Geschichte von Thonet beginnt 1819, und bis heute
hat unser Unternehmen unzählige Designklassiker

für unsere Familie ein Ansporn, immer nach dem Besten zu streben. Heute sind wir als 5. Generation
im Unternehmen Thonet dafür verantwortlich. Diese Broschüre führt Sie durch unser Möbelprogramm.
Sie gibt Ihnen einen Einblick in die Geschichte des modernen Möbels, die in ihrem Ursprung und in
den folgenden Epochen maßgeblich von Thonet geprägt wurde. Thonet – diese Marke steht für klassi-
sche, zeitlose Eleganz. Deshalb ist es etwas Besonderes, ein Thonet Möbel zu besitzen.
Tradition as an obligation for the future: the history of Thonet began in 1819 and our company has
produced countless design classics to date. The successful past has always been a motivation for our
family to strive towards the very best. Today, this responsibility is borne by the 5th generation of the
Thonet family. This brochure takes you through our furniture range. It provides you with an insight into
the history of modern furniture which has been significantly characterised by Thonet in terms of origin
and during the years which followed. The Thonet brand stands for classic and timeless elegance. It is
therefore something special to own a piece of Thonet furniture.

actualidad de nuestra empresa han surgido innumerables clásicos del diseño. Ese pasado tan

Das Prinzip Thonet. Es war Michael Thonet, der als Pionier des Industrie -
designs im 19. Jahrhundert nicht nur eine Technik zum Biegen von Massivholz
erfand, sondern der auch den Herstellungsprozess seiner Möbel in einzelne
Schritte aufteilte. Diese wurden fortan im Baukastensystem hergestellt.
Damit schuf er die Grundlage für Serienproduktion und einen internationalen Vertrieb. Für den welt-
weiten Verkauf des bekanntesten Stuhls Nr. 14, heute 214, wurden beispielsweise 36 Stühle zerlegt,
in eine Transportkiste mit weniger als einem Kubikmeter Volumen gepackt und dann vor Ort zusam-
mengebaut – in Europa, Asien, Afrika, Nord- und Südamerika.
The Thonet principle. It was Michael Thonet, who as a pioneer of industrial design in the 19th century
not only discovered a technique for bending solid wood but also segregated the manufacturing
process for his furniture into individual steps. Furniture has been manufactured in a modular system
process ever since. He thereby created the basis for serial production and international sales. For
international sales of the most popular chair no. 14, today known as 214, 36 chairs were in parts
packed into a transport crate comprising less than one cubic metre volume and then assembled on
site – in Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America.
El principio Thonet. Michael Thonet, el pionero del diseño industrial en el siglo XIX no sólo inventó una
técnica para curvar madera maciza, sino también dividió el proceso de fabricación de sus muebles en
pasos individuales. A continuación procedió a fabricarlos mediante sistemas modulares. De esa forma,
se constituyó la base para la producción en serie y una distribución internacional. Por ejemplo, para la

Dieser Stuhl gilt als das wichtigste Industrieprodukt des 19. Jahrhunderts. Allein bis zum Jahr 1930
wurde er über 50 Millionen Mal produziert. Der so genannte Kaffeehausstuhl stand und steht heute
noch in Wohnungen, Cafés und in vielen öffentlichen Bereichen. Eine Anekdote erzählt davon, wie in
Paris das Restaurant des neuen Eiffelturms mit Thonet-Stühlen eingerichtet wurde. Dabei stürzte ein
Stuhl von der ersten Plattform aus 57 Metern Höhe in die Tiefe – und nahm keinen Schaden! Bis heute
sind Gestaltung, Qualität und Langlebigkeit für Thonet Möbel die wichtigsten Merkmale.
This chair is regarded as the most important industrial product of the 19th century. It had been
produced more than 50 million times by 1930. The so-called coffee house chair could be found in
apartments, cafés and in many public areas – and this is still the case today. One anecdote relates
how the restaurant in the new Eiffel Tower in Paris was fitted out with Thonet chairs. One chair fell
57 metres from the first platform – and remained undamaged! Design, quality and durability are still
the most important characteristics of Thonet furniture.
Esta silla se considera el producto industrial más importante del siglo XIX. Sólo hasta el año 1930
se fabricó más de 50 millones de veces. La denominada "silla de tertulias" estaba y está presente
todavía hoy en viviendas, bares y muchos establecimientos públicos. Según cuenta una anécdota, el
restaurante de París de la nueva Torre Eiffel fue equipado con sillas Thonet. Una silla cayó desde la
primera plataforma, a 57 metros de altura al
vacío, y ¡no sufrió daños! Todavía en la actuali-
dad, esas características - diseño, calidad y
perdurabilidad - son las más importantes en los

Das Modell 209 war der Lieblingsstuhl des berühmten Architekten LeCorbusier. Er setzte es in vielen seiner Gebäuden ein, zum Beispiel im
Pavillon de l’Esprit Nouveau in Paris, in der Villa de la Rocca und in den
Häusern Nr. 13 und 14/15 in der Weißenhof-Siedlung in Stuttgart. Das
Doppelhaus wurde jetzt originalgetreu renoviert und ist als Museum
öffentlich zugänglich.
The 209 model was the favourite chair of famous architect Le Corbusier who used it in many of his
buildings, for example, in the Pavillon de l’Esprit Nouveau in Paris, in the Villa de la Rocca and
houses no. 13 and 14/15 in the Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart. The semi-detached house has now
been renovated in line with the original and is open to the public as a museum.
El modelo 209 fue la silla preferida del famoso arquitecto Le Corbusier. La incorporó en muchos de
sus edificios, por ejemplo en el Pabellón del Espíritu Nuevo en París, en la Villa de la Rocca y en las
casas números 13 y 14/15 de la urbanización Weißenhof en Stuttgart. La casa pareada acaba de ser

Thonet is culture. All over the world, Thonet furniture
can be seen in the most important museums, galle-
ries and collections – for example in the Museum of
Modern Art in New York, in the Pompidou Centre and

Victoria and Albert Museum in London, in the
Museum of Applied Art in Vienna, in Die Neue Samm-

Die Geschichte der Stahlrohrmöbel ist eng mit dem Bauhaus verbunden. In den 1920er Jahren experimentierten Architekten, die als Lehrer am Bau-
haus tätig waren, mit kalt gebogenem Stahlrohr. Der Holländer Mart Stam
entwickelte seinen revolutionären hinterbeinlosen Kragstuhl – Keimzelle für
die späteren „Freischwinger“-Modelle, die außer von Mart Stam auch von Gestaltern wie Marcel Breuer
und Mies van der Rohe unter anderem bei Thonet umgesetzt wurden. Der Freischwinger gilt heute als
bedeutendste Möbelinnovation des 20. Jahrhunderts. Thonet stellte außerdem zahlreiche weitere
Stahlrohrmöbel her, die sich in ihrer Schlichtheit perfekt in die moderne Architektur der damaligen Zeit
einfügten.
The history of tubular steel is closely linked to the Bauhaus style. In the 1920s, architects working
as lecturers at the Bauhaus experimented with cold bent tubular steel. The Dutchman Mart Stam
developed his revolutionary cantilever without hind legs which sowed the seed for subsequent canti -
lever models also realised by Mart Stam as well as designers such as Marcel Breuer and Mies van der
Rohe at Thonet. The cantilever chair is today regarded as the most important furniture innovation of
the 20th century. Thonet also produced numerous other items of tubular steel furniture whose simpli-
city enabled them to be perfectly integrated into modern architecture of the time.
La historia de los muebles en acero tubular está estrechamente vinculada con Bauhaus. En los
años 20, los arquitectos, que ejercían de profesores en la Bauhaus, estuvieron experimentando con
acero tubular curvado en frío. El holandés Mart Stam desarrolló su revolucionaria silla volada sobre
dos patas: un gameto para los posteriores modelos "autooscilantes" que además de por Mart Stam,
también se emplearon por diseñadores como Marcel Breuer y Mies van der Rohe, para Thonet por
ejemplo. La silla autooscilante se considera en la actualidad la innovación más importante en el

Anfang der 1930er Jahre hatte Thonet das größte Stahlrohr -möbel-Programm. Der Steckkarten-Katalog von 1930/31 enthielt
Entwürfe von Marcel Breuer, Le Corbusier, Hans Luckhardt, Lud-
wig Mies van der Rohe, Mart Stam und anderen Gestaltern der
Zeit sowie zahlreiche von Thonet entwickelte Modelle. Viele von ihnen sind seit dieser Zeit fester
Bestandteil unseres Programms; sie zählen zu den Klassikern der Möbelgeschichte.
In the early 1930s, Thonet offered the largest range of tubular steel furniture. The catalogue of
1930/31 contained designs by Marcel Breuer, Le Corbusier, Hans Luckhardt, Ludwig Mies van der
Rohe, Mart Stam and other contemporary designers as well as countless models developed by Thonet,
many of which have remained firm components of our range ever since and are regarded as classics
of modern furniture history.
A principios de lo años 30, Thonet disponía del mayor catálogo de muebles en acero tubular. El catálogo de fichas de 1930/31 contenía bocetos de Marcel Breuer, Le Corbusier, Hans Luckhardt,
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Mart Stam y otros diseñadores de la
época así como numerosos modelos creados por Thonet. Muchos

Der Architekt Hans Scharoun baute 1933 ein
Haus für die Familie Schminke im sächsischen
Löbau; es gilt als ein herausragendes Beispiel
für die Moderne in der Architektur. Zu einem
großen Teil wurde der Bau mit Thonet Möbeln
eingerichtet. Heute, nach der Renovierung,
stehen dort wieder die Modelle S 533 in der
Originalversion aus den 1930er Jahren.
The architect Hans Scharoun built a house for
the Schminke family in Löbau, Saxony in 1933
which is still regarded as an outstanding exam-
ple of modern architecture. The building was
largely fitted with Thonet furniture. Today, after
renovation, the S 533 models can be seen there
again in the original version from the 1930s.
En 1933 el arquitecto Hans Scharoun con-
struyó una casa para la familia Schminke en
Löbau, Sajonia; está considerado un ejemplo
destacado del Arte Moderno en arquitectura. El
inmueble se decoró en gran medida con mue-
bles Thonet. Hoy, una vez remodelada, vuelven a

Die Werkbund-Ausstellung „Die Wohnung“ in der Weißenhof-Siedlung Stuttgart 1927 demonstrier-
te, wie das „Neue Wohnen“ aussah. Sie fand große internationale Beachtung. In den Gebäuden von
Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, Mart Stam, Bruno Taut, Hans Scharoun und anderen wurden zum
ersten Mal Thonet Möbel aus Stahlrohr einem breiten Publikum präsentiert.
The 1927 exhibition entitled “Housing” staged by the Deutscher Werkbund in the Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart demonstrated what “New Living” could look like. It was met with great inter na -
tional claim. In the buildings designed by Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, Mart Stam, Bruno Taut,
Hans Scharoun and others, Thonet furniture made of tubular steel was presented to a broader public
for the first time.
La exposición de la Unión de Arquitectos "La vivienda" en la urbanización Weißenhof de Stuttgart1927 demostró cómo se entendía la "Nueva residencia". Gozó de una importante repercusión a nivel

an Qualität, Langlebigkeit und Innovation hat sich seit
dem Ursprung von Thonet nicht verändert. Wichtig für
uns ist auch der schonende Umgang mit der Natur, sowohl beim Einsatz von Materialien als auch im
Verarbeitungsprozess. In unserer Produktion in Frankenberg arbeiten wir mit neuesten Technologien,
aber auch mit einem hohen Grad an handwerklicher Fertigung.
Today we develop products in co-operation with famous architects and designers. Our demands on
design, quality, durability and innovation have not changed since Thonet first emerged. What is also
important for us is responsible dealings with nature, both in the use of materials and in the finishing
process. In our production facility in Frankenberg, we apply state-of-the-art technology as well as a
high degree of skilled craftsmanship.
En la actualidad, desarrollamos productos en común con renombrados arquitectos y diseñadores.Nuestra pretensión de generar diseño, calidad, perdurabilidad e innovación no ha variado desde los
orígenes de Thonet. También le concedemos gran importancia a una convivencia respetuosa con la
naturaleza, tanto en el uso de materiales como en el proceso de transformación. En nuestra
producción en Frankenberg trabajamos con las tecnologías más novedosas, pero también aplicando

Das Museum Thonet am Firmensitz im nordhessischen Frankenberg prä-
sentiert die Geschichte des Unternehmens Thonet seit der Gründung 1819 mit
zahlreichen Exponaten, Gemälden und Fotografien. Eröffnet wurde es 1989,
100 Jahre nach der Gründung der Thonet Fertigungsstätte in Frankenberg. Im
eigenen Museum wird die Geschichte von Thonet als Pionier des modernen Möbels anschaulich und
lebendig: die Erfindung des Bugholzverfahrens, Massenproduktion, das neue Material Stahlrohr, die
Erfindung des Freischwingers und mehr.
The Museum Thonet at company headquarters in Frankenberg in North Hesse presents the history
of the Thonet company since its establishment in 1819 featuring countless exhibits, paintings and
photographs. It was opened in 1989, 100 years after the Thonet production facility was first establi -
shed in Frankenberg. The museum illustrates the history of Thonet as a pioneer of modern furniture
bringing its various phases to life: invention of the bentwood process, mass production, tubular steel
as a new material, invention of the cantilever chair and more.
El Museum Thonet en la sede empresarial de Frankenberg, al norte de Hesse, presenta la historia
de la empresa Thonet desde su fundación en 1819 con numerosos objetos expuestos, lienzos y foto-
grafías. Se inauguró en 1989, 100 años después de que se fundara la planta de Thonet en Franken-
berg. En su propio museo, se visualiza y revive la historia de Thonet como pionero del mueble
moderno: la invención del proceso de madera curvada, producción de masas, el nuevo material de
acero tubular, la invención del modelo autooscilante y mucho más.
