Romanna’s musical education began at age 4 with piano lessons. But at age 13, she fell in love with the bandura, a sixty-four string instrument. One uses both hands to pluck the instrument’s strings. Starting with private lessons, Romanna eventually attended a musical conservatory in her home town of Lviv, earning a master’s degree. Degree in hand, Romanna began a 25-year association with two other bandura players that played professionally for 25 years. Romanna came to Minnesota after her tenure with the trio. Some of her family members had already immigrated to Minneapolis, so it made sense to come here. She of course brought along her instrument, and continues to play her repertoire of classical music, folk tunes, and pieces composed for the instrument. In recent years, Romanna has performed at venues such as the Guthrie Theater and the Festival of Nations. Fee: $300, Sound system not needed in small rooms, in larger ones, library needs to provide. NEW!! Alma Andina Andes Mountains traditional music Group members play traditional instruments such as the charango (a strummed string instrument), zampoñes (panpipes) and quena (flute), on traditional songs and dance melodies. But the group also likes to experiment. For example, it enjoys playing cúmbias, which are not part of the original core repertoire in the Andes, but which are very popular in Latino communities, including the Twin Cities. As Venezuela has a strong tradition of percussion and singing, they integrate the Venezuelan rhythms that fit Andean rhythms. Vladimir compares the work of Alma Andina to that of Chilean musicians who were exiled during the regime of dictator Augusto Pinochet. Playing in exile, they picked up influences not native to the music, but which still seemed appealing. Vladimir views Alma Andina’s work as based in Andes Mountains music, but also as a part of world music. Fee: $450 for trio; $700 for 7-piece. Sound system provided. best friends who grew up in Denver, Colorado. They are now accomplished musicians whose original music is inspired by their own backyard adventures – and as you listen to them, they will have you remembering your own make-believe adventures and tree-house pretendings. As you hear their witty lyrics, off-the-wall humor, and unique folk style, the image that may come to mind is of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer whitewater rafting down the Mississippi with Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger! The music of The Okee Dokee Brothers is rooted in their childhood imaginations. Their songs will give you and your audience opportunities to be both silly and serious. And their show will serve as a wonderful connecting point for families as every song makes room for kids to dance, parents to feel like kids again, and everyone to gain respect for nature, each other, and the world we live in. Six Appeal: Educational Experience Six Appeal pursues its passion for learning with the Six Appeal Educational Experience. With members carrying degrees in K-12 Vocal/Classroom Music and in Vocal Performance/Pedagogy, Six Appeal uses real educators to administer proven teaching strategies designed to educate the musician and kindle ambition. The Six Appeal Educational Experience doesn’t subject students to a boring lecture, it provides an opportunity for students to interact with a professional vocal band where they will have hands on experiences to develop skills such as critical listening, healthy vocal technique, intonation, and rhythm. The instructors in Six Appeal guide students through history explaining the origin of a cappella, and the different paths it has taken throughout music history. Each era is supplemented with a live performed example of the style. We teach your students homophony through Barbershop, polyphony with Palestrina, and explain how Vocal Jazz came about. Your students will hone rhythm skills learning how to beat box, and get a chance to sing real music with the group. An in-depth version of the Educational Experience is perfect for a multi-session residency, or it can be condensed to a half-hour overview. Built with the instructor in mind, the customizable module format of Six Appeal's Educational Experience allows instructors to select the different topical components (modules) that are then implemented for the students. In a time where state budgets can't always support every program, Six Appeal is proud to empower students and aid teachers in curriculum-based instruction. Sing, Play, Learn with MacPhail- Join MacPhail Center for Music’s early childhood music specialists as we explore the magic of music and play. Through hands-on musical play activities families will experience music’s impact on learning and reading readiness skills. Together we will sing, rhyme, read, move and create! Ages 0-5. This is a set of programs that can be presented individually, or as a series, that is focused on using music to develop pre-literacy skills in young children. A young child develops multiple skills that lead to his or her ability to read and use language. The process of learning to read begins in infancy with sound and spatial awareness. As they grow, children continue to build literacy skills through vocal exploration, imitation and association of sounds with labels. These literacy skills are embedded in musical play activities. Music engages children more fully in learning by capturing their attention and sustaining their focus. Music is an interactive experience—let it guide hands-on playing with your child! Program Options:

• Rain Makes Music Clapping hands, patting knees, stomping feet, and clicking your tongue will create quite a rainstorm! Which ones sound and feel bumpy?

27

Smooth? We’ll pretend it’s a rainy day and splash in our rain boots or hide under our umbrellas, all the while exploring important musical concepts that help children grow and develop.

• A Musical Snowstorm (winter alternative to Rain lesson) • Animals Make Music What kind of music would make you quack like a duck,

scurry like a squirrel or swim like a fish? Animal sounds and movements are a natural vehicle for children to explore with their voices. We’ll explore the world of animals and their different sounds and movements through musical play.

• I Make Music Dance, hop, wiggle, and freeze! Musical play is a great way to increase body awareness. With an infant, patting steady beats on different parts of the body while you sing or speak promotes body awareness and develops your child’s inner sense of rhythm. As children grow, they can label body parts, and eventually follow directions to move their bodies in specific ways. All this helps them practice focusing their attention on the task at hand—in this case, having lots of musical fun!

• Wheels Make Music Music naturally pairs with and enhances children’s play with “things that go!” We’ll play musical stop-and-go games, and notice the endless sounds and sensations in vehicles—the clicking of the turn signal, the pedaling of bicycle wheels, or the feeling of stroller wheels going over cracks in the sidewalk.

• Colors, Feelings, Music! Have a family dance party! Hear, sing and create music, and respond by acting out the emotions you feel. What kind of music makes you want to dance excitedly? Or go to sleep? Can you and your child mimic each other’s facial expressions? What does happy, sad, or angry look like? We’ll use music to build self-esteem and establish communication understandings.

• Water Makes Music Bath time is so much fun when you add songs and musical play! Go fish (or pretend to go fishing). What water creatures will you see? How do they sound, move, feel? Through musical play we’ll explore lakes, rivers, and oceans and find the steady beat in all of them.

World Language Sing, Play, Learn with MacPhail Developed from the idea that children learn best in their native tongue, the World Language Sing, Play Learn programs were created by MacPhail early childhood music specialists in partnership with early childhood educators who are native speakers from Latino, Hmong, or Somali culture. Ages 0-5. These programs provide a musical play experience focused on developing literacy in each of three languages—Spanish, Hmong, or Somali. Co-taught by a MacPhail World Language Instructor (a native speaker of the respective language) and a MacPhail Early Childhood Music Teaching Artist, the programs are customizable and can be appropriate for a variety of audiences—from all native-speakers of each respective language, to English speakers, or a mixed audience of both.
