The Year of Saint Mark
3rd Sunday in Year (Sunday Readings: of year B: Breviary: Week iii) 21.01.18.
Scripture : Jonah 3: 1 – 5, 10.
Psalm 24
R/ Lord, make me know your ways.
Lord, make me know your ways.
Lord, teach me your paths.
Make me walk in your truth, and teach me:
for you are God my saviour.
Remember your mercy, Lord,
And the love you have shown from of old.
In your love remember me,
because of your goodness, O Lord.
The Lord is good and upright.
He shows the path to those who stray,
He guides the humble in the right path;
He teaches his way to the poor.
1 Corinthians 7: 29 – 31.
Alleluia Acc: The kingdom of God is close at hand;
believe the Good News.
Mark 1: 14 – 20.
Response: Lord graciously, hear us.
Pray at all times …. Let us aid each other with our
prayers
Whilst this theme is not related to today’s readings, I write
with intent. Prayer is a powerful force at our
disposal. Jesus taught that through prayer you can ask for
every gift, whether it be for the gifts of the Holy Spirit or for
the daily bread you need. Our prayers storm heaven to win
untold graces, blessings and favours for ourselves, for others
and the whole human race. So, imagine what can happen if
we combine our prayers?
So many people ask us, the priests for prayers, but prayer is
the work of all God’s people. Therefore, we are going to
start a ‘Prayer Tree’ within our parish. The concept is
simple – when someone submits a prayer request, the prayer
tree co-ordinator acts as a root, not only praying for the
intention, but passing it up the tree. Submitting a prayer
request is easy either contact the parish office, complete the
online form or email [email protected].
Requests can be specific or as general as “a Special
Intention”.
To join the tree and pray for intentions, either submit your
details to the parish office or
email [email protected]. You can choose to
join the email or telephone tree. By joining the email tree,
you will be added to a group that gets sent a list of prayer
requests as they come in. Just PRAY for those requests! As
a member of the telephone tree you will receive a telephone
call from a nominated member of the tree. PRAY for the
requests and pass them on to the next person in the tree.
It’s that simple!
Heralds of the Gospel We are all called to be heralds of the Gospel, to proclaim the
Good News of Jesus Christ to all who we meet. In the
celebration of Mass, this takes on a whole new meaning.
During the celebration of Mass, we gather to listen attentively
to God’s Word. The ministry of the Word is proclaimed in
different ways throughout the celebration of Mass, by different
people. The deacon or the priest proclaims the Gospel; he
speaks the very words of Our Lord Himself. The other
readings are proclaimed by others from the community.
This is an important parish ministry. The Heralds of the
Gospel day for has been arranged for those who already
exercise the ministry of reader within the parish, or for those
who would like to consider finding out more information about
this ministry. The day will take place on Saturday, 24th
February 2018 from 10am to 3pm at St. David Lewis
Church, Newport. There is a sign-up sheet at the back of the
Church for those who would like to attend the day.

CHRISTMAS ENDS WITH CANDLEMAS 2
nd FEBRUARY 2018
Whilst Christmastide came to an end on Monday
with the Baptism of the Lord, it is tradition in
most Christian countries to keep the nativity up
until Christ comes into his Temple at Candlemas.
Candlemas is the Feast of the Presentation of the
Child Jesus at the Temple (Friday 2nd
February
2018). As prescribed in Jewish Law, Mary and
Joseph brought the infant child to the Temple for
consecration to God and what would be the
purification of the parents. During the event
Simeon and Anna make their pronouncements
about the child. Simeon said that he is “the light
to enlighten the Gentiles”, so it is another
tradition on this day to bless candles at the start
of Mass.
It is our intention to order special candles with a
beautiful image of Our Lady in blue and gold for
people to take home. They are the standard size
of dining room candles and cost £2.50 each. If
you would like to order candles there will be
someone at the back of church this weekend to
take orders and payments, or call in at the Parish
Office between 9.00-3.00 Monday to Friday.

Francis de Sales - Patron of Catholic writers, the Catholic press,
the deaf, journalists, adult education was born August 21st
1567 and died December 28
th 1622, he was beatified in 1661 by Pope
Alexander VII, who then canonized him four years later. He was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius IX in 1877. The Roman Catholic Church celebrates St. Francis de Sales' feast on 24 January He believed the key to love of God was prayer.
"By turning your eyes on God in meditation, your whole soul will be filled with God. Begin all your prayers in the presence of God."
For busy people living in the world, he advised, "Retire at various times into the solitude of your own heart, even while outwardly engaged in discussions or transactions with others and talk to God."
The test of prayer was a person's actions.
"To be an angel in prayer and a beast in one's relations with people is to go lame on both legs."
He believed the worst sin was to judge someone or to gossip about them. Even if we say we do it out of love we're still doing it to look better ourselves. We should be as gentle and forgiving with ourselves as we should be with others.
Do not wish to be
anything but what you
are, and try to be that
perfectly. Saint Francis de Sales.
