Capt. Livermore Whittredge, Jr. -- from whom we are directly descended through our paternal grandmother Esther Moulton (Whittredge) Smith (Smith (1886-1970) -- was born February 13, 1738/39 in Beverly, Mass. to Lt. Livermore and Mary (Gadge) Whittredge. He was baptized on February 17.

Livermore Whittredge, Jr. married Lydia Herrick on October 28, 1765 in Beverly. She was born on July 2, 1741 in Beverly, the daughter of Daniel and Sarah (Raymond) Herrick.

The couple had seven children. One died in infancy. We are descended from the sixth child of this union, Thomas Whittredge (1783-1858).

Lydia (Herrick) Whittredge was 45 when her seventh and last child was born.

Livermore, Jr. and his wife Lydia belonged to the First Parish Unitarian Church, Beverly.

Livermore, Jr. became a merchant and a very successful one at that.

Livermore Whittredge, Jr. died on November 22, 1803 in Beverly. His gravestone in the Central Cemetery (aka Hale Street Cemetery) in Beverly reads:

IN MEMORY OF / CAPTAIN / LIVERMORE WHITTREDGE / OB NOV 22 1803 / AET 63.1

The “Capt.” in his gravestone inscription indicates military service.

Livermore Whittredge, Jr. died intestate. But, his wealth and other things about him can be deduced from the lengthy inventory of his estate that was taken. (See Appendix A.)

An inventory of the estate of Capt Livermore Whittredge late of Beverly, Merchant deceased, was taken May 26, 1804 and sworn to July 3, 1804. It consisted of substantial real estate including land at the water’s edge (a wharf) and a farm situated in the part of Beverly called Montserrat containing about 115 acres. The total value of his real estate was $12,300. His personal estate was worth $18,915.68. This means that the total value of his estate was over $31,000, a remarkable sum for the times.

One-third of Livermore’s estate was assigned to his widow Lydia. The remaining two-thirds was divided among his children.

From his inventory (including schooners; shipping appurtenances such as riggings, and large quantities of various items such as fish, molasses, coffee, and salt that would be obtained in trade) and the fact that his real estate included a wharf, it is evident that Capt. Livermore, Jr. was involved in mercantile commerce.

Worthy of note are the books in his library, which included a large Bible and several other books, among them: Matthew Henry, 1662-1714, An Exposition of the Old and New Testament; Job Orton, 1717-1783, Six discourses on Family Worship; Edward Wells, 1667-1727, An historical geography of the New Testament; Edward Wells, An historical geography of the Old Testament; and John Willison, 1680-1750, Sacramental Meditations and Advices.

Livermore, Jr.’s wife, Lydia (Herrick) Whittredge, died a wealthy widow in Beverly on August 29, 1804, nine months after her husband’s decease.2 Her death is recorded in the records of the First Parish Unitarian Church. She was buried in Central Cemetery (aka Hale Street Cemetery) in Beverly.

Inventory of the Estate of “Mrs. Lydia Whittredge late of Beverly ... Widow, deceased" was taken on January 14, 1805. (See Appendix B.)
