Discovering Puerto Rico

and its Attractions

Vieques is known as La Isla Nena (little girl island) and Isabel Segunda (Isabel II). Vieques was founded in 1843, it’s 21 miles (34 km) long and 3 miles (5 km) wide, and it is 52 square miles (135 square km) in area. It was annexed to Puerto Rico in 1854. Vieques derives its name from the Taino Indian word for Small Island “Bieques”. The Island is located between Puerto Rico and St. Thomas (USVI), and is separated from the southeast coast of Puerto Rico by ap-proximately 8 miles of sea, although if you are taking a ferry from Fajardo the distance will be 18 miles. Numerous other small cays (islets) lie offshore of Vieques. Beauty and history merge on this 21 by 4 mile island. Arawak Indians once lived there and it was an infamous heaven for pirates during the 17th century. Various European powers fought for control of Vieques. The Punta Mulas Lighthouse also known as Morropó was built in 1893. This old lighthouse still protects the port, boasts a re-flector imported from Paris in 1895, which extends a beam that can be seen from as far as 16 miles. The Island is also the home of phosphorescent Mosquito Bay. This rare and remarkable phenomenon is caused by millions of lu-minescent dinoflagellates lighting up when disturbed by move-ment. The dinoflagellates, a tiny form of marine life, have character-istics of plants and animals, their size range from about five to 2,000 micrometers (0.0002 to 0.08 inch). Snorkeling and Scuba are excellent, especially at Blue Beach. Want to experience Vieques like never before? Join our upcoming Scuba Trip to Vieques on October 23th for details call 787-707-3734.Source: http://www.topuertorico.org

Chemely Michel Walker was born in Tacoma, Washington on November 8th, 1984. For several years Mrs. Walker worked within the Depart-ment of Parks and Recreation for the City of Newport News as a Ranger Technician and an Animal Control Officer, both positions as-sisting and serving the public. After marrying her best friend, who is an active duty member of the United States Coast Guard, they were relocated to their second duty station here in San Juan, Puerto Rico. As of August 1st, 2011, Mrs. Walker has joined the Child, Youth and School Services department as an Adminis-trative Assistant.

Whether or not you recognize the signs, it’s likely that at some point in your adult life, someone you know is a victim of domestic abuse. The person may be someone you serve with, someone from your community, or a family member or friend. This article provides infor-mation about domestic abuse and the resources available to service members and military family members. Although we have used the words “woman,” “she,” and “her” throughout this article, please be aware that men can also be victims of domestic abuse, and that this in-formation applies to these situations, too. Understanding domestic abuse When you think of domestic abuse, images of violent actions -- slapping, kicking, punching, pushing, sexual assault, or threatening with a weapon -- may come to mind. But domestic abuse can also involve a pattern of emotional and verbal abuse. Abusers may hurt their victims by using insults, put-downs, public humiliation, and name-calling. Or they may threaten violence, suicide, financial de-privation, or taking away the children. These tactics are sometimes used to silence victims so that they’re afraid to seek help or call the police. The Department of Defense and every branch of service have made it clear that domestic abuse within military Families is contrary to the values of military service. But abuse continues to damage many military Families. Unique ex-periences of military life may increase the risk of domestic abuse within some Families. These experiences include: • High levels of stress created by the cycle of deployment and reintegration

• Frequent relocation that separates military Families from social support systems

• Economic dependence of many military Spouses Victims of domestic abuse often experience great difficulty making decisions about the abusive relationship. They may feel ashamed or responsible for the violence, as if it were provoked or deserved. Or they feel isolated and alone, believing that there’s no one to turn to for help. They may fear for their life or their children’s safety. They may be financially dependent and have no means of support for themselves and their Families. Or they may fear the loss of their own or their spouse’s mili-tary career and its consequences if the abuse is revealed. If you think someone you know is subject to domestic abuse • Show your concern. Let the victim know you are ready to listen and provide help. You might begin by saying, “Has anyone been hurting you or threatening you?” Or, “I’m concerned for your safety. I’m here to help.” • Let the victim know that you believe her. • Tell the victim that she doesn’t have to stay in an abusive relationship and that help is available. You can urge the victim to contact the installation’s Family Advocacy Program (FAP) and speak with a victim advocate at 787-707-3709; call the Command Chaplain at 787-707-2225/3405 or Crisis Hotline at 787-749-1333.

Military Heroes Fund provides wounded Soldiers with services that the Defense Department cannot offer due to budgetary and regulatory restrictions. These unmet needs are identified by the military command, the Military Severely Injured Center, VA advocates and others:• Child Care at Walter Reed provided for Families of the wounded recovering at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC)

• Laptop Computers for Wounded Soldiers and their Families staying at Fisher Houses at Military hospitals so they can keep in touch with family and friends, including their still deployed comrads

• Hospice suite at WRAMC built and donated by the Foundation for Deployed Soldiers and other diagnosed with terminal cancer, allowing them to spend their last days in comfort, sur-rounded by their families and friends

•Emergency Financial Support granted to Families facing crisis due to injuries and natural dissasters.

•Other Programs for Patients and Families support them in many ways during their recovery

In 2010, Military Heroes Fund has paid $330,000 in bills to help Families of the wounded overcome financial emergencies, and $50,000 for day care for children of the wounded at military hospitals.

Scuba Trip to Vieques Island Sunday, October 23rd. Cost: $95.00 includes two dives and refreshments. Call Outdoor Recreation at 787-707-3734 to sign up.

Tips for planning a diving tripExploring aquatic wildlife is one of the most sought after pursuits of adventure lovers. Scuba diving is a good means to explore the sub aquatic environment. It has evolved a lot lately and with better safety and modern equipments, scuba diving is an adventure that anyone can immerse into. There are abundant diving clubs all over the world where one can learn diving from the pro-fessionals. You can take your whole family on a diving trip to the entrancing dive sites in Puerto Rico, Thailand, Indonesia, Brazil or New Zealand and inspect the sub aquatic life at a point blank range. If you are contriving on a diving vacation, here are some tips that may come in handy. Carry proper apparels before setting off on your diving vacation. On the beaches, you won’t shake with cold, so it isn’t necessary to carry a trunk load of warm clothes. Pack ample shorts and T shirts. You’ll need sandals and other footgear that would be well suited to wear at a seaside. Also carry enough undergarments as you will need to change them frequently. Do not forget to carry courtly clothes for the nights out or when seeing historical and religious places.

The US Army does not officially endorse sponsors.

Besides basic article of clothing, you’ll need other outfits that you might require while diving. Carry your bathing suits and swimming trunks and carry at least three or four of them. Also carry a water resistant jacket and life vest for you never know when you may land in an emergency situation. And most of all, carry the right diving gear. You may also get one at the dive site but if you are planning on taking your own diving equipment, be sure it is in correct working order. Better get it maintained and checked properly. Or you can also pick a new one if your old scuba gear is already in ruinations. Decide where you will be going for your diving trip. If you don’t have many days at hand plan a trip to dive sites that aren’t very far away from your urban center or your country. If you have enough time, you can go miles across the conti-nents to dive sites in the most exotic destinations. Learn about the diving experts at a diving clubs, the lessons they give, the safety measures they adopt etc.. There are lots of travel forums on-line where you may fortunately stumble upon the thread on the dive site you’re planning to go to. Read what others say about it and make a proper decision. Find the salient features of the dive site you’ll be visiting. Find out about sharks and dolphins that dwell in the area, the coral reefs, bottom dwellers etc. Again, rely on the Internet to look for such data.

Some beaches are home to lots of worms. Mosquitoes and other parasites are common in many coastal areas; therefore it is better to carry insect repellents. Also carry a first aid kit and a small toolkit with the basic instruments. Don’t forget your Cam and binocular back home; you’ll regret big time not having them at the dive site. Along with that, you can also carry your netbook for surfing the net while en-joying the cool seaside breeze. Source Articlebiz

During World War II, the all Puerto Rican 65th Infantry Regiment had been broken up with its three battalions relegated to backwater assign-ments where combat was unlikely. Still smarting from this slight, the 65th regained a measure of respect when it soundly defeated the veteran 3rd Infantry Division during post-World War II maneuvers. This training victory foreshadowed future battlefield victories. The 65th proved resolute in combat during the Korean War. First the Borinqueneers battled their way north from the Pusan Perimeter. Later they defended the strategic port of Hungnam in the face of seemingly overwhelming Chinese attacks, providing a “safe harbor” for the retreat of X Corps from the Chosin Reservoir.

Sports By Irma Arlene Munoz, YS Sports

Sports builds character in kids by teaching sportsmanship and learning skills that are use-ful in the world later in life. Life sports are exer-cises and activities that allow for participation over an entire lifespan. A few of the most com-mon life sports include golf, tennis, bowling, swimming, bicycling and more. Getting kids interested in sports that they won’t quickly out-grow is much like providing them with a bit of insurance in life.

Habits formed in childhood are often hard to break, so it is important that parents and other professionals make an effort to infuse good habits in children at an early age. In an ideal world all people would eat healthy foods and get plenty of exercise throughout their lives. The reality is quite different with many people living sedentary lives and paying the price with their health. Encouraging kids and teens to take an interest in activities that they are likely to continue into adulthood is a terrific way to promote ongoing participation in sports, helping them to main-tain robust health.“Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance and most of all love of what you do” Pelé, Brazilian soccer legend

Kindertots is designed to develop the total child through gross motor skills, movement creativity, physical development and body awareness while learning numbers, colors, shapes and songs. Theater, Modern Dance and Tutoring classes will be also included in the contract for this coming Fiscal year. We are now registering for piano, karate, swimming, tennis and guitar. Please contact the CYSS Parent Central Services office for more infor-mation by calling at 787-707-3434/3787.

Community Club Competitive in the wedding industryFort Buchanan’s Community Club was part of one of the largest events of weddings in Puer-to Rico Expo Novias y Quinceañeras de San Juan held at the Puerto Rico Convention Cen-ter September 17th and 18th . Attendants had the opportunity to get first hand informa-tion on services available to the community from the Club’s staff. Once again the booth featured as one of the most attractive, with competitive offers for couples and wedding planners that attended.

Mr. Omar Morales from the Community Club & Conference Center, was recently awarded 1st Place for creating the most original drink out of 17 participants

at the “Escuela Hotelera de PR”, where he has been certified as bartender. To be certified, students must complete sessions in cock-tail mixing, bartender responsibilities, bar ethiquette, cocktail garnishing, tropical beverages, basic ethnology, and the final exam is creating a signature cocktail. He was informed that his drink will be regis-tered with Rums of Puerto Rico. Congratulations to Omar for his achievment!

Details of the concoction:The Quenepón MartiniQuenapa infused citrus rum with a floater of Grand Marnier served in a Martini Glass.(Please remember this is a seasonal drink as long as there are quenepas available).

The Borinquen Lounge and Patio is featuring this seasonal drink for $5.00Stop by and have a taste as you enjoy our Grilled Menu Specials available on Thursdays and Fridays after 4:00 pm.

The Community Club and Conference Center is here to provide the community with a place they can come to enjoy good food and good company in a safe, friendly environ-ment.

The daily lunch buffet served in Salon Caparra has become a haven for our Veterans and their Families. Here they can have a fresh, hot and healthy meal at an affordable price. The menu varies from day to day and has something for everyone.

BBQ Nights on Thursdays and Fridays have become a must for families with children… the minute the kids see the inflated bouncer, the shoes start flying as the kids make a mad dash to start jumping up and down! If you haven’t tried our Chicken Pinchos or the Churrasco with homemade Chimichurri Sauce you don’t know what you’re missing!

The Bohemian Nights every third Friday of the month are filled with nostalgia for young and old alike as they enjoy romantic music that brings back the best of memories. Dancing and cuddling is allowed!

The Community Club has five standout events every year: Easter, Mother’s Day, Fa-ther’s Day, Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve. All of these events have grown year to year as the word has gotten out on how great the food, service and ambiance is. That and the price too! The 4th of July celebration was held at the Community Club for the first time this year and it was awesome! We had front row seats to great entertainment and the fireworks dis-play seemed to be in our own back yard. We know next year’s will be even better.

It’s wonderful when we hear the stories of couples that have held their wed-ding reception here or families that have celebrated their daughter’s quinceañero or grandbaby’s baptism party here . Most of them hold these events so dear to their heart that they come back when it’s time to plan other family events.

Oh, and we can’t leave out Bingo… every Tuesday and Thursday starting at 5:30 pm. There are people that have been coming here for years in hopes of winning that jack-pot. And quite a few have! You could be the next lucky one! With up to $5000.00 in prizes, $35.00 for the packet is worth the chance.

To all of our patrons, we thank you and your families for your continued support and hope that in some small measure we make a differ-ence in your everyday lives.
