TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Frequent fliers today have many ways to accrue air miles, so one doesn’t always have to endure long hours in cramped seats to earn free hours in cramped seats. In St. Paul’s day, there were no such perks, nor would there have been any legal system for him to protest the shipwrecks he endured. He had other rewards in mind. The churches that he established in the catalogue of cities from today’s first reading must have been very different from one another. Language, culture, customs, religious history, obstacles to community, social challenges, the places where they met, their clothing, their bread and wine, all distinct, particular to the area. There were social customs as well: in a Christian household, the only place where a slave would be able to stand legally as an equal with the master would be at the table of the Lord, because at that table a new world of reconciliation was imaged. While Paul revered local customs, he was relentless about challenging the ways that people lived their Christian lives and how their worship reflected them. It is much the same today, as a global Catholic Church seeks to respect local customs and culture, allowing for differences in many things, yet always giving expression to the underlying presence of Christ, who binds us all together into his body. —James Field, Copyright © J. Fifth Sunday of Easter Page 3

This weekend, we will participate in an important Follow-Up Parish Appeal for Catholic Charities. This is not a special

collection; rather it is a chance for all Catholics to make a commitment to Walk in Faith and Give in Joy by sharing the gifts which God has given you. Funds raised through this effort will be invested in improving the camp experience for campers with disabilities through camperships to help reduce the financial burden, programs and activities for campers with special needs, and cabin renovation to make them accessible to all. With your help, Catholic Charites will be able to support more campers with disabilities and enhance their experience once they arrive at Camp Christopher and find God in nature. DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT! All new, increased and additional gifts returned in the In-Pew Envelopes this weekend, donated online at www.CatholicCommunity.org/Camp or by texting CAMP to 41444 will be matched up to $100,000. We hope you see the benefits that camp can have on those with special needs. Prayerfully consider the impact you can have on all who attend Camp Christopher, and please give as generously as possible. Contact Karen Joyce at 216-696-6525 x 1910. Thank you for making a difference. SUNDAY GOSPEL: John 13:31-33a,34-35 Jesus prefaces this new commandment to his disciples, “I will be with you only a little while longer.” Speaking at the Last Supper, Jesus prepares his disciples for what is to come. Soon Jesus will not be with them in the tangible way they

are used to. They will no longer be able to walk with him in person or to ask him their questions and hear an answer with their ears. They are moving into a new time of discipleship, a time that will require more from them. In this time to come they are to love one another as Jesus has loved them. And soon, Jesus will show them just what that love looks like when he lays down his life. – Living Liturgy 2019 LEADERSHIP MEETING: Thursday, June 13th at 7:00pm. The Leadership Council consists of the head of every ministry or organization in the parish. We meet twice a year to facilitate communication among the ministries and organizations and to look at ways of furthering the parish mission in the various groups. At this June meeting we will be finalizing the parish calendar for the year. Among many things happening this coming year the 10th anniversary of the dedication of the church building is on the top of the events this year. The head of every organization or ministry (or a representative) must be in attendance at this meeting to have their events included in the parish activities for the year. GARDENING Kind hearts are the garden, Kind thoughts are the root, Kind words are the blossoms, Kind deeds are the fruit. —Anonymous

PASTOR’S CORNER: Poet and author Maya Angelou said: “This is a wonderful day. I have never seen it before.” I can imagine using this quote to give thanks to God for the day. Each day, God showers blessings upon us. Each day, there are new marvels to discover. Each day, there is a lesson to be learned to prepare us for life eternal. And each day, we are being used by God as his instrument to bring his love to someone. In the gospel this weekend we hear Jesus say: “I give you a new commandment: love one another… This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love

for one another.” As each day is set before us, we are commanded to do the loving thing. It sounds simple enough until we have to make it concrete by loving each person we encounter. All the more reason we need the Eucharist to fortify us to love as Jesus loved. This weekend, the funds collected through the Catholic Charities Follow-Up Appeal, will be invested at Camp Christopher to create a camp without limits for campers with disabilities to experience God in nature. We have been asked to be one of four parishes in the diocese to introduce Mobile Giving as a way to donate to this great cause. To donate you can either fill out a pledge form in the pew or text the word CAMP to 41444. And speaking of programs for people with special needs, I have just applied to host the Tim Tebow Night to Shine which will be on Friday, February 7th. If chosen, this would be our second year of hosting a prom night experience for those with special needs. It was so much fun for guests and volunteers that we hope to make it a yearly event.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER: Seeing God in those around us is an important part of stewardship. God puts people into our path all the time. Maybe we need them, or they need us. However, we do not walk through this world alone. If we choose to not be mindful of who is in our midst, we miss the chance to receive whatever gifts they may have to give. In addition, they miss out on the gifts we have to share with them if we stay closed and quiet. Pay attention to those around you. God may come to you in the words of a friend, the request of a homeless man, or in the wisdom of a complete stranger. How will God use you this week to share God's love with others? O V E R N I G H T R E T R E A T F O R WOMEN: Retreats are an opportunity to grow spiritually and in community with others. Beginning on Saturday morning, June 29th and concluding on Sunday, June 30th before noon, our Women of Faith group is planning an overnight retreat at our parish. There will be an option to attend the retreat but not stay overnight in the parish hall. The theme is "Come to Me." If you are interested in attending the retreat or if you have any questions, please contact Grace Ogonek at [email protected] or leave a message at the parish office. CORRECTION: Leslie Bubb’s name was mistakenly omitted in the bulletin last weekend for teachers aides. Thanks Leslie. CATHOLIC RENEWAL MINISTRIES: will host a Pentecost Mass Celebration, Sunday, June 9th, at St. Peter Church, 35777 Center Ridge Rd., North Ridgeville 44039. The celebration will start at 2:00 p.m. with praise and worship. Fr. Bob Franco will be the celebrant. After Mass, there will be an opportunity for individual prayer for healing, and there will also be fellowship time. For more information, please contact Fr. Bob Franco at 440-327-2201 or CRM at 440-944-9445. All are invited to celebrate Pentecost as a community and join in as we pray, in power, for a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit. PARISH SCHOLARSHIP: Thank you for your generous donations to the Parish Scholarship Fund. The collection taken the 1st weekend of May brought in $1,529 to be used to grant a graduating High School student and a current college student who have been actively living their faith in the parish or in their college community a $500 OLQP scholarship.

MEN’S FAITH SHARING: All men are invited to a time of prayer and reflection on Sunday, May 19th at 6:00pm in the parish hall. This informal gathering is an opportunity to grow in our faith as well as experience support from other men of faith. The topic will be on the Eucharist and how we can make our gathering for the Eucharist more meaningful. FREE CATHOLIC RESOURCES on FORMED: Have you explored FORMED? Discover a variety of Catholic content in one place. Entertaining movies, programs, talks, audio dramas, and ebooks—just a click away. Simply go to olqpgrafton.formed.org, select "Register Now" and create your account. Once on the FORMED page, select the COMMUNITY link to easily access recommended topics. If you have any questions, please contact Grace Ogonek at [email protected]. JOYFUL HEARTS: As our Hearts have turned to joy this Easter, we can continue to show Christ’s love to others through “Joyful Hearts”. In the welcome area will be a display of paper hearts, each heart will have an item for you to donate. If you wish to participate please take a heart, buy the item and return it to the chest. This will continue through the Easter season until Pentecost. Items purchased will support programs that the Helping Hands Ministry run, along with programs that other church organizations support. The Helping Hands Ministry runs a food pantry that provides to 30 families a month, the Back Pack Club that provides weekend food for 200 Midview students, a Community Meal, monetary assistance and other programs. 2020 MASSES: Masses Intentions for 2020 can now be requested. Due to the large number of requests for mass intentions, we need to limit each parishioner to 8 total mass intentions for the year (this includes 4 weekend masses). To schedule Mass Intentions contact the office at 440-926-2364, email us at: [email protected] or submit online at olqpgrafton.org/mass-times.
