DESCRIPTION

Building a city’s global reputation takes the dedication of a terrific number of organisations and individuals. Last night those people were recognised at the Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards. The awards celebrated our strongest tourism advocates, events and venues and it’s thanks to these guys that our visitor economy is thriving. So what was the selection criteria? Vibrancy, passion, dedication, hard work and a total commitment to giving our city’s visitors a world class service, in the UK’s friendliest city. It was a great evening but a tough contest. All the nominees are definitely winners and have done us proud.

Welcome

On behalf of the Visitor Economy Board I would like to extend a warm welcome to you all to the 2014 Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards. I am delighted that we have re-established this important celebratory event to recognize and reward the very best of what our marvellous region has to offer visitors. The nominations we received for this year’s awards suitably reflect our visitor economy: they were vibrant, oozed passion, demonstrated real commitment and shone for their individuality and creativity in delivering a quality experience for all. The award finalists provide a showreel of the best from across this thriving region and are a shining example of the amazing results that hard work, dedication to quality, and passionate teams can create. I would like to thank all of our sponsors and also all of you for supporting the event and making it happen! A big thank you also to Cath O’Grady and her team at Eventful for bringing the event to fruition. This is another big year for our visitor economy and the quality and diversity of talent evidenced tonight underlines that this is a City Region with great ambition. Let’s enjoy this night of celebration together and look forward to the future successes we can create and share.

A Message fromLiverpool ONE

The Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards are very important in recognising the best the city region has to offer and Liverpool ONE is proud to be the headline sponsor of this evening’s event. The Visitor Economy is worth £3.4bn to Liverpool City Region and with the sector supporting over 46,000 jobs, celebrating success has never been so important.

This year will arguably be the biggest year for the city since 2008. The quality visitor offer across Liverpool City Region has helped attract headline events including being the host city for the International Festival for Business. We’ll witness the return of the Giants where Liverpool will be the focus for one of the UK’s landmark commemorative events marking the start of the First World War.

Having successfully introduced over twenty new brands to the city in the last twelve months alone, including T.G.I. Friday’s, a Samsung Experience Store and Hotel Chocolat, this year continues to be an exciting time for Liverpool ONE. We’ll be introducing even more new brands to our line-up over the coming months and putting on a whole host of events, helping to keep the city’s leisure and retail offer fresh and appealing to visitors.

I’d like to wish everybody who is nominated the best of the luck this evening.

Your Host for the Evening…Simon Calder

We are delighted to welcome Simon Calder to host the Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards 2014.

Simon Calder is Britain’s leading travel commentator but it wasn’t always like this. He began his career at Gatwick airport, where he cleaned out planes for Sir Freddie Laker and, later, frisked passengers (for a job, that is; not a hobby). He then started to write travel guidebooks and travel articles. Today Simon is Senior Travel Editor of The Independent and is known as “the man who pays his way”, which means that he pays for all his own travel. Simon also writes for the Evening Standard, the i newspaper, BA’s inflight magazine, High Life and a host of other publications. Once a month, he presents the Travel Guru section of The Travel Show (BBC Worldwide and BBC2) where he answers viewers travel questions and queries. He was recently a contestant on Celebrity Master-mind and his specialist subject was Concorde. Much to his amazement, he won. Simon is also a regular guest on national TV, often seen on BBC Breakfast News, Daybreak, ITV News and Sky News. He is often interviewed on BBC radio, particularly for BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio Five Live!

Outstanding Contribution to Tourism

Page 40: Liverpool City Region Tourism Awards 2014

LIVERPOOL CITY REGION TOURISM AWARDS 2014in association with Liverpool ONE

There has been an active volunteer community in Liverpool for many years, and since 2008 a group of around 150 volunteers called City Stars, have been supporting volunteering opportunities throughout the city. City Stars is a joint venture between Liverpool ONE and Liverpool City Council.

A recent recruitment campaign has seen the numbers of volunteers quadruple in preparation for June and July 2014, when the world will come to Liverpool as the city region plays host to the International Festival for Business (IFB 2014). Our City Stars volunteers will help to ensure that we make the most of this fantastic opportunity. They’ll play a crucial role in shaping a wonderful experience for our guests, who will arrive as visitors but return home as true ambassadors for the city, spreading the word that the Liverpool city region is the perfect place to visit and invest in.

So, if you love Liverpool, Halton, Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens, or Wirral, and want to show-off our region, then why not get involved and sign up as an IFB 2014 City Stars volunteer today, visit www.ifb2014.com/Love-Liverpool-Become-a-City-Stars-Volunteer-and-play-your-part-in-IFB-2014-i84.html

LIVERPOOL CITY REGION TOURISM AWARDS 2014@LCRTourismAwards

Hospitality Action is the trade charity offering a crucial lifeline to people of all ages, working and retired, from the hospitality industry. Whether we’re approached by a chef, chambermaid, school cook or bar staff, Hospitality Action will endeavour to support, whatever the difficulty.

Sometimes all it takes is a very small change in circumstances to turn a manageable situation into an unmanageable one. An extended illness such as cancer can lead to a drop in pay, a relationship breakdown, bereavement or redundancy can also put a strain on the household budget.
