Cords and Sinuses

Central Vein

The Lobules3 modes of architecture

• Classic Lobule – a hexagon with a central vein in the middle and portal triad (hepatic artery, portal vein, bile duct) at boundary points.

• Portal Lobule – connects 3 adjacent central veins into a triangle; it follows bile drainage

• Liver acinus – diamond shaped and bordered by 2 central veins and portal triads.

Lymph

• Endothelium of Sinusoids is fenestrated• Space of Disse = place of exchange of

materials between blood and hepatocyte

Space of Disse

Space of Disse

Bile

-Made by hepatocytes

-Drained into Bile ducts

-Moves in opposite direction from blood to portal triad

-Nasty stuff – Caniculi are bounded by tight junctions

Bile Canaliculus

Bile Canaliculus

Bile Canaliculus

Bile Canaliculus:

• holds bile

• btwn hepatocytes

• tight junctions

• communicates with bile duct

• flows in opposite direction of blood

Space of Disse:

• holds lymph

• communicates with sinusoids via fenstrations and with Space of Moll and lymphatics

What is at the pointer?

Is it carrying blood/bile to/from hepatocytes?
