From Our Pastor

Dear Parishioners of Saint John Bosco,

I want to thank you again for your warm welcome. Although we couldn’t have very many people at my installation last Saturday evening, Bishop Rivituso was very pleased and prayed for the day when churches can be fully open again! Thanks to all who worked so hard on the event, especially Cindy Meirink, Jodi Toliver, the rest of the music ministry, and all the ministers.

You will find that I have a deep devotion to the Sacred Heart, especially the First Friday Devotion and the “Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network,” formerly called the “Apostleship of Prayer.” The “Morning Offering” has been part and parcel of my life since I was a child. We said it at home every morning and then we said it again at school, as part of our morning prayers.

Each month there were two intentions for the Pope: A General Intention and a Mission Intention. Pope Francis has changed to having just one General Intention, formulated years in advance, with the option of adding other intentions as time draws on.

This month’s Prayer Intention of Pope Francis is: The Laity’s Mission in the Church: We pray that by the virtue of baptism, the laity, especially women, may participate more in areas of responsibility in the Church.

Each month a reflection is offered about the intention. This month’s is from Father David Stewart, an English Jesuit. I invite you to read, pray, and reflect about YOUR role today:

A busy, Sunday morning at our North London parish. A request between Masses. “Please give me permission, Father, to do this certain thing (exactly what must remain private) if the church allows it.” Another parishioner, known as a forthright character, chided the questioner: “What do you mean, if the church allows it! The church is all of us.” But far from being ill-tempered, it was a lovely moment. Each felt a different warmth for their church.

We are invited to lift our eyes, our imaginations and our hearts, to something much greater; not as a distant prospect but as a present reality of which we’re already part. At times it’s too great for us to take in. Some of us refuse it because of the inconsistency of those charged with leadership and responsibility. At other times, we suspect we’re not worthy of it; that only the holy are qualified.

The full, active participation and leadership of the laity, sacramentally mandated in baptism, is not a devolved power! At times there can be an erroneous “power-culture” in the church, presenting as clericalism or hierarchicalism, which is at odds with what we’re meant to be, all of us, in response to the One who came not to be served but to serve. So, together, let us pray!

Faithfully yours, Father Joe Weber

St. Vincent de Paul News

We welcome John Stephan as the new President of the

St. John Bosco conference of the St. Vincent de Paul

Society. John will lead us in carrying out our call to help

those in need.

The monthly food collection program will resume

next weekend. You may bring a bag of nonperishable

food items to the church next weekend. This program,

sponsored by the SVdP Society, helps stock local food

pantries. St. John Bosco parishioners have been very

generous in the past with this program and we are glad to

resume this important ministry. The monthly food

collection is just one of several works that the SVdP does.

Other works include the back-to-school collection, the

annual Giving Tree at Christmas, annual hygiene products

collection and the parking lot box for used clothing/

household items. All of these activities are done with the

help of the whole parish.

Five days a week, the Society answers a hotline set up by

the United Way for people that reside within the

boundaries of the parish. The St. Vincent de Paul Society

assists with utilities, food, clothing, furniture,

prescriptions, and gas.

Sisters, St. Thérèse & Mission Sunday

Srs. Maria and Celia, as nuns in the order of

Misionera Eucaristica de Santa Teresita

(MEST), have a special devotion to

St. Thérèse of Liseux, whose feast day was

October 1. This young Carmelite nun served others in

seemingly unremarkable ways. St. Thérèse is also one of

the patron saints of the missions, not because she traveled

the world, but because of her love of the missions, and

the prayers and letters she gave in support of missionaries.

As we approach World Mission Sunday, which we

celebrate on October 18, we are reminded of St. Thérèse

and her “little way” and of Srs. Maria and Celia, who serve

our parish. When we wonder about our purpose in the

Church, it is good to remember that it is often the little

things we do that help keep God’s kingdom growing.

Blessing of the Pets at Noon

You are invited to bring your pets to the front

of the church today at noon for a special

blessing for your pet. In the spirit of

St. Francis of Assisi , the patron saint of the

poor, the sick and animals, we recognize our beloved

friendly, furry and feathered friends with this nice Church

tradition.

Breaking Bread Missalettes Available

The Breaking Bread Missalettes will be available for

parishioners beginning this weekend. You are invited to

take one home and bring it to Mass with you each

weekend. It will become your personal missalette.

Please note that if your copy is left at church, it will be

discarded.

Respect Life Sunday is Today

You are invited to join a Life Chain event

today from 2 until 3 p.m. at Incarnate

Word, along the sidewalk on Olive.

Participants will gather (six feet apart and in

masks) to honor the 60+ million lives lost

to abortion. There will be signs, snacks and drinks as we

gather to celebrate life.

Event Reminders

The Men’s Club will gather on Tuesday, October 6 at

7:30 p.m. in the Gym. The St. Vincent de Paul Society

will meet on Wednesday, October 7 at 7 p.m. Tai Chi

classes have resumed and will take place each Friday at

10 a.m. in the Bosco Room. All are welcome to the

weekly Prayer Service held each Saturday at 7:30 a.m. in

the church. Following the service, we will gather in the

Gym for discussion on faith topics.

Peter’s Pence Collection

Next weekend, we will take up the Peter’s Pence

Collection which provides Pope Francis with the funds

he needs to carry out his charitable works around the

world. This collection, which is usually collected in June,

was postponed this year due to COVID-19.

Rest in Peace

Jean Andert, mother of Ted Andert

May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed,

through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
