Father’s Day(11th June)
Long ago Britainwas covered byforests creatingmagical landscapespenetrated by lone-ly tracks linkingtowns and villages. This was the leg-endary land ofRobin Hood.
The whisperingwoods were charmedplaces, seeminglyserene but where vio-lence and death couldsuddenly strike.
Even kings were notimmune as William II,a red-headed tyrant, discovered at his cost– shot dead by an ar-
row while hunting. The laws of cruel
kings drove people toseek refuge in thegreenwood where theonly habitations wereoccasional charcoal-burner’s hovels.
Until Saxon timesb e a r s l u m b e r e dthrough the trees and

by Stephen Guy, West Derby Societyb e a v e r s d a m m e dstreams. Wolves werewiped out by royal de-cree.
Toxteth Park was aroyal hunting forest, surrounded by a fenceand teeming with deerand wild boar.
As the populationgrew the trees werefelled. The land need-ed to be farmed to feedEngland’s growingcommunities.
Wood was requiredfor houses and fuel.Slowly the forestsdwindled and the roadsand lanes multiplied.Villages were settledand some grew intotowns and towns intocities.
Liverpool started asa manor farm on thebanks of the Mersey, spreading out to engulfvillages that were farolder.
The hunger for first-class timber to buildwarships saw the endof the remaining nativeforests. Shipwrights de-manded oak to build then e w n a v y. H u g eamounts were needed– all the prime oaks inone county were felledto build a single galleon.
The felling of the an-cient oaks reached ahigh point in the timeof Elizabeth I whenEngland was threat-
ened by invasion. Littlemore than 30 of herwarships scattered ordestroyed the hugeSpanish Armada.
In CalderstonesPark visitors get someidea of the atmosphereof the forests that oncecovered the land.
The Allerton Oak(pictured) has been asource of wonder forcountless generationsafter somehow escap-ing the axe. Other treesare mere saplings com-pared to its impressivepresence.
Oaks can thrive de-spite all manner of in-festations and dam-age. Its huge branch-es are supported byiron poles, the trunkhollow and crumbling– yet it lives on and on.
It is said to be over1,000 years old andmay have survivedfelling because even500 years ago its trunkwas so split and bat-tered it would not haveprovided a singleplank.

STRANGE TALES
E SLUG PROTECTION SOCIETYshrubs grew.
She tolerated theendless hours her hus-band spent in theSluggery, a largegreenhouse whereevery species of Britishslug was kept in securecomfort.
He would often poreover illustrations ofslugs with a magnify-ing glass clutched inwhite-gloved hands.
Bertram’s missionhad evolved from hisd a y s w i t h t h eLiverpool Society ofthe Time Rich. It wastheir project countingthe sea shells in RedWharf Bay that hadbeen the catalyst.
“What does it allmean?” he had askedhimself after spend-ing interminable hoursporing over half anacre of sand.
The following weekhe decided what to dowhile working in theshop nobody visited. Aspark of inspiration, aflash of penetrating in-sight made him realise
that slugs – those mostunloved creatures –would become his mis-sion.
Aweek after his au-dacious pellet-snatch-ing raid he was sittingreading the paper to thebuzz of a solitary bee.
Giant Killer Slug
Poised To CreateHavoc in Your Gardenscreamed the headlinewith a picture of a fatslug consuming atomato.
Bertram was movedto tears of compas-sion. He read that theSpanish Stealth Slug
had been identified inCheshire.
His thoughts racedas he became more ex-cited – they were head-ing his way. Bertramknew what he must do– the newcomers hadto be defended at allcosts.
One night he re-turned triumphantlyhome with a jar filledwith Spanish slugs hehad discovered on thefringes of DelemereForest.
He released theminto a special enclosureand watched with lov-
ing, devoted eyes.Three nights later
he did not return for hisusual bedtime drink. The greenhouse wassilent as Alice nerv-ously opened the door.
She gasped as she
saw two feet stickingout from behind a wa-ter butt. Bertram waslying of his back, hislifeless eyes staring atthe moon.
Alice saw the silvertrails of slime leading
into his gaping mouthand knew there wasnothing she could do.

I am 55 years old, andI have 4 sons and 3grandchi ldren . InMarch 2011, I joinedthe Liverpool CatholicRamblers Association(LCRA) and in August2012 I was luckyenough to travel toZakopane in Polandwhere I achieved one ofthe most amazing thingsof my life: I managedto walk up a mountainc a l l e d K a s p o w r yWierch which is about6500 feet high. I had avictory photographdone at the summit andfelt totally exhilarated.Less than a month lat-er, I went for a routine
mammogram and it wasdiscovered that I had amalignant tumour inmy left breast. I havenever known such fearand terror and am stillin shock at the way thishas happened. I had tohave a lumpectomy andradiotherapy at theClatterbridge CancerCentre in Fazakerley. Ican’t thank the staffenough for the care I re-ceived and I will nev-er forget the wonderfulpeople I have met alongthe way”.

Although we can show ourappreciation of dear old dadany day of the year, it’s nice
to know that there’s a spe-cial day devoted to dadseverywhere.
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY - JUNE 16THIn many countries around the
world, including Britain,America, Canada and much ofAsia, Father’s Day is celebratedon the 3rd Sunday in June, whichthis year falls on Sunday 16thJune.
Like many other formal cele-bration days, “Father’s Day”, aswe now know it, was started inthe United States, when a ladynamed Sonora Smart Dodd wasso touched by a Mother’s Daysermon she heard in 1909 that shedecided to dedicate a special dayto her own dad, William. Thefirst Father’s Day was celebratedon June 19th 1910, William’sbirthday, and such a good ideawas bound to catch on as peoplearound the world wished to hon-our the devotion and love of theirown fathers.
So make 167th June really spe-cial for you and your dad!Whether it’s a card, present, orjust some time spent together, have a lovely day. If you findyourself stuck for gift ideas, whynot have a look here in The LINK.You may want to treat Dad to alovely meal at one of the restau-rants advertised or he may enjoy agreat day out on a wonderfulsteam train journey through thecountryside.
Have a great Father’s Day andbest wishes to dads everywherefrom all of us at The LINK.

The first team crowned the end to a greatseason by beating Collegiate 2-0 in thefinal of the Roy Wade Cup. In a matchplayed at Ford Motors ground in Cronton, the uneven playing surface initiallyproved a leveller for both teams.
Alder started the stronger side and AntonyWong played a great ball through for Paul O’Harewho was unlucky with his effort. Alder werethen unlucky to have a penalty appeal dismissedwhen Antony Wong appeared to be fouled inthe area after a searching run. Full backs MickRoberts and Gary Tynan were pushing upstrongly on the flanks. The breakthrough camein the 20th minute when Jobo seemed to be chas-ing a lost cause down the left flank. He man-aged to resist two challenges and cut inside withhis low shot beating the Collegiate keeper toopen the scoring.
Collegiate, with Tom Owens prominent in mid-field, then took the game to Alder and a suc-cession of corners saw them skim the crossbar. The Alder centre back pairing of John Boardmanand John Elias were immense down the middleas all efforts were thwarted. When called uponScott was looking a safe pair of hands in goaland Joe Reynolds was holding the central mid-field together with a strong performance.
The second half again saw a period of Alderpressure, much to the delight of their travellingfans who were encamped in the bar and stand.Timmy Naylor and Keith were making prob-ing runs down the wing but with 20 minutes leftthe game was still in the balance. Guy came onas substitute to provide further problems up frontand the last 15 minutes saw the introduction ofAntony Barnes. The game was won with 5 min-

by the players in ahard-fought campaignthat turned into a re-markable achieve-ment. Team manager,Gary Heaney, declared“Obviously with it be-ing our first seasonwe’re delighted tohave won promotion”.Although this was ateam success therewere individual per-formances worthy ofnote: John Marshallnetted twenty-twotimes from his mid-field slot and this wasmatched by forwardGary Hughes, turningthem into an amaz-ingly prolific goalscoring duo. BillyMangan turned out ina variety of positionsand put in sterling per-
formances and neverlet the team down.
All at the club wereparticularly pleasedthat the Vets had beenable to move up to thetop tier, given that itwas the team’s firstyear in existence, andhas proved to be thebright spot of the sea-son. Club ChairmanKenny Morrison com-mented: “The Vets’performance has beenoutstanding and theyshould be congratu-lated on their achieve-ment. I am delightedfor them. I believe itvindicates our deci-sion to start a Vets sideand I hope their suc-cess continues andspreads to our otherteams”.

South’s dynamicstrikers, Woodcockand Dalton, scored 74goals between them, the former scoring 38goals and the latter 36- a phenomenal effortfrom the pair and a cru-cial element of South’stitle win. Indeed, afterlosing 2-1 to AFCBebington Athletic atthe beginning of April(an incredible game inwhich Bebingtonscored two penaltiesbut had no shots on tar-ge t in the wholematch!), South wontheir last eight leaguematches to ease clearof all their rivals. In that
period, the team scored36 goals including an8-0 thrashing of bot-tom club MerseyRoyal and the teammade history by be-coming the first clubto win the 3rd and 2nddivisions in succes-sive seasons, andscored a mouth-wa-tering 111 goals in 30league games.
The reserve teamfinished a creditables i x t h i n t h e 3 r dDivision of the WestCheshire League, intheir first season in theleague, and might havedone better if theirleading scorer MitchellMcNally had not hadtwo lengthy spells outof action through in-jury. They reached thefinal of the divisionalcup and in an excitingmatch at CammellLaird they lost 5-3 toleague champions
Redgate Rovers afterextra-time. South start-ed the final in finestyle and were 2-0 upafter half an hour withgoals from FrancisEvans and GerardForde.
An Evans headerput them 3-2 up withminutes to go but theywere unable to hold outto the final whistle. And Redgate provedtoo strong in extratime.
The team can be
