Fourth Sunday of Lent | March 31st, 20193

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK | Very Rev. André-Joseph LaCasse, O.P.

A few weeks ago I wrote about the use of salt in our lives as Catholics. I thought it would be good for our parishioners to read the official prayer that the friars use

when we bless the salt. My thanks to Fr. Henry for providing it here.

Blessing of Salt

The priest, in violet stole and surplice, says:P: Our help is in the name of the Lord.

R: Who made heaven and earth. O salt, creature of God, I exorcise you by the living ✠ God, by the true ✠ God, by the holy ✠ God, by the God who ordered you to be poured into the water by Elisha the prophet, so that its life-giving powers might be restored. I exorcise you so that you may become a means of salvation for believers, that you may bring health of soul and body to all who make use of you, and that you may put to flight and drive away from the places where you are sprinkled; every apparition, villainy, turn of devilish deceit, and every unclean spirit; adjured by him who will come to judge the living and the dead and the world by fire. Amen. Let us pray.Almighty and everlasting God, we humbly implore you, in your immeasurable kindness and love, to bless ✠ this salt which you created and gave to the use of mankind, so that it may become a source of health for the minds and bodies of all who make use of it. May it rid whatever it touches or sprinkles of all uncleanness, and protect it from every assault of evil spirits. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. A blessed Lenten week to all,

Very Rev. André-Joseph LaCasse, O.P.,Pastor/Prior

Cincinnati Right to LifeCincinnati Right to Life is hiring a part-time Office Manager/Small Event Coordinator. Position is 24-28 hours/week and hours are flexible. If you are interested in learning more, please e-mail [email protected] for the full job description.

From March 6th to April 14th our community will unite with many others from coast to coast – and internationally – for a major simultaneous Pro-Life mobilization – the 40 Days for Life campaign. Faithful believers are praying that these efforts will mark the beginning of the end of abortion.

40 Days for Life is a focused Pro-Life campaign with a vision to access God’s power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion.

The mission of the campaign is to bring together the body of Christ in a spirit of unity during a focused 40-day campaign of prayer, fasting, and peaceful activism, with the purpose of repentance, to seek God’s favor to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion.

One of the strengths of 40 Days for Life is its simplicity. The campaign is made up of three key components:• Prayer and fasting: inviting people of faith

throughout our city and across the country to join together for 40 days of fervent prayer and fasting for an end to abortion

• Peaceful Vigil: standing for life through a 40-day peaceful public witness outside the local Planned Parenthood abortion facility, 2314 Auburn Avenue in Cincinnati.

• Community Outreach: taking a positive, upbeat Pro-Life message to every corner of our city through media efforts, church and school outreach, petition drives, and public visibility.

St. Gertrude Church will participate in 40 Days for Life on Thursday, April 4th at Planned Parenthood. The hours are 7:00am to 7:00pm.

Sign up for this will take place after the Sunday Masses, 8:00, 9:30, 11:00, and 12:30, on Sunday, March 31st. Questions? Contact Debbie Graham at (513) 984-4766 or (513) 703-5252.

If you still need more information to help you decide where to get involved beyond St. Gertrude, you may:• Contact Mary Clark at (513) 791-4039/(513) 365-

2606 or [email protected].• Take time to pray and ask God to show you His

plans for your involvement.

St. Faustina’s DiaryToday, during Mass, I saw the Lord Jesus in the midst of His sufferings, as though dying on the cross. He said to me, My daughter, meditate frequently on the sufferings which I have undergone for your sake, and then nothing of what you suffer for Me will seem great to you. You please Me most when you meditate on My Sorrowful Passion. Join your little sufferings to My Sorrowful Passion, so that they may have infinite value before My Majesty (Diary, #1512).

Questions about Mental Illness? Maybe We Can HelpSt. Gertrude Parish Health Ministry will host a Mental Health Resource Table on Sunday, April 7th in the Parish Center after the 8, 9:30 & 11:00am Masses. Mental Health Professionals will be available to provide information, referrals, and to answer general questions about mental health topics.

Volunteer CallSt. Gertrude Pastoral Council and the Office of Pastoral Services has formed a hospitality ministry to provide receptions for various parish events. They would range from lectures to celebrations. We’re looking for a wide range of parishioners who would be interested in helping at all levels, mostly to help serve and set-up/clean up, but sometimes cooking simple dishes or providing other donations or organization. If you’d be interested in knowing more, please contact Cristine Genung or Tish Shefcik at [email protected].

HOLY TEACHING

We Are His SheepA homily by St. Ambrose

The Merciful Judge does not withhold the hope of His forgiveness, and has as a Good Physician made known to you the remedies even against going astray.

And so it was not without design that the holy Luke places in order before us three parables:

– that of the sheep that strayed and was found,– that of the silver piece that was lost and also was found,– that of the son who was dead (through sin) and who returned to life;

so that sustained by this threefold cure we may seek to cure our own wounds: for a triple rope does not break.

Who are these three persons: the shepherd, the woman, the father? Is not Christ the Shepherd, the Church the woman, and God the Father?

Christ Who took upon Himself your sins bears you upon His own Body; the Church searches for you; the Father receives you back.

As a shepherd He brings us back, as a mother He looks for us, as a father He clothes us.

First, mercy, second, intercession, third, reconciliation; each to each; the Redeemer comes to our aid, the Church intercedes for us, the Creator restores us to Himself. It is the same divine mercy in each operation; but grace varies according to our merits.

The sheep that strayed is brought back by the Shepherd. The silver piece that was lost is found. The son turns back fully repentant from his sinful wanderings, and retraces his footsteps to his father.

Let us therefore rejoice because that sheep which had fallen by the way in Adam is uplifted in Christ…; the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost (Luke 19:10); that is, all men: for as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all shall be made alive (1 Cor. 15:22).

Rich then is that Shepherd of whose portion all we are but a hundredth part. For He has besides the innumerable flocks of the Archangels, of the Dominations, of the Powers, of the Thrones and all the rest whom He left upon the mountains.

Neither is it without significance that the woman rejoices because of the silver piece that was found. For this is no ordinary piece of silver, upon which is the figure of the Prince. And because of this, the Image of the King is the wealth of the Church.

We are His sheep; let us pray that He will place us amid the waters of His refreshment (Ps. 22:2). We are, I say, His sheep; let us seek of Him a place of pasture.

We are pieces of silver; let us jealously cherish our value.

We are children; let us hasten to our Father.

DEACONS: Ministers of Service – The Communion Rite and Concluding Rite (part 10 of 10)During the sign of peace, it is the deacon’s role to invite all present to exchange a sign of peace. As an ordinary minister of Communion, during the singing of the Lamb of God, the deacon assists the priest in preparing the vessels for the Communion of the faithful by pouring the Precious Blood into Communion cups and breaking and distributing consecrated Hosts into Communion plates. Receiving Communion from the priest, deacons may then help minister the Eucharist to the extraordinary ministers and hand the extraordinary ministers their vessels to minister the Eucharist to the people. During the Communion procession, the deacon normally ministers the Blood of Christ to the communicants. After Communion, the deacon may repose any Hosts remaining in the tabernacle. At the end of Mass, the deacon (or another minister) may make brief announcements to the people. If there is a solemn blessing or prayer over the people, the deacon invites all to “Bow your heads and pray for God’s blessing.” After the blessing, the deacon dismisses the people. He then kisses the altar with the priest, makes the appropriate reverence, and walks to the right of the priest in the closing procession.
