The Year of Saint Matthew
33rd Sunday in the Year WORLD DAY OF THE POOR
(Sunday Readings: of year A : Breviary: Week i) 19.11.17.
THIS SUNDAY’S MASS :
Scripture: Proverbs 31: 10-13, 19-20, 30-31.
Psalm 127
R/. Blessed are those that fear the Lord..
Blessed are those that fear the Lord
and walk in his ways.
By the labour of your hands you shall eat.
You will be happy and prosper.
Your wife like a fruitful vine
in the heart of your house;
your children like shoots of the olive,
around your table.
Indeed thus shall be blessed
the man who fears the Lord.
May the Lord bless you from Zion /
in a happy Jerusalem
all the days of your life.
1 Thessalonians 5: 1 – 6.
Matthew 25: 14 – 30. Intercession : Lord God in Heaven
Response : Have mercy on us all, your servants on earth
During the Month of November we can remember
our deceased relatives and friends by saying daily the
Prayer for the Holy Souls.
Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord, Lord, hear my voice!
O let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleading.
If you, O Lord, should mark our guilt,
Lord, who would survive?
But with you is found forgiveness: for this we revere you.
My soul is waiting for the Lord. I count on his word.
My soul is longing for the Lord more than watchman for daybreak.
Let the watchman count on daybreak and Israel on the Lord.
Because with the Lord there is mercy
and fullness of redemption,
Israel indeed he will redeem from all its iniquity.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.
And let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace. Amen.
May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful
departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.
‘Times and seasons’
We find ourselves at the Thirty-third Sunday of Ordinary
Time, making our way ever closer to the end of the
church’s liturgical year. In this time of transition, from the
old to the new, we notice that the tone of the readings has
changed. We begin to think about those end times, or
of ‘the Day of the Lord’, as St. Paul puts it in the second
reading. The readings prompt us to prepare our hearts for
the hope that the new liturgical year will bring.
Coming to the end of the year, whether it’s the church’s
year or this calendar year, we have the opportunity to
reflect back and give thanks to Almighty God for the
graces and blessings that he has bestowed upon us. We are
a people called to ‘lift up your hearts’ in thanksgiving. If
we are not careful, showing our gratitude for these
blessings can be so easily overlooked by our own ‘wants’.
This is not what living our life in Christ means.
The end of the church’s year is also an opportunity for us
to make our new year’s commitments; those resolutions
which will enable us to refocus our gaze on the Lord.
Making our new liturgical year’s resolutions are a
personal undertaking. By having grateful hearts, and
thanking God for all the blessings that He’s given to us,
we become mindful of those times when we have fallen
short, and we strive to begin afresh. The Gospel reminds
us this weekend that we are given talents; gifts and talents
which are all very different, yet which complement each
other, as we all strive to build up the Body of Christ. The
Lord is prompting us to use these gifts and talents wisely
for the building up of the Kingdom here on earth.
The Lord has entrusted us with talents. As we enter the
final weeks of the church’s liturgical year, Jesus is
summoning us, and entrusting us with talents. How will
we use these talents?
