Act 1
Show the students the Act 1 video (located in the HWDSB Curriculum Share in The Hub)
Ask students: “What do you wonder?”
Have students come up with different wonderings, students or teacher to record
students wonderings
Focus student thinking to “How many hockey pucks will fit in this classroom?”
Show video again…
Ask students: “How many hockey pucks will fit in this classroom?”
o Give an answer that is too high.
o Give an answer that is too low.
o Guess as close as you can.
o Share some results as class.
Extension: Have students post and share their answers on the Bulldogs Blog and ask other
students how they arrived at their answers. http://bulldogsliteracy.commons.hwdsb.on.ca
Act 2
Ask students: “What information will you need to solve the problem?”
Brainstorm as a class.
Reveal to them the information.
Show them video of the puck measurements. (located in the HWDSB Curriculum Share
in The Hub)
Make sure the students are clear with measurements of the puck. Might want to pause
video and record information as a class.
Give them the room measurements:
o Length:6 metres
o Width: 5 metres
o Height: 3 metres
Activities: Scott Johnson and Scott Macleod (Instructional Coaches) | Layout: Aaron Puley (Engagement)
Allow students time to solve the problem in small groups.
Act 3
Reflect and Connect
Students share and discuss their solutions
Possible consolidating questions:
o How did you calculate the number of pucks in the room?
o What measurements did you use and why?
o What information helped you figure out your answer?
o Compare your estimations to your final product
Is your estimation close to your answer? Why?
Further questions:
Now with this knowledge, how many pucks do you think could fit in the school?

About The Magic Hockey Stick
Inspired by a true story, this fictional tale tells how a little girl, whose parents win Wayne Gretzky's hockey stick at an auction, becomes her hockey's team's star player with it. Meanwhile, "The Great One" goes into the greatest slump of his career. Realizing Gretzky needs the stick more than she does, the girl returns it to him, and Gretzky gets over his thousand-goal slump. http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/book/magic-hockey-stick#cart/cleanup
