The stories we tell about ourselves define who we are. The stories we read or listen to help to define our worldview. When people are given the time and the resources to tell their own stories, they are empowered. When they are given an audience, we strengthen our community through shared experience.

Tens of thousands of people take part in our programming each year. They are of all ages and come from all over the state. Their large numbers remind us that we live in a place in which literature makes a difference every day. It deepens our understanding of the world and the people around us—not just locally, but with people from all over the country and the globe.

At a time of great—and sometimes dangerous—upheaval, our goal is to build a stronger community with the power of literature. Literary Arts has important work before us. Thank you for being a partner in our mission, and for finding your story here.

With appreciation,

OUR MISSION IS TO ENGAGE READERS, SUPPORT WRITERS, AND INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION WITH GREAT LITERATURE.

At Literary Arts, we seek to foster a lifelong love of literature, as well as to strengthen our community of artists who make it.

Together with our staff, volunteers, partners, and donors, Literary Arts served more than 20,000 Oregonians last year. Readers engaged in rich literary experiences at the concert hall, in our community space, and on the radio. Students were inspired by teaching artists, visiting authors, and volunteer mentors. Local writers received support through grants, awards, and residencies.

“Literary Arts is the best of the best. Such a deep commitment to individual readers and entire communities is exactly the kind of medicine our divided America desperately needs.”

—Tracy K. Smith, United States Poet Laureate, 2016/2017 Portland Arts & Lectures Author

EACH YEAR, THE PROGRAMS OF LITERARY ARTS INSPIRE MORE THAN 20,000 OREGONIANS.Over the past five years, we have expanded the breadth of our programming to better serve a wider and more diverse audience. We build community around literature, books, and storytelling, and the essential ideas and issues they raise. Our programs are designed to work together, creating a crossroads for readers and writers of all ages both locally and nationally. The range of our programs offers a multitude of access points—from intimate @LiteraryArts events to large concert halls, and from highly participatory classes and workshops to online content that is available anywhere.

Oregon Literary Fellowship Recipient Stephanie Adams-Santos performed before a Portland Arts & Lectures event.

Our literary lecture events brought readers of all ages to the concert hall, including 1,816 students who received tickets, transportation, and books from our Youth Programs.

Volunteer mentors met with local students during a College Essay Mentoring Project session at Franklin High School.

Literary Arts connects with hundreds of local writers and publishers throughout the year. We celebrate and recognize the remarkable work being created right here in our community through awards and fellowships. We also hire writers to teach classes, and we partner with artists and organizations to host free events in our space and in the community.

OREGON LITERARY FELLOWSHIPSOut-of-state judges selected this year’s diverse group of 11 recipients from more than 450 applicants. In 2017, for the second year, Literary Arts awarded a Fellowship for Writers of Color. Our goal is to represent the diversity of our growing community and to give a voice to those who have historically been excluded.

9 Writers and 2 Publishers awarded fellowships of $3,500 each.

WRITING CLASSESStudents from all levels of experience and backgrounds came to our classes this year to start their memoirs, finish their novels, revise their poems, and join a community of inspired writers. Many of our instructors are Oregon Book Awards authors and Literary Fellowship recipients, and all of them are experienced teachers. Earned income from the classes contributes to the sustainability of our awards program.

12 local writers taught 26 classes for

254 students.

“I was strongly encouraged by the teacher’s dedication. She challenged me to explore my writing more deeply and thoughtfully.”

—Writing Student

@LITERARYARTS EVENTSOur community center downtown is not only a space to showcase the work and talent of local and national organizations, but a chance for our partners to program the types of activities they want to see offered. @LiteraryArts events are open to the public and are free or low-cost. This year we welcomed Unchaste Readers series, Ooligan Press, Portland State University, Oregon Symphony, PDX Jazz, Los Porteños, and many others.

39 free events with 18 community partners.

1,800 total audience.

“To be awarded the Oregon Literary Fellowship from Literary Arts—who has long been an inspiration—is one of the greatest votes of confidence and encouragement a writer could hope for.”

—Santi Elijah Holley, fellowship recipient

OREGON BOOK AWARDS AUTHOR TOURNine Oregon Book Awards authors participated in this year’s tour and visited public high schools, libraries, community centers, and theaters across Oregon. Our Youth Programs inspired more than 4,000 students with a variety of literary opportunities in the classroom and concert hall. By bringing professional writers and award-winning national authors to local high schools, we offer students first-hand experiences that underscore the role literature can play in their lives.

STUDENT READINGSSharing work with friends, family, and community members helps students grow as writers. Students shared their poems, prose, and comics alongside teachers and WITS writers during 11 end-of-residency readings. Twelve students performed their work on stage at Wordstock: Portland’s Book festival.

161 students shared work in front of

625 attendees.

“[My daughter] has been pushed a little more than normal and enjoyed the challenge.”

—Parent of Franklin High School Student

COLLEGE ESSAY MENTORING PROJECTAt Benson, Franklin, Madison, and Roosevelt high schools, we paired volunteer mentors with students working on their essays for college and scholarship applications. Over half of these students reported that they will be the first generation in their family to attend college.

233 students served by

82 volunteer mentors.

“There was such great feedback, being able to connect and share stories, and help getting them onto the paper was such a good experience.”

—Roosevelt High School Student

AUTHOR VISITS AND STUDENTS TO THE SCHNITZHundreds of students engaged with seven award-winning authors in the concert hall and classrooms throughout the year. For example, in February, Irish writer and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Colum McCann visited Madison High School. More than 100 students participated in a Q&A where he spoke about his philosophy of radical empathy.

1,193 attended lecture events.

635 participated in Q&A sessions.

“We need stories to inspire empathy, and we need empathy so badly right now. His [McCann’s] outlook on stories is so accurate and interesting and important.”

—Cleveland High School Student

VERSELANDIA!The annual Verselandia! City-wide Youth Poetry Slam found a new home at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, where students from 12 high schools performed original work in front of Verselandia!’s largest audience yet to compete for the grand slam title.

21 students performed in front of

1,378 peers, parents, and poetry fans.

“I only recently got into slam poetry, but I have been so inspired by the other poets. Now I feel better equipped and ready to tackle new topics and mediums with my writing.”

—Verselandia! finalist

WRITERS IN THE SCHOOLS RESIDENCIESWe partnered with 31 educators at 11 public high schools throughout the year. Grant High School teacher Courtney Palmer hosted author, poet, and performer Turiya Autry, who taught in two classes: African American Literature and Latin American Literature.

23 professional writers hired.

1,085 students served.

“Students don’t get a lot of time to write creatively and express themselves. And especially with these subjects I wanted students to have a writer in the classroom who reflected the material and could provide a perspective that I, as a white person, couldn’t provide.”

—Courtney Palmer, Teacher at Grant High School

“After working with a professional writer, I am able to write like never before... It changed my life.”–Benson High School student

“WITS definitely inspired me to write more on my own and has encouraged me to dig deeper in all parts of writing!”–Madison High School student

The core of the Youth Programs of Literary Arts is Writers in the Schools (WITS) a program of semester-long residencies taught by local professional poets, graphic novelists, and fiction and nonfiction writers who model and share their disciplined creative writing practices with high school students. Each residency is uniquely designed to support, deepen, and extend existing curriculum.

In 2015-16, WITS placed 25 local, professional writers in 43 classrooms at Portland public high schools and alternative programs. These writers worked with 1,101 students who wrote, revised, edited, and performed their own creative writing. This anthology is a showcase of their poems, fiction, creative nonfiction, and comics.

WITS is a program of Literary Arts, a statewide nonprofit organization whose mission is to engage readers, support writers, and inspire the next generation with great literature. For more information about WITS and the other programs of Literary Arts, visit Literary-arts.org or stop by our center at 925 SW Washington.

As the memories poured out into stories

The snowflakes create patterns like galaxies on the ground

Fir trees of green and white-capped waves

Moving along a blue water artery

Thing is a normal color

There are no bodies, just a sea of ever-editing souls

The side that hides from the sun

OUR MISSION IS TO ENGAGE READERS, SUPPORT WRITERS, AND INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION WITH GREAT LITERATURE.
