BIENVENUE . WELCOME . BENVENUTI

Attention: on parle italien!
CULTURE ET EXPRESSIONS CULTURE AND EXPRESSIONS
Imagine a color changing mosaic carefully arranged on the shelves of local vendors showing a variety of tomatoes, basil and goat cheese. This is the Jean-Talon Market.
Imagine the soft sound of bocce being played on the sand field, the lovers enjoying an outdoor movie night under a pergola and the children eating a pizza or an ice cream on the grass. This is the Dante Park.
Imagine the taste of pasta mixed with sardines and freshly chopped parsley on a Saturday night or a brunch date on a Sunday morning, sitting on a terrace, embra-cing the scent of fine herbs. These are the restaurants of Little Italy.
Imagine enjoying the creamy taste of an espresso while participating in a debate on Italian soccer during Little Italy’s street festivities. This is Vivere Emozione.
This new identity is the synthesis of Little Italy’s neighborhood that does not ima-gine, but lives through the mixture of its multi-generational urban habitat.
The neighborhoods of large cities now enjoy a similar reputation to the major cities that house them. By force of circumstances, the competition and the importance of outstanding become a necessity.
The daily emotions felt in the area since many generations, amplified by the fresh breeze felt in the district is found in the streets and on the Main in Montreal.
Experience the thrill of the neighborhood by following #PetiteItalie and sharing #VivereEmozione.

A presto!
Attention: we speak Italian!
When Montrealers want to breathe a different atmosphere, they come to one of the European districts on the island, being Little Italy. Its pride rooted in Italian culture influences even the most skeptical.
Attention! Little Italy is the only neighborhood where people can listen to three different languages every day, charming features that new residents look for at the Milano grocery store, at Caffè Italia or at Dante Park for an Italian film screening.
Espresso or macchiato? The choice is not easy, but choosing between the three different languages is not obligated here as it facilitates encounters and creates unique situations.
Mangia! Eat! Everyone knows that Italians are always talking about food, one thing that attracts epicureans in the restaurants. A cannolo please, grazie mille! Little Italy has become a true gourmet destination where the most exclusive products can be found in its historical groceries, pastries and largest open-air market. Every taste finds their place here. Pasta or pizza? Which makes for another formidable choice.

Bonne visite!
Taking a walk through the charming streets of Little Italy means living emotions, meeting people, discovering the typical know-how artisans, designers and jewelers or have the look be captured by the art deco architecture of certain buildings. At lunchtime or after a day of work, a picnic in the park is highly recommended. We take the time to relax and have fun with family in the new Shamrock square thanks to the presence of bicycles and the musical carousel. During the summer, socializing with a good coffee or an aperitivo becomes a ritual meeting, taken place on the different terraces.
Attention Little Italy is not Italy, it is the Montreal version of the Italian piazza, but you must live it to understand its vibe.
A presto!

Visiting the neighborhood in a 3 hour walk.
Little Italy is an historic district of Montreal. Each day, several visitors walk through the green alleys in search of the typical and unique emotion of this area on the island of Montreal.
Here are some of our recommendations to explore the neighborhood in just three hours, either on foot or by bicycle.
First stop: the Jean-Talon Market. If you arrive by car, the underground parking is always available. Take the chance to taste fresh products from Québec and let yourself be captured by the richness of the market colors. The expression «tipique d’ici» is often used at the market and if you want to learn what it means in Montreal, conversing with the merchants is highly recommended.
Enjoy the new Shamrock square, where contemporary mixes with the old. Example of urban design with its carousel and musical bikes, the Shamrock site is characterized by typical «art deco» architecture. This road will take you direc-tly to the Main.
Second stop: Via Dante, being the heart of the neighborhood. In the streets, the atmosphere becomes more intimate as you will quickly find this in Dante Park, the relaxation area. A visit inside the Church of Defense Marie is recommended after tasting a cannolo from the oldest local pastry while enjoying the sun on a bench in the Dante park.
The best way to end your walk is by taking St-Zotique street, enjoying the sophisticated charm of its boutiques as you reach the Park of Little Italy, a human crossroad, where people meet for a urban picnic under the shade of the trees, or enjoy a hot chocolate after ice-skating in the winter.
A tip: arrive on an empty stomach!
ORIGINES DE LA PETITE-ITALIE THE ROOTS OF LITTLE ITALY
6
The Italian presence in Quebec dates to the seventeenth century, when Italians served in the Carignan-Salières Regiment.
There were also a few traders and artisans who came mainly from northern Italy. In the nineteenth century, larger scale Italian immigration began to develop. These immigrants were predominantly male farmers from the southern regions. These immigrants, mostly temporary worked in railways, mines and lumber camps. In the early twentieth century, the composition of immigrants began to change. It was then characterized by permanent immigrants and family reunification.
The majority of immigrants worked in the construction and maintenance of railways. Soon they built their own churches and institutions such as the magnifi-cent Church of the Madonna della Difesa.
The largest wave of Italian immigrants arrived with the end of World War II. Between 1946 and 1960, thousands of Italian workers and peasants landed in the Port of Montreal. A large part of them settled around the Jean-Talon market and the Church of Madonna della Difesa, giving birth to Little Italy.
From 1961 to 1975, immigration had diver-sified and was characterized by a high proportion of workers in manufacturing and construction. It was after the 1970s that a sharp decline in immigration from Italy occurred.

This park was founded in 1963 by a group of Italian Montrealers to honor the 50th anniversary of the construction of Madonna della Difesa church. The designs inspiration is Florentine. During the end of the 1980s, the Dante park was renovated and took its actual form.

In the heart of Little Italy, the Jean-Talon Market is one of the oldest public markets in Montréal. When it originally opened in May of 1933, it was named Marché du Nord (north-end market) before becoming the Jean-Talon Market, named in honour of the first Intendant of New France.
This small building was built in 1935 according to plans of the chief architect of Montreal, Donat Beaupré. At that time, this building was used as a center of meat inspection for the Jean-Talon market.
The interest given to the fire station #31 takes roots in its historical and its archi-tectural value. During the Great Depression, this building was used to support the unemployed people. Its architect, Emmanuel-Arthur Doucet, also helped to build many other buildings in Montreal such as the Notre-Dame des Victoires church (1927-1929), the Denise-Pelletier theater (1926-1929) and the fire station #48 (1931). On the otherhand, the architectural value of this building is set by its Art Déco style and by the fact that, unlike other buildings, it has been conser-ved in its original state.

The Casa d’Italia was founded on November 1st 1936. The Italian community rapidly made this building its “home’’ by making it the heart and the center of Little Italy and by organizing all its cultural and social events in this location. The project of Casa d’Italia was entrusted to a young architect born in Brooklyn named Patsy (Pasquale) Colangelo (1907-1984). The Art Déco architectural style of the building was popularized by Ernest Cormier and inspired the making of many other buildings in Montreal such as the Université de Montréal and the Atwater market. In 2010, the Casa d’Italia was transformed in an eco-museum on the Italian immigration in Montreal. This successful transformation awarded the archi-tectural integration prize of the Opération patrimoine architectural de Montréal to the community center of Little Italy and to Saroli-Palumbo architect office.
The old Le Château theater was built in 1931-1932 for the Confederation Amusements Limited, an entertainment enterprise owned by the Lawand and Tabah families. For years, it attracted Montrealers by showing films, music halls and shows. However, after World War II, more and more Montrealers went to live in the suburbs and the Theater was a lot less frequented. In the 1980s, this theater finally closed. The architect behind this building is René Charbonneau. The old theater is one of the most well preserved building in Montreal. It’s archi-tectural style is Art Déco.

The Church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Défense National Historic Site of Canada is located in “Little Italy” in the northwest of Montreal where it is associated with the development of the Italian community. Constructed of stone on a Greek cross plan, the Romanesque Revival style church is finished in the Italian manner with an exterior featuring decorative brickwork and interior fresco decoration. Official recognition refers to the interior and exterior of the building on its footprint. The Church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Défense was designated a national historic site of Canada in 2002 because since its construction in 1918-1919, this church has been closely associated with Canada’s oldest Italian community,

The Notre-Dame-de-la-Défense school was officially founded in 1933. At that time, it also included a residence for Franciscan nuns, a group that was in charge for this school. This building’s architect was Eugène Larose and its style is Art deco.
established in Montreal in the 1860s. The building and its interior decora-tive program, executed in stages, is by artist Guido Nincheri who specifically designed the structure for an Italian Canadian parish. Recalling the Renaissance in Italy, walls and vaults are painted in true fresco. The vault of the apse, exe-cuted in 1927- 1933, displays bright colours and a rich iconography with nume-rous figures, many of which are portraits of contemporary Canadians and Italians. These features make the church a rare and eloquent expression of Canada’s Italian community. This church is also known as Madonna della Difesa by Italians.
The St-Laurent boulevard, The Main, is the pounding heart of the Little Italy’s neighbourhood and represents Montreal’s contemporary and glamourous lifestyle. The Main is a National Historic Site of Canada
