her future. “I’ve learned so much, and my progress has been great. I can’t say enough about my time at Literacy Partners and all the help I have received with my reading, writing and math. I believe that education is the way to reach the stars.”

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Over 200 individuals from countries around the world attended Literacy Partners for English instruction in Fiscal Year 2012. In multicultural classes, students explored the English language in order to improve their reading, writing, speaking, listening and grammar skills. ESOL Instructor, Victor Edrosolan, says that hearing about his students’ accomplishments makes it all worth it. “Literacy Partners is the bridge that brings these individuals to the next level.” This couldn’t be truer for Emmy Guerrero, a Dominican immigrant, who was supporting his mother while working two jobs and coming to LP for ESOL instruction. Now, Emmy is enrolled at LaGuardia College and is studying Computer Science. Victor says, “We are building a community of learners in the classroom where they feel safe and support each other. We help one another.” It’s through this community that our students receive support for their goals and ultimately achieve them. Financial Literacy

Literacy Partners conducted over 71 financial literacy workshops in Fiscal Year 2012 serving over 700 community members and LP students. Financial literacy workshops covered topics such as budgeting, taxes, banking, credit and basic investment strategies. For Luz-Maria Lambert, the Financial Literacy Coordinator, the best part of her job is when students realize they can accomplish their financial goals. Job Readiness

In our Job Readiness program, individuals attend a five-week workshop series where they learn how to create cover letters and resumes, communicate effectively in interviews and dress for success. Our Employment and Education Counselor assists students in applying for colleges and obtaining financial aid. Ultimately, our students attend LP because they want to reach their employment and educational goals. The Job Readiness program offers specific steps to achieving those goals. For Wilson C. Rojas, Jr., a student who received his GED® this year, the Job Readiness program enabled him to obtain full-time employment at an electronics store. Wilson is currently enrolled in college where he’s working towards his dream of becoming an EMT.

Skills for Life Literacy Partners aims to provide our students with life-relevant content that will enhance their opportunities for success outside of the classroom. All LP courses integrate health literacy, financial literacy and job readiness into the curricula to ensure a holistic educational experience.

Partners United in Strengthening Harlem PUSH Literacy Zone

Our First Year of Service

Launched on September 8, 2011, our PUSH Literacy Zone was created as a comprehensive resource center focused on strengthening and enhancing our educational programs while providing holistic case management for Harlem community residents and Literacy Partners’ students in need. The goal of PUSH is to provide pathways out of poverty through education and an array of support services that meet the diverse needs of the Harlem community. Areas of need are addressed by utilizing our partnerships with a wide variety of community organizations. In this way, our Family Welcome Center at PUSH serves as a central location for:

Educational support Employment counseling and job readiness Help for at-risk youth Pre and post-natal services Mental health support Medical health services Criminal justice assistance Food and housing support Immigration assistance Legal services Parenting support Foster care Tax preparation assistance and financial literacy Veteran’s services

Life skills workshops for students, their families and the community at large are also hosted at PUSH. Topics range from budgeting to interviewing skills to managing parent-teacher relationships to CPR training. The computer lab at PUSH is also available to those in need for drafting resumes, applying for jobs, conducting research, accessing public assistance and more.

The Numbers at a Glance

These numbers reflect data collected in Fiscal Year 2012 (July 1, 2011—June 30, 2012). Nearly 1,300 individuals were assisted through the Literacy Zone—800 were community members while the remaining approximate 500 were Literacy Partners’ students. Over 500 individuals were enrolled in education services, and over 100 individuals benefitted from access to the computer lab. We value partnerships with 50+ other community organizations and were able to hold 14 workshops with over 100 attendees covering skills ranging from dressing for success to CPR training.

In-Kind Contributions

Our Volunteers Literacy Partners gratefully recognizes & thanks all of our volunteers who play a critical role in our mission bringing their own dedication and passion to the organization and sharing that with our students. “Sharing conversation and stories and practicing reading with the students is so much fun. Using new English vocabulary to build sentences, enjoying coffee together and looking at the local newspapers builds a rich life for both students and volunteer tutors. Our students are the greatest!” -Robin Mitchell, Volunteer Tutor
