O Readers often understand the main character better

O Narrator may be unreliable-insane, naïve, deceptive, narrow minded

O Readers see only one perspective which makes the story very limited

3rd Person Limited

O Narrator can see into ONE character’s mind

O All characters have thought privacy except ONE

O Gives the impression that we are very close to the mind of that ONE character, though viewing it from a distance

of all charactersO Godlike narratorO He/she can enter character's minds

and know everything that is going, past, present, and future

O May be a narrator outside the text

O A character struggles with another character.

O Protagonist vs. Antagonist

External ConflictO Man vs. Society

O In this conflict, a character or a group of characters fight against the society in which they live.

O The character fights against social traditions or rules (fight for freedom, rights, for a cause, etc.)

Internal ConflictO Man vs. Self

O The character’s struggle takes place in his/her own mind.

O Usually has something to do with a choice (choosing between right and wrong), or it may have to do with overcoming emotions or mixed feelings.

CharacterizationO Direct: The author tells the reader

about a character (looks and personality)

O Indirect: shows things that reveal the personality of a characterO Ex from MDG:

O Speech – What does the character say? How does the character speak?

O Thoughts – What is revealed through the character’s private thoughts and feelings

O Effects – what is revealed through the character’s effect on other people? How do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character?
