The Welfare of Animals at Markets Order 1990Covering calves

(Calf means a bovine animal under the age of 6 months)

• Minimum age – 7 days old• Navel must be healed and dry• Must not be tied up• Adequate supply of suitable bedding• Sufficient size of pen to allow calves to lie down• Provide covered accommodation, adequately ventilated• Declaration to state that the calf has not been brought to a

market more than once during the previous 28 days• All calves must be removed from the market within 4 hours

from the time when the last calf has been sold

• No auction markets are approved for direct export – on normal market days

• Limited number of markets are approved as Export Assembly Centres
