LiveArts Program
Friday, April 24, 2015 | 8:00 pmVan Andel Arena
Creative expression and thought lives within all of us, sparked by memorablemoments of inspiration. LiveArts is about celebrating those singular momentsthat make imagination take flight and dreams soar. It is the embodiment ofa community coming together in the spirit of collaboration to celebrate the“inner artist” in us all. We all have a story to tell. We all have our own insights, hopes and dreams that we long to share and it is through the arts—the livingarts—that the voice of a community is expressed. Who we are as a peopleis articulated in what our arts organizations have to say. LiveArts says wenurture, we inspire, we empower.
Whether it is children showing their raw and uninhibited desire to expressthrough music and dance, or adults carrying with them a lifetime of love ofthe arts, there was some moment that lit the flame of expression in them.Inspiration can emerge from almost anywhere. Often, it comes from themyriad of powerful emotions that living life brings with it. It also comes fromthe beauty and wonder of nature. But sometimes, it comes from hearing asimple, yet profoundly beautiful melody soaring off the strings of a cello likea swan taking flight. This is how our journey in LiveArts begins.

I Will Rise
I Will Rise was commissioned by the Grand Rapids Symphonyfor LiveArts. The piece brings the listener on a journey from darknessinto light, from isolation into community. Scored for full orchestra, WestAfrican drumming, multiple choruses and soloists, I Will Rise fusesdiverse elements into a cohesive whole in order to express the importanceof the arts to one’s individuality and to one’s larger community,
Lyrics by Nancy Patterson are combined with three other textualelements: a paraphrase of Ecclesiastes 4:9, “Two are better than one -if you fall, I will pick you up”; a Malinke proverb, “Without joy there isno music - without music there is no joy”; and a single stanza fromFriedrich Schiller’s poem, An die Freude, “Joy, joy moves the wheel inthe universal time machine.” The latter text, not found in Beethoven’ssetting of the poem for his Ninth Symphony, is set to the traditionaltune of the Ode to Joy.
In 2015, two major milestones have been reached in the life of theGrand Rapids Symphony: The orchestra celebrated its 85th seasonand bid farewell to David Lockington as Music Director after 16 seasons. The Grand Rapids Symphony’s commitment to youth in the arts andyouth education programs served as the inspiration for the lyrics of“I Will Rise.”
Notes about the drumming: The West African rhythm, Balakulandjan,is played by the sangban, kenkeni, dununba and djembes in the firsthalf of this piece. In the Malinke tradition, Balakulandjan is a rhythmthat is played at any occasion where children are present, such asbaptisms, naming ceremonies, weddings and family social events. TheBalakulandjan songs says “A child is better than anything in the world.”This rhythm honors David Lockington’s passion for music educationopportunities for children and recognizes the growth in outreach andthe birth of the Youth Chorus program under his leadership.
The second half of the song incorporates a dununba rhythm writtenby Leah Ivory. Dununba, the name of the largest West African drum,is also the name of a family of rhythms which reference the “dance ofthe strong men.” This rhythm was chosen to honor the strong leadershipof Maestro Lockington.
