Title: Mechanisms of Evasive Resistance in HCC

Abstract:

Cancer is a major health problem due to the failure of current therapies to effectively eradicate the disease.  Extensive research over decades has led to the development of therapies that target cancer-specific signaling pathways.  However, tumors escape such therapies by activating

compensatory signaling pathways, a process referred to as ‘evasive resistance’.  The identities of the alternative signaling pathways and the functional interconnections that underlie evasive resistance remain widely unknown.  Elucidating mechanisms of evasive resistance is currently a major challenge in cancer research.  We integrate clinical, molecular, and computational sciences to understand the signaling defects that enable tumors to evade therapy.  Within the framework of rigorously designed clinical studies, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissue is isolated before therapy, during treatment, or at the time of tumor progression.  HCC was chosen as the focal cancer based on medical importance, accessibility to repeated sampling, and ethical considerations.  The tumor tissue is obtained by needle biopsy and immediately snap frozen to preserve in vivo tumor properties.  High- and low-throughput experimental and computational methods are then applied to determine, the underlying signaling defects.  This endeavor will elucidate mechanisms of evasive resistance and will ultimately improve cancer diagnosis, treatment and clinical outcome.  Recent progress in this ambitious project will be described.

 

Hall bio:[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner css=”.vc_custom_1473067046100{margin-top: 15px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”5507″][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Michael N. Hall was born (1953) in Puerto Rico and grew up in South America (Venezuela and Peru).  He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Pasteur Institute (Paris, France) and the University of California, San Francisco.  He joined the Biozentrum of the University of Basel (Switzerland) in 1987 where he is currently Professor and former Chair of Biochemistry.  Hall is a pioneer in the fields of TOR signaling and cell growth control.  In 1991, Hall and colleagues discovered TOR (Target of Rapamycin) and subsequently elucidated its role as a central controller of cell growth and metabolism.  TOR is a highly conserved, nutrient- and insulin-activated protein kinase.  The discovery of TOR led to a fundamental change in how one thinks of cell growth.  It is not a spontaneous process that just happens when building blocks (nutrients) are available, but rather a highly regulated, plastic process controlled by TOR-dependent signaling pathways.  As a central controller of cell growth and metabolism, TOR plays a key role in development and aging, and is implicated in disorders such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity.  Hall is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, has received numerous awards, including the Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine (2009), the Marcel Benoist Prize for Sciences or Humanities (2012), the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences (2014), and the Canada Gairdner International Award (2015), and has served on several editorial and scientific advisory boards.  He and his wife Sabine (née Carrère) live in Basel with their daughters Zoé and Léa.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Media representatives will be able to access the Virtual Press Office online where all media materials will be housed. Hard copies of press releases issued by EASL can also be requested from the ILC Press Office.

Press activities may be conducted onsite at the Press Office, available for accredited media representatives.

Computers, laptop connections and printing facilities will be provided in the Press Office for members of the media. Refreshments will also be provided.

Interview rooms will be available for use by the media. These can be booked in advance or onsite via the Press Office staff.

Media representatives wishing to arrange interviews with EASL spokespersons or investigators whose abstracts were selected for presentation at the official ILC Press Conference should check in onsite with ILC Press Office staff.

Press Office staff will be available for the duration of the Congress. Staff will be responsible for badge-checking, the general upkeep of the room, and answering press enquiries. Staff will not be responsible for press related tasks, such as photocopying or secretarial duties.

The International Liver CongressTM 2017 (ILC 2017) is open and free of charge to official representatives of print, broadcast and electronic media.

Journalists interested in attending must register via the online registration platform and upload a copy of their press card and/or the commissioning letter as part of their application.

Freelance journalists must present a commissioning letter on headed paper from a recognised news organisation or publication, outlining their reason for attendance.

You may be asked to provide further evidence of your credentials once your initial registration application is made. If this is the case, a member of the ILC Press Office will contact you to discuss what evidence is required.

To receive a ‘media log-in’ code to access the online registration platform, please sign-up.  We will send you a personalised code enabling you to complete your registration, book accommodation and sign-up to early morning workshops. The ILC Press Office will approve the credentials you will upload during the registration process.

Journalists must register online; applications for media registration made via pharmaceutical, marketing or public relations companies will not be considered.

Press [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]EASL welcomes the interest of the media in matters relating to hepatology and is happy to provide assistance both to journalists who wish to attend The International Liver Congress™ 2017 (ILC 2017), Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and/or use the Virtual Press Office as a media resource in their coverage of hepatology.

The official ILC Press Office is open to registered and accredited media representatives only.

The ILC Press Office will be located within the Rai Congress Center, RAI Amsterdam, Europaplein 22, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Registered media representatives will be notified about the exact location of the ILC Press Office and media rooms available for use.

Media representatives will be able to access the Virtual Press Office online where all media materials will be housed. Hard copies of press releases issued by EASL can also be requested from the ILC Press Office.

Press activities may be conducted onsite at the Press Office, available for accredited media representatives.

Computers, laptop connections and printing facilities will be provided in the Press Office for members of the media. Refreshments will also be provided.

Interview rooms will be available for use by the media. These can be booked in advance or onsite via the Press Office staff.

Media representatives wishing to arrange interviews with EASL spokespersons or investigators whose abstracts were selected for presentation at the official ILC Press Conference should check in onsite with ILC Press Office staff.

Press Office staff will be available for the duration of the Congress. Staff will be responsible for badge-checking, the general upkeep of the room, and answering press enquiries. Staff will not be responsible for press related tasks, such as photocopying or secretarial duties.

Press Release Guidelines [vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Abstracts not included in the official International Liver CongressTM 2017 press conferences” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text]Press releases can be issued after 5 April 2017 at 10:00 CET to coincide with the availability of a large number of abstracts on the ILC 2017 website. Only the information contained in the abstract may be released at this time.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”20px”][vc_custom_heading text=”Abstracts included in the official International Liver CongressTM 2017 press conferences” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left” use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text]Any abstracts selected for official release by EASL (either at the ILC 2017 official Press Conferences or through media alerts) will be made available to media at 07:00 CET on the day the abstract is presented at the Congress and can be reported on from this time. Following a 48-hour review period, the ILC Press Office will notify you if any changes are needed in-line with the guidance outlined below.

Within the first paragraph of your press release please acknowledge that the data are being presented at The International Liver CongressTM 2017.

Press releases must directly relate to meeting abstracts and fully adhere to the ILC 2017 embargo policy.

EASL’s logos including the ILC 2017 logo and/or graphic representations of EASL may not be used without written permission.

The ILC Press Office reserves the right to make judgements and/or decisions about any issues that arise that are not covered in these guidelines.
