When you invest, you can hire an expensive analyst to try and get you on the right track to buy trendy stocks in hopes of high returns, or you can invest in a total stock market fund and be virtually guaranteed returns consistent with the whole market over time.

People make more money from investing in slow and steady methods than with “get rich quick” schemes.

If you’re working to shed a few pounds or tone up the abs, it works the same way. You can spend hundreds of dollars on weight-loss programs, gym memberships and home-fi tness gizmos, or you can run. Sure, running takes time and eff ort. But doesn’t everything worth doing?

Last fall, I joined the Redmond High School (RHS) cross country team to tone up my body for speedo season (I swim for RHS in the winter). As it turns out, running isn’t that tough! Just throw on some shoes, head outside and the world is yours.

The hardest part, especially for beginning runners like me, is committing. You can make all kinds of new year’s resolutions and not run two steps. You’ve got to commit! The fi rst two weeks are the most di cult because you need to condition your lungs to keep up with your legs. If commitment is a concern, run with friends! Running is most rewarding with others. Not only is running a great way to form strong bonds of camaraderie, but running buddies help push each other beyond limits.

Here in the Pacifi c Northwest, we are surrounded by gorgeous trails and landscapes,

from Marymoor to Farrel-McWhirter. There is, of course, the rain. But don’t let a little drizzle interfere with your running regiment; running in the rain is the best! (Fresher air, fragrant smells and a primordial sense of unity with the outdoors all make for an incredible experience.)

Once you’ve made running a habit, mix it up a bit. It’s important to run di erent workouts to prevent strain and improve composition in all muscles important to running. Running up and down hills, increasing the pace for short distances, slowing the pace for a long distance, and recovering frequently will keep you in top shape.

A great way to measure progress is by regularly running in 5k races. For most community-based 5ks, you don’t need to be an expert runner to participate. For example, the annual Redmond Color Run for Heart (at 8:30 a.m. May 14 at Redmond Town Center, sign up at http://bit.ly/1Sa4gtW), which I have helped put together the last few years, encourages the participation of runners of all abilities. You can support your own health and the missions of various nonpro ts through events like these.

Ultimately, you get out of running what you put into it. It takes guts and mental strength. But trust your willpower and stick with it.

In 11 weeks of running, I lost 10 pounds, toned my legs and abs, and boy do I ever rock that speedo.

Run Redmond:It’s well worth it

By Charlie Pangborn

Staying Safe on the SlopesWith Overlake primary care physician Alex DeMoraes, MD; and orthopedic surgeon Tyler Nathe, MD.

As the air gets crisp, there’s nothing like strapping on your skis or snowboard, and speeding

down a snowy mountainside.

But winter sports can be physically

demanding, causing injuries

from wrist and ankle fractures to

ACL (knee ligament) tears. We asked Alex

DeMoraes, MD, an OMC primary care physician,

and Tyler Nathe, MD, an orthopedic surgeon with

Proliance Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine who practices

at Overlake, what winter sports enthusiasts need to know to stay

healthy.

What can skiers and snowboarders do to help prevent injuries?

Dr. DeMoraes: People who go skiing or snowboarding for the weekend, but don’t do it often, sometimes go beyond their physical capabilities. Try to exercise a couple of times a week during the season so you’ll have more strength for better performance and decreased chance of injuries. Also, it’s important for snowboarders to consider using wrist guards because wrist injuries are the most common ones in snowboarding And, I recommend everybody who skis or snowboards wear a helmet.

When people get injured, how can they determine whether

they should see a doctor?

Dr. DeMoraes: Someone should see a doctor if the injured area is really pu y and swollen, or in the case of a knee or ankle injury, if a mild limp due to pain doesn’t resolve after a few days.

If an injury is serious, what is the treatment?

Dr. Nathe: For ACL injuries (torn ligaments inside the knee joint), we generally dosurgery to replace the ACL with a reconstruction. Fractures can be treated with a combination of casting or sometimes surgery, depending on the type of fracture.

Following treatment, can someone generally get back on the slopes?

Dr. Nathe: Once patients have regained their range of motion and have full strength in the injured extremity, they’re able to go back to skiing or snowboarding. If you’re a skier, we individualize your care to get you back skiing as soon as possible. If you’ve had ACL surgery, once you’ve rehabbed it successfully, you can typically return to skiing without a brace. I advise people to work on a strengthening program to make sure their core and legs are strong to prevent another injury. That process takes nine to 12 months for an ACL, and for certain types of fractures, it may only be six weeks.

Homegrown Sustainable Sandwich Shop is a fast-casual restaurant with a conscience. Every element of the sandwich shop is thoughtfully curated and its impact on the environment evaluated: from the reclaimed building materials used to construct each store, down to the ingredients in each sandwich, soup and salad sold within it.

Founded in 2009, ‘sandwich environmentalists’ Ben Friedman and Brad Gillis started Homegrown Sustainable Sandwich Shop with one mission; to not only create sandwiches with sustainable ingredients but to make sandwich creation sustainable itself.

Homegrown opened its flagship store in Seattle and in 2014, Friedman and Gillis took their passion for local sourcing one step further and launched Sprouting Farms, Homegrown’s very own certified organic farm that supplies seasonal, organic produce for their menu.

Friedman and Gillis have opened 10 stores in the Seattle area (including shops in Redmond and Kirkland) and plan to expand to San Francisco in mid-2016.

A Seattle native, Friedman received his bachelor degree from Boston University with a focus on advertising and sociology and holds a certificate in commercial real estate from the University of Washington; all skills that would soon help him open Homegrown. During the summer after junior year of college, Friedman

reconnected with longtime friend Gillis to hatch a plan for a sustainable sandwich shop. His work, dedication and passion for Homegrown’s mission landed him a position on the 2016 Forbes 30 under 30 list.

Born and raised in Seattle, Gillis moved away to pursue environmental science at Bowdoin College in Maine. Gillis moved to Boston for an internship after junior year and roomed with longtime friend and kindergarten classmate Friedman. They leveraged their shared passions for food and sustainability into a business plan. Gillis applied his knowledge of environmental science and social entrepreneurship to help form the business plan for Homegrown and at the young age of 23, he and Friedman opened their first sustainable sandwich shop.

HIGHLIGHTSFood and drink

Homegrown sells more than just sandwiches; also on the menu are soups, salads and Seattle favorite, Stumptown Coffee. Every producer, rancher and grower at Homegrown must follow a strict set of sourcing guidelines. All animals must be treated humanely and fed and all-vegetarian diet without antibiotics or hormones. All of the produce is 100-percent-certified organic and

sourced locally whenever possible. Eggs and dairy come from cows and chickens that are humanely raised without antibiotics and hormones.

Homegrown’s menu is divided up into breakfast, sandwiches, soups, salads and combos. Each season there is a new seasonal sandwich, for example a Turkey Cranberry with roasted turkey breast, organic cranberry compote made with Starvation Alley Farms cranberries, sage aioli and greens in winter and a Mt. Townsend Grilled Cheese in fall. Signature sandwiches include their bestselling turkey, bacon and avocado, a TLT with organic tofu, spinach, cherry tomatoes and roasted garlic aioli, and the Ham and Beecher’s with ham, Beecher’s cheese, caramelized onions, sage aioli and greens.

Sprouting Farms

Founded in 2014, Sprouting Farms supplies all of Homegrown’s Washington stores with hyper-seasonal, certified organic produce throughout the growing season. The farm is a small part of the business, but it solidifies Homegrown’s commitment to staying local. The small-acreage, USDA-certified organic farm is located in Woodinville.

Design

Every element of design at Homegrown was thoughtfully curated with sustainability at the forefront of each decision made during the building process. Each store is designed to be as low-impact as possible by using reclaimed, recycled and FSC certi ed building materials and low-VOC paints for furniture and wall coverings. The stores are all lit with hyper-e cient LED and CFL lighting. In an e ort to further reduce Homegrown’s impact on the environment, trash cans are tiny and infrequently used as the majority of the waste at Homegrown is compostable and recyclable.

All of Homegrown’s packaging is compostable or recyclable and made from post-consumer waste and plant-based materials wherever possible. One-hundred percent of Homegrown’s electrical usage at stores is o set by clean wind energy. The more stores the Homegrown team builds, the more conscious they are of their environmental footprint. Sustainability is central to Homegrown’s mission and where its food comes from and why. The team is equally passionate about changing the way America consumes energy; from fossil fuels to renewables.

Utilization of a physical therapist before and after your joint replacement surgery has been

proven to speed your recovery.

A recent study evaluated the use of a physical therapist before joint replacement surgery. They found that a “pre-habilitation” approach can lessen the need for postoperative care by nearly 30 percent. This approach was found to save an average of $1,215 per person and more quickly return a person to “normal.”

A second study found that the overall length of a hospital stay following either total hip or knee replacements can be reduced through “rapid rehabilitation.” This process starts as soon as the recovery room and continues forward.

These approaches seem to make sense from a nancial as well as a body-function standpoint.

These approaches require interactions with a physical therapist. Your physical therapist will evaluate your situation and create a custom program for your pre- and post-rehabilitation of total joint replacements.

Washington is a direct access state for the profession of physical therapy. Most insurance plans allow you to access a physical therapist without a referral from a physician. You can make the choice.

Basic information on knee and hip rehabilitation may be found at http://www.moveforwardpt.com/SymptomsConditions. Looking for a physical therapist near you? Find more information about physical therapy at www.MoveForwardPT.com or www.PTWA.org.

Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel and foot pain in adults. The classic symptom of plantar fasciitis includes heel pain that is usually most severe rst step in the morning.

Common contributors to this condition include: progressive attening of arches; lack of exibility in the calf muscles; changes in activity levels; overuse and weight gain. There are two main concepts in the treatment of plantar fasciitis: 1) the decrease of in ammation and 2) addressing the cause of the condition.

Steps to eliminate heel pain

1. If you engage in athletic activities, it is important to take a few minutes to warm up with simple stretches. Some athletes may be a icted with heel pain due to the sudden shock that their ligaments experience. Gradually easing in to your workout could save you a lot of su ering.

2. If you are on your feet all day at work,

are an avid runner or are involved in other forms of athletics, it is important to choose footwear that provides a combination of correct arch support and su cient cushioning for your feet. Your feet need the assistance of absorbing the shock of pounding the pavement. Just changing your shoes can help a lot.

3. One of the ways to nd relief from heel pain is to give your feet rest every day. If you work a job that keeps you on your feet all day, especially a position where you are continually pounding the pavement, your feet are going to naturally become tired and sore. At the end of the day, put your feet up and relax. Take some time to allow your heels to recover from the strain that they’ve been put through.

At Integrative foot and Ankle Centers of Washington we o er state-of-the-art

diagnostic and treatments for di erent foot and ankle ailments, including plantar fasciitis. Our conservative treatment for this condition includes: exercise, anti-in ammatory agents, night splints, ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injections, radial pulse therapy, class 4 therapeutic laser and custom-made orthotics. Surgery if conservative therapy fails.

If you su er with heel pain, I invite you to visit us at Integrative Foot and Ankle Centers of Washington at any of our o ces located in Kirkland, Everett and Renton and let’s take a look!

“I have been a long time resident of Redmond who at one time or another has been a member of almost every gym in the area. I went to Koko FitClub only to try it with a friend and quickly became addicted. I was pleasantly surprised at the results I achieved that I had been unsuccessful at attaining at previous gyms. e program is easy to follow and for the rst time I have stuck to it consistently. I don’t have to think about it, I just get myself there and follow the computer screen. I’m in the club for 45 mins to an hour with an e cient workout.

It’s no secret that mobile technology is now inseparable from most of our daily lives. In fact,

mobile tech has become so ubiquitous that some studies claim 91 percent of adults have mobile devices within reach at all times, and most people spend an average of 147 minutes per day using a smartphone.

Mobile devices are no longer just for making phone calls, and they are transforming human connection across myriad industries; chief among them, the health care industry, where traditional engagement models are being reinvented to give patients and providers more access to real-time information than ever before.

At EvergreenHealth, there are several ways we’re seeing mobile play an increasingly important role in patient care, and there are three emerging trends in particular that I see mobile tech enhancing the patient-provider relationship to ultimately help patients live well, improve their health and experience better care

outcomes. At the most basic level, telemedicine is

liberating both patients and doctors from the con nes of scheduling demands and creates more options for connecting when it’s most convenient. Through patient-portal messaging services, patients can email their doctor and care team about non-urgent issues at any time of day, and they’ll receive a timely response from their provider without scheduling an appointment or waiting on hold.

For consultations requiring a real-time interaction, web-based video conferencing allows doctors and patients to virtually meet face-to-face and reap many of the traditional bene ts of a clinic appointment without making the trip.

In-o ce appointments are changing, as well. Thanks to mobile devices, providers can share data and images with patients, review results together and ultimately enhance their interaction.

Anyone who uses a Fitbit knows that mobile tech has also created avenues for patients to generate, track and share a staggering amount

of personal health care data. But beyond the novelty of counting your steps, smartphone applications and wearable technologies can produce patient-generated health care data (like blood pressure, blood sugar, physical activity, sleep quality and other information from home monitoring devices), which is beginning to play a greater role in patient-provider interactions, and it increasingly serves as the as the basis for health programs that can track improvements and outcomes over time.

Smartphones themselves can also be powerful medical devices. With inexpensive attachments, iPhones become biometric screening tools that can measure heart rate, body temperature, respiratory rate, blood pressure and other important vitals. For parents, a camera attachment becomes an otoscope, enabling at-home diagnosis for ear infections and other common ailments. Innovations like these are increasing access to care and lowering costs for patients across the country and on a global scale.

Oh yes, it is the time of year that new year’s resolutions take center stage! Everyone is looking for the “perfect” program that will provide the “best” results in the least amount of time. We have overindulged during the holiday season and are more than ready to make big changes in 2016! It happens to each of us, to some degree, every year. I want to give you a few tips to be successful with your health and fitness endeavors in 2016.

Do what you like or what you are interested inWhy do we torture ourselves with time on the treadmill, if all you like to do is swim? Why spend hours spinning on a bike, if you really want to lift weights? You will never stick to a plan if you dislike it so much you would rather clean your house than workout. Yes, you do need a program that combines all areas of fitness; cardio, strength and flexibility to name a few. Just make sure to find the activities you like to do, that challenge you, but are not complete torture! Try new things and find what works best for you.

Consistency is the key! Most people start all in with five days a week. Then, slowly they fade to once or twice a week, to a few times a month, to I’ll get started again next month and finally, to dropping out. I’ll let you in on a little secret; if you do nothing, that is the exact result you will get. So the key is to get the workouts in regularly!

Find someone or something to hold you accountable This could be a friend, spouse, coach, trainer, workout partner or just about anybody who will help keep you accountable to getting workouts in. And put workouts on your schedule just like you would any appointment. Make that time non-negotiable. This is a time for you and your health. The better your health and fitness are, the better your work and home life can be!

Set goals that actually make sense Changing your health and fitness does not happen overnight. So set goals that reflect that. It can be frustrating to work hard and not see a goal achieved. Set that big goal out there and dream big for this one! But then go back and set smaller stepping-stone goals to help you achieve smaller successes and achievements on a shorter timeline. Now you don’t have to wait so long to be successful! These goals can be measured monthly to keep you seeing the progress that is actually happening! And positive feedback breeds more positive behavior and more success!

Be realistic about resultsAgain, things will not change overnight. Give yourself time and forgiveness if things don’t go exactly like you thought they would. The body doesn’t always give us the results we want immediately or on our timeline. But with consistent hard work, goals can be met! Keep working at it and know that health and fitness is a lifetime journey! Amy Lewallen is the owner of

Iron Tribe Redmond, 8451 164th Ave. N.E., Suite 100.

{‘MOBILE TECH’ Continued from page 9}

Finally, mobile tech is facilitating unprecedented access to patients’ own health care information by allowing patients to view their electronic medical record (EMR) in real time and access important information including dietary, activity and medication instructions. Just as self-service applications dominate the consumer experience, providing patients access to their own information gives them the tools to ask informed questions and takes the guesswork out of recalling immunization dates, test results, prescriptions and other frequently accessed info.

These trends are just a few ways mobile technology is transforming traditional models of patient engagement and the way we deliver health care. Patients should capitalize on this access to information; ask questions, familiarize yourself with the online tools your provider o ers, and feel comfortable integrating the tech you use in your everyday life into your personal health care routine.

Even as technology continues to expand our ability to provide care beyond the physical walls of a hospital or clinic, it’s important to remember that the trust within the patient-provider relationship remains central to truly e ective and meaningful health care.

Notice the word “heal” in the word “health”? Our body wants to instinctively heal itself at all times. If we would just listen to what our body is saying or pay attention

to what our appetites are craving or pay heed to that gnawing pain in our knee telling us to take it easy, we would be better o . When we don’t pay attention to subtle clues and red ags, debilitating injuries and surgery are usually the result. Our body truly wants to stay in a healthy state; the way we were born or the way we were as kids playing outside on the playground.

In order to nd and maintain a healthy state, we have to practice the ne art of balance and moderation. The balance is between working out, resting and nourishing our body. The moderation is in doing the right amount of those things so as not to upset the balance. Think of it as a tripod that you want to keep steady and strong.

It seems as though people are either relentlessly beating themselves up on a daily basis and causing themselves serious injuries from overworking their exhausted muscles,

joints and bones OR they’re lying around on the couch with the remote control because they hate the thought of working out. Both are unhealthy.

Here is where the art of balance and moderation comes in. The hyper- t work-outaholic should learn to take it down a notch and maybe truly enjoy their workout, whatever it is. Sometimes you’ll see runners or people in gyms or group tness classes and the look on their face just says “I hate this! Why am I doing this?” Your workout activity should be something that you enjoy and look forward to. And the work-outaholic should ask themselves ‘if I keep doing what I’m doing, will I be able to do this in maybe 10 or 20 years or should I start going a little easier on myself?’ That runner with the horrible expression on their face just might enjoy power-walking instead.

And for the folks on the couch, tness does not have to mean joining a gym. Walking outside is THE best workout for your mind, body and spirit. Take o the headphones and listen to the birds chirping, inhale deeply and exhale completely, take long strides with a full arm swing and put a smile on your face. Try it, you’ll like it.

It only takes one fall and everything changes. In the assisted-living industry, when an elderly family member (a

mother or father) falls, it often triggers a chain reaction that leaves families scrambling to nd assisted-living services, especially if the recovery requires hospitalization. And now that the holidays are over, many local families are taking stock of issues with senior loved ones at home and asking themselves, “Should mom or dad be living alone? Or how long can they live at home alone?” People often prepare for natural disasters, but experts in the assisted-living industry say not enough of us prepare for this kind of emergency.

Redmond-based Aegis Living wants to help local families by raising awareness about the types of documents, discussions and important decisions that are needed before a crisis hits. Many are state required and require a bit of eff ort to gather. So Aegis Living created a Crisis File to that contains a checklist to help Washington families to navigate these forms. Aegis Living is making these available free of charge as a community service. There is no obligation. Basically, The Crisis File Checklist helps to answer the big question for many families: If something happens, what’s our backup plan?

Documentation from third parties are what become time consuming in an urgent situation because some require calls and meetings with one’s physician and pharmacy to process the documents. That often may require an appointment. Then there’s the issue of meeting with an attorney and discussing sensitive healthcare topics.

Staff at two Aegis Living locations in Redmond is available to show families the checklist and explain the documents. People can drop by Aegis of Redmond at 7480 West Lake Sammamish Parkway N.E. and Aegis of Marymoor at 4585 West Lake Sammamish Parkway N.E.

Cannabis consumers are a diverse group and the cannabis industry has evolved to meet the ever-growing demands for cleaner delivery methods. As a result, more people are enjoying the bene ts of smoke-free products. In addition, more products are available with CBD, which is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid. In other words, products with a high CBD content will not make consumers feel ”stoned” in the same way that THC does. With any consumption method, safety is top priority, and these products are only intended for use by adults 21 years of age or older.

Topicals are a discreet, easy method for consuming cannabis. Lotions, bath soaks and patches are applied directly to the skin, which can provide localized bene t or, depending on the method used, can also be absorbed into the bloodstream for a more traditional high.

Apply topicals directly to the skin in an area where it can be easily absorbed into the bloodstream like the inside of wrists, behind ears, on ankles or temples. Topicals typically absorb within 20-30 minutes and can last hours depending on the amount of THC and the consumer’s metabolism.

Subliguals are a quicker way to enjoy cannabis. Sublinguals are available in oil- or water-based tinctures and mouth sprays. When using a sublingual, the product is allowed to rest under the tongue for 15-20 seconds so the product enters the bloodstream via the mouth tissues.

Edibles and beverages are increasing in popularity, and there are many gluten and other allergen-free options available. Edibles take anywhere from 30 to upwards of 60 minutes to kick in because the compounds enter your

bloodstream as they are digested. The key is to go slow while you determine the ideal quantity of THC and/or CBD for the experience you desire. This requires some self-control because there are really delicious treats on the market!

With each of these methods, the e ects can last hours depending on the THC or CBD content and depending on the consumer’s metabolism.

1. Plan aheadHaving a surgery can be an overwhelming experience, and

it makes sense to do your planning before you arrive at the hospital. Understanding what will happen after your surgery will reduce your stress and help you to remain in control. Ask your doctor about their recommendations for your post-surgical therapy and care before your surgery.

2. Do your homeworkThe Eastside has many excellent options for post-acute

care with excellent inpatient, outpatient and home healthcare providers. You and your doctor should discuss what options will provide you with the best outcomes. Before your surgery, do your research, visit the inpatient rehabilitation centers in your area or get recommendations for home healthcare providers. There are many online tools to help you decide, but there is no substitute for a visit.

Visiting a location and talking with potential care or therapy providers gives you a sense of their philosophy and resources, and empowers you to choose the team that works best for your specific goals. Be sure to communicate with your chosen providers before your procedure and give them your planned procedure date and any special requests ahead of time.

3. Have a backup plan Maybe you won’t need therapy or care after your procedure,

but think about the recovery process before your surgery and evaluate your options. Maybe a loved one is planning to take care of you after your procedure, but plans do change, and if you find yourself in need of a caregiver or inpatient care, it’s better to understand your options and be able to make an educated decision. Providers may become full unexpectedly, and even if one provider is your favorite, it’s smart to have an alternative! (This is another good reason to connect with a provider beforehand!)

4. Pack accordingly When you are participating in therapy, bring and wear loose

and comfortable clothes. Consider clothing that is easy to put on or take off, like cardigan sweaters or zip-up sweatshirts, as opposed to clothing that you must pull over your head. It’s not a fashion show, it’s about being comfortable and being able to move safely. If you have questions about what to bring, ask your doctor or provider directly.

5. Give yourself a break Whether you have chosen to rehabilitate at an inpatient

center, with outpatient therapy or with home health therapists, it is important to invest in your healing, and work hard with your therapist to achieve the best outcomes. Surgery (even the less-invasive types) places your body under stress. Therapy often requires you to be outside of your comfort zone, which may be physically and emotionally difficult. In most circumstances, there is a window for you to maximize your recovery, and a few extra days off may make the difference between a full recovery and frustrating limitations. You only have one body, so take care of it. Give yourself permission to take your time and make the most of your rehabilitation; you deserve it!
