Bishop Andriy Rabiy’s Remarks in English at his Episcopal Ordination on September 3, 2017 at St. George’s Ukrainian

Catholic Cathedral in Lviv, Ukraine.

Today we have a very auspicious occasion in this beautiful Cathedral of St. George in Lviv to witness not only the opening ceremony for the Synod of Ukrainian Catholic Bishops which usually happens around this time; but also you all have seen and witnessed another beautiful event, an episcopal consecration -- how a priest is being made a bishop, a leader in the Church. Being a bishop is an exciting, yet huge ministry in the Church. Yet a bishop always works with God and through God. Again, let’s always remember there is nothing possible in God and with God all things are possible. This is why my prayer and my intention is actually to rely on the will of God, on His power, and His providence to help me to lead the people that will be entrusted into my care, to do my very best in whatever I possibly can. And please keep in mind that whatever you witnessed today did not happen by chance, not at all. It actually took a long time, hard work,

a lot of prayers. And, also, if it wasn’t for the help, the support and especially the prayers of many of you, the faithful from the Archeparchy of Philadelphia, or around the world for that matter, I would not be standing here in the midst and addressing you at this very moment. And I want to say -- I THANK YOU. When I came to the United States, you all embraced me, you all supported me in every way. And God only knows how much I appreciate that! Being a kid in a foreign country, it’s not that easy, but you made it so easy for me at that time. I also want to thank all the priests of our Archeparchy for supporting me all the time, especially by prayer in the last few weeks. I would like to thank our own Archbishop Stefan (Soroka) for being here, for being my consecrator, but more importantly for being my mentor and my spiritual father for the last 16 years. I appreciate and value it very much. I would also like to thank

Bishop David (Motiuk) of the Eparchy of Edmonton for being present here, for agreeing to be my third consecrator. We are going to have the presentation Liturgy at our beautiful Cathedral in Philadelphia on September 24, 2017 at 3:00 in the afternoon and I would like to invite all of you to come in prayer together and not only to see me as a bishop there but also to celebrate us as the church. The church which is alive, the church which actually strives and wants to be better in holiness, better in closeness to the Lord and this is what it is all about. Our churches, especially abroad, are open to everyone. They are

not only open to recent immigrants, they are not only open to the people who are already second, third, fourth generation born there as well. We also have many people in our parishes that have nothing to do with Ukrainian at all. Yet they have come to love our Liturgy, they came to love our Church. Our church is, will be, and should be open to everyone. This is one of the things we are going to pursue with Archbishop Stefan. Vladyko, I am looking forward to working with you and whatever I can be of help and of use; I will be there. I would like to thank all of you for watching and being here with us. May God Bless you! Amen

THE PROTECTION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD

The Church celebrates the Feast of the Protection of the Mother of God on October 1st. Through this feast we celebrate the appearance of the Mother of God in Constantinople in the tenth century. The account of this appearance is found in the life of St. Andrew, known as the Fool for Christ. During services in the Church of Blachernes, St. Andrew and his disciple, St. Epiphanius, saw the Mother of God approach the ambo. She was supported by St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, and accompanied by many Saints. Here She knelt in prayer, Her face bathed in tears. After praying again at the altar, She took Her veil and extended it over the people as a sign of Her protection.

On the Icon, the Mother of God is seen standing above the faithful. Her arms, outstretched in prayer, are draped with a veil. Angels are pictured on both sides. St. Andrew and St. Epiphanius are shown on the lower right of our Icon. St. Andrew, dressed only in a cloak, gestures toward the Mother of God. St. Epiphanius, wearing a tunic under his cloak, gestures in astonishment at the miraculous appearance.

In the center of the Church, a young man with a halo, clothed in a deacon’s sticharion, is holding in his left hand an open scroll with the text of the Christmas Kontakion in honor of the Mother of God. He is St. Romanos the Melodist, the famous hymnographer whose feast is also celebrated on October 1st.

There are many variations of the icon of this event. In some icons of this mystery, the Virign is shown alone without any of the other figures associated with the original vision. This highlights the truth that the Mother of God is the “Never-failing Protectress” of all Christians, our ever-present Advocate with the Creator. This Icon tells us that we are not alone. We live in the presence of the Mother of God. She is our Protectress.

TROPARION — Protected by Your coming, O Mother of God, well-believing people solemnly celebrate today; and gazing upon Your immaculate image, they humbly say: “Watch over us with Your noble protection and deliver us from all evil by asking Your Son, Christ our God, to save our souls.”

INTERCESSION OF THE THEOTOKOS

Intercession to theTheotokos is often prayed for by devout Ukrainian Greek Catholic faithful. They seek Her protection and intercession before Her Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. Special prayer services (akathist, moleben et al.) to the Mother of God are celebrated in honor of the Theotokos. In Ukraine October 14th (Julian calendar) is also known as Ukrainian Kozak Day, for the kozaks went to battle with the banner of the Holy Protector, the Mother of God. His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk also asked for prayers for all those serving in defense of Ukraine – that they be protected by the holy mantle (omophor, protecting veil) of Mary, the Mother of God.

Catechetical Sunday at the Cathedral - September 17, 2017On September 17, 2017 Catechetical Sunday was observed at the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Philadelphia. Towards the conclusion of both the 9 AM and 11 AM Divine Liturgies, Fr. Roman Pitula gathered the children by the tetrapod, prayed and blessed the students and their teachers the Missionary Sisters of the Mother of God.

On Catechetical Sunday we celebrate an important event in our parish life as we seek to grow in “Communion with God” by beginning our new catechetical year. In a special way on Catechetical Sunday we ask God to grant to His servants, our students, our teachers, and ourselves the grace to grow in our communion with Him.

During the prayer, Fr. Pitula said, “Open the hearts, the minds, and the lips of these students. Enable them to receive the power of Your law, and to comprehend the useful things which will be taught them. Help them understand Your perfect will and contribute to the building up of Your holy Church. Deliver them from every snare of the enemy, preserve them in true faith, and in righteousness and purity all the days of their lives. May they grow in wisdom and in the observance of Your commandments. May they be revealed as worshippers of Your name and heirs of Your kingdom.”

Welcome Back To ACS’s 54th YearOf Educating Children In The Catholic Faith.

The vision of the Ukrainian Catholic Bishops over a half century ago led to the establishment of Assumption Catholic School in Perth Amboy NJ that currently is the largest elementary Ukrainian Catholic School in America. Over the years, thousands of students have called the school their second home and with their parents, created many positive memories. Among the many gratifying moments is when alumni return to register their own children to give them the Assumption Catholic experience.

On September 6, 2017 for the 54th time the ACS welcomed back returning and many new students. Students were welcomed by their teachers and

a new principal Mrs. Lissette Shumny, who started her first year as ACS principal. An energy of excitement and anticipation buzzed on the school grounds as the students, fresh-faced in their crisp uniforms reunited with friends and shook off any lingering first-day jitters. ACS IS SO proud and excited to launch the 2017-2018 school year with our incredibly talented and dedicated teaching staff and ongoing support and partnership of Assumption parish. ACS is a small parochial school administered by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Metuchen, the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia and the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. AdvancEd accredited, the school provides a Christ-centered, Catholic environment to a diverse population of pre-kindergarten (age

4) through 8thgrade students. Before Care and After Care are available.

MOLEBEN AND MEETING OF LUC’s NORTH ANTHRACITE COUNCIL

On Sunday afternoon, September 17, 2017, a beautiful Moleben to Jesus Christ, Lover of Mankind was served at St. Vladimir Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Edwardsville, PA. The pastor, Father Paul Wolensky, and his parishioners invited members of the North Anthracite Council of the League of Ukrainian Catholics to conduct their regular meeting afterwards in the parish community room. As it was the Sunday After the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, veneration and choral homage was also paid to the flower decorated cross resting on the tetrapod.

Following the Moleben, LUC members reviewed progress made in preparation for the upcoming North Anthracite Council hosted LUC Convention set for October 6, 7 and 8, 2017 to be held at the Genetti Best Western Hotel and Conference Center in Wilkes-Barre and at SS. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Plymouth, PA. All indications are that the Convention will be a productive one. A delightful buffet closed out the late afternoon events.

Twenty-five years ago . . . The historic week in L’viv

The recent ceremonies and pageantry of the consecration of the Most Reverend Andriy Rabiy to the episcopacy on September 3 at Saint George’s Cathedral in L’viv were marvelous to behold. The streaming of all the liturgical services was easily available through the website of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ukraine (ugcc.ua) and the many photographs that were posted on different Facebook entries.

Watching the live streaming of these events brought back pleasant memories of historic events that took place in L’viv during the week of August 23-29, 1992, i.e. twenty-five years ago. I, a priest of the Stamford Eparchy, had just finished my first year of service as the Vice-Rector of Academic Studies for the newly-resurrected Holy Spirit Ukrainian Greek Catholic Seminary of L’viv in the district of Rudno. Then came the summer when my time was filled with admission screenings for the Seminary and ordination ceremonies to the diaconate and priesthood for a number of my students. The summer flew by and then came the last week of August and its historic events. As an eyewitness to these events, I still clearly recall their historic significance. I offer to share these personal accounts with

your readers. August 23 was the jubilee celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) in Saint George Cathedral in Lviv. It was the first time that veterans of this famed resistance movement in Ukraine were gathering from different continents of the world. Easily recognized by their veteran berets, I witnessed the formation of their military ranks as they prepared to solemnly march into the Cathedral. I was thrilled to recognize a number of veterans from my hometown of Yonkers, New York, marching in the parade. I concelebrated the Divine Liturgy which was led by Cardinal Miroslav Lubachivsky that day. A stirring homily was delivered by the Reverend Mitrat Ivan Hryniukh of Munich, Germany, a famed UPA chaplain and brother of Msgr. Stephen Hrynuk of Olyphant, Pennsylvania. What a glory it was that day to see rows of patriotic Ukrainian flags lining the streets of central L’viv in a free and sovereign Ukraine.

On the next day, August 24, one hundred thousand people witnessed the unveiling of the new Taras Shevchenko Monument on the central square of downtown Lviv. The day began with a noon Akafist service in the front of the

Lviv Opera House that was celebrated by Cardinal Lubachivsky and other religious leaders. The responses to the outdoors service were sung by the noted boys’ chorus Dudaryk. Even though a light rain was falling, the formation of a solemn route from the Opera House to the middle of the square went smoothly. Scored of wreaths were presented that day from various organizations and communities. I found myself marching close to the presence of Cardinal Lubachivsky as the procession approached

August 26, Lviv got ready for the grandest of events – the historic return from exile of the earthly remains of Patriarch Iosyf cardinal Slipyi from Rome to Lviv, the archepiscopal see from which he was arrested and imprisoned by the Communist rule of Ukraine in April, 1945. I was fortunate enough due to my Seminary position to be admitted unto the grounds of Lviv Airport, joining a select number of religious and civic leaders who were waiting for the arrival of the plane from Rome. Among the distinguished group were Cardinal Lubachivsky, Archbishop Volodymyr Sterniuk and all our hierarchy ; community leaders like Stefan Davymuka, Bohdan Horyn, Ihor and Iryna Kalynets’, Stefania Shabatura and others ; and a wonderful surprise guest in a wheelchair: His Beatitude Patriarch Mystyslav (Skrypnyk) from Kyiv. Priests carried the glass-encased coffin from the plane to a spot, where the first portion of the day’s program took place. The motorcade took off from the airport to central Lviv – the streets were lines with crowds greeting the return of this Church leader to his home. The motorcade arrived at Holy Transfiguration Church. The body of Cardinal Slipyi was carried into the Church and greeted by some two

hundred priests dressed in funeral vestments. Following a panakhyda service, the procession route through the winding streets of downtown Lviv took shape with the following stops along the way: The Ploshcha Rynok (The City Square), the Ivan Franko National University, the Markiian Shashkevych Monument (the site of the old Lviv Seminary and Theological Seminary), up the hill to the city prison where the Cardinal was confined on April 11, 1945, and then to Saint George Cathedral. Thousands walked the same route that day in deep respect of this Confessor of faith and Primate of our Church. The day ended with his body being placed in the nave of his Cathedral Church to lay in state until its solemn interment in the Cathedral Crypt on August 29th. August 28 witnessed another anniversary in the history of our Church. I travelled with a delegation from our Seminary to the village of Zhuzhl in the Sokal’ region of L’viv Province. It was the solemn holyday of the Holy Dormition of the Mother of God on the Julian calendar. It was a day earmarked for the celebration of the centennial of the founding of the Congregation of the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate. The

ceremonies this day were led by the Apostolic Nuncio to Ukraine, the Most Reverend Archbishop Antonio Franco. Amidst the crowd there that day, I was happy to meet with Sisters Thomas Hrynkiw, Zenovia Chmilar, and Michelle Yakymovitch, representatives from our American Province centered in Sloatsburg, New York. August 29 was the last and most remarkable day of this week in 1992. The President of Ukraine, Leonid Krawchuk, travelled to Saint George Cathedral that day to represent the government and people of Ukraine at the internment of Patriarch Iosyf’s coffin into the Cathedral crypt. Because of the security risks attached to the office of President and other political dignitaries, only three hundred people were actually allowed into the Cathedral with thousand milling in the courtyard. I was lucky enough to be one of those who received an admission ticket for this day. Outside of the Cathedral, I met Very Reverend Patrick Paschak, OSBM, and Reverend Mitrat Matthew Berko, our Eparchy’s delegates for the occasion. The Divine Liturgy and final farewell ceremony was televised throughout Ukraine that day. In the evening, a commemorative Concert

in honor of the day’s event was held in the Grand Opera House of Lviv. Sitting in the loge side by side were Myroslav Ivan Cardinal Lubachivsky, President Leonid Kravchuk of Ukraine, and His Beatitude, Patriarch Mystyslav of Kyiv. What a grand finish to the day’s event. An additional historic note was that original plans were to lay the Patriarch’s coffin in the Cathedral Crypt on August 29. Due to the myriads of faithful who desired to pay their respects to this persecuted hero throughout the time starting on August 26, the final resting ceremonies did not take place unto September 7, the eighth anniversary of his death in Rome. It was estimated that over a million people filed past the funeral bier of Patriarch Iosyf Slipyi. What a week! What a time! It definitely was six days in August 1992 that I will never forget!

Bishops of the Synod commemorated Patriarch Josyph Slipyj in St. George’s Cathedral

Friday, 08 September 2017

On September 7th, on the day of the death of Patriarch Josyph Slipyj, the Bishops of the UGCC Synod prayed a Panakhyda in the crypt of St. George’s Cathedral. The service was led by the Father and Head of the UGCC His Beatitude Sviatoslav.

After the prayer, in the cathedral an artistic program "I am choosing faith..." was held, devoted to the 125th anniversary of the birth of the Patriarch Josyph Slipyj and the 25-th anniversary of his reburial.

At the beginning of the solemn academia, Oleh Syniutka, the Head of Lviv's oblast state administration, read the letter from the President of Ukraine on this occasion. "This year we commemorate the figure of your great church history and the history of the Ukrainian nation in general - the Major Archbishop of the UGCC Patriarch Josyph Slipyj, who belongs to the world level personalities," writes the President.

According to him, the Patriarch Josyph was a great spiritual leader

with intellectual way of thinking, strategist, ecumenist, one of the founder of the modern UGCC, which became a bridge between the Western and Eastern Churches. "Reading into his life story, evidence, "Testament", one becomes a witness of great spiritual strength and boundless faith of someone who chose as the aim of his life serving God and Ukraine, work for the purpose of uniting Ukrainians in the world, struggle for the patriarchate of the Ukrainian Church as a sign of self-sufficiency of the nation, well-fare for our independence," notes Petro Poroshenko.

"He bequeathed to all of us: 'Pray, work and fight

for saving of the Christian soul of every Ukrainian and for the whole Ukrainian nation, ask the Almighty God to help us accomplish our striving for the unity and our struggle for the clerical union in establishment of the Patriarchate of the Ukrainian Church!' Today it's especially important to affirm this unity in the defense of our boundaries, in the Christian unity, in building-up Ukraine as a powerful European state. With deep reverence we bow our heads before the memory of Josyph Slipyj. He is an example for imitation and a source of inspiration," sums up the President in his message .

We would like to add that

the artistic program is a joint project of the Center for Studies of Patriarch Josyph Slipyj's heritage, Lviv's Archeparchy of the UGCC and the Foundation "Andrej". Especially for this event the famous Lviv composer Myroslav Volynsky wrote two musical pieces.

Patriarchal pilgrimage held in Goshiv

11 September 2017

The dismissal service in the Basilian Goshiv Monastery gathered on September 10th thousands of pilgrims. Bishops of the UGCC arrived for the dismissal service from parishes from west to east of Ukraine, far abroad - America, Australia, Argentina, Brazil, USA, Canada, Italy in Yasnaya Gora. They are so numerous because these days the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC convenes in Lviv.

According to the correspondent of RISU Natalia Paliy, during two days, September 9th and 10th, the pilgrims in Goshiv were participating in the common worship, prayer service, and night vigils.

“We have practiced various pilgrimages since last year, and now we have the culmination of those celebrations in Ukraine,” Patriarch Sviatoslav, head of the UGCC, stressed. “Celebrating the 150th anniversary of the canonization of the Holy Josaphat Kuntsevich in the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome, we were also celebrating the jubilee of the Basilian order

in Krekhov, Dobromyl and other monasteries. Today I especially want to congratulate fathers and brothers on the anniversary. We thank the Lord God that He blesses our church with a good calling to the monastic living and for the fact that you are chosen, and not just those called. Today, we feel that your reformer, my great predecessor, Metropolitan of Kyiv Josyf-Veliamin Rutskyy, was thinking about the renewal of monasticism in our entire Church. Perhaps, you face a great difficult task today. I want to turn to the young girls and boys who are looking for their way in life – we, the church, need you, our people. Today, I want to fulfill the task of the servant who calls – serve God and the church in the monastic rank. And our mission – of bishops and priests - is to help you. We also pray today for our guys at the frontline, for their mothers, who are numerous here. Let the Lord God bless our land with peace, so that we do not have to bury our sons and daughters any longer – and they dedicated themselves for God and for Ukraine.”

The pilgrims who

gathered in Goshiv in Yasnaya Gora were not only from Ivano-Frankivsk region. “This is a Christian mission to teach children to be close to God,” says Mrs. Olena, who came with her family and two little sons from Lviv. “In such places, we always feel faith and how strong it is. Therefore, I would consider it even a sin to miss such an event. It is necessary for the children to be accustomed to it from the early age. We are for the first time in Goshiv and the impressions are extraordinary, there is wonderful atmosphere, it's nice, nice that there are many children here.”

“For us, this is a family pilgrimage,” Lyubomyr Strinaglyuk from Ivano-Frankivsk says. “I am here, first of all, to ask the Lord for the remission of sins. We also have a historic, unique day, because we not only celebrate the 400th anniversary of reform in the Basilian order, but also the Synod of Bishops is taking place. Our Church is developing; it needs a wise guide. Consequently, we hope that the Holy Spirit inspires church leaders to take good decisions, because we are living

in a difficult time and, of course, all of the challenges we face also need to be solved at the spiritual level. With this expectation and prayer, we ask God to continue to lead our church to development, so it receives a new breath to survive through the challenges we have.”

It is with a great enthusiasm that those present at the pilgrimage in Goshiv received the famous Hryhoriy Veryovka Choir from Kyiv. The team accompanied the Hierarchical Liturgy and performed a number of well-known Ukrainian folk songs.

“We are full of emotions, after all, numerous hierarchs came here,” says Zenoviy Kurinets, the general director and artistic director of the National Honored Academic Ukrainian Choir of Hryhoriy Veryovka. “We are honored to be in such a glorious company. So many Christian people have gathered here. The heart is full of grace. We were the first to accompany the Greek Catholic Liturgy. So far we have been singing with

priests of the UOC-KP. Incidentally, a week ago we visited Czestochowa, where John Paul II left his mark and where stays our Ukrainian icon of the Mother of God, which stopped Turkish invasion at one time. Pope at Angelus: ‘open your hearts to forgiveness'

September 17, 2017

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has urged all Christians to open their hearts to forgiveness.

Speaking to the crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square for the Sunday Angelus, the Pope said that to be able to build peace one must be able to forgive.

“Forgiveness does not deny the injustice one has been subjected to, but it acknowledges the fact that the human being, created in the image of God, is always superior to the wrong that is committed” he said. The Pope was reflecting on the Gospel reading of the day which narrates

the “Parable of the unforgiving servant.”Commenting on Jesus’ invitation to forgive “not seven times, but seventy-seven times,” Francis said this means that Christians are called always to show forgiveness.

God wants to forgive us

“From the day of our Baptism, he said, God has forgiven us, remitting a terrible debt: the original sin. And then, with infinite mercy, he forgives all of our sins as soon as we show the smallest sign of repentance.”Anyone – the Pope continued – who has experienced the joy of peace and interior freedom that comes from

having been forgiven, can open himself to the possibility of forgiving.

And he pointed out that this teaching is also contained in “The Lord’s Prayer” which says: ‘forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.’

God’s infinite love for us

God’s forgiveness, Francis said, is a sign of “His overflowing love for each of us”: that love that gives us the freedom to stray – like the prodigal son – but that every day awaits our return with open arms; it is the love of the shepherd who goes in search of the lost sheep; it is the tenderness with which each sinner

is welcomed when he knocks at His door.

“The Lord is full of love and He wants to offer it to us, but he cannot do so if we close our hearts to loving others” he said.
