According to Ray Kurzweil, Medical Nanotechnology may eventually give us the ability to live indefinitely.

What is Nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology is the practice of controlling matter on an atomic and molecular scale. The application of Nanotechnology in medicine refers to treating disease at this molecular level. With this new technology, procedures would be non-invasive and treat only the diseased area or organ of the body.

Targeted drug delivery

Typically, drugs are delivered throughout the body through oral ingestion. With Nanotechnology, delivery of medicine would be concentrated solely on the tissue that is infected, which may reduce side effects.

Medical Imaging

Nanoparticles may be used to illuminate the cellular interior in order to reveal processes that take place over hours or even days. For example, the quantum dot is attracted to specific proteins within a part of a cell and glows when exposed to light.

Cancer Therapies

Nanotechnology will eventually be able to rapidly detect cancer in cells even if the disease only occurs in a small percentage of them. New and unique therapeutic methods of treating cancer are being formed as well. Typically, a patient diagnosed would receive treatment either through surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy. However, these procedures all pose a risk to the other healthy cells in their bodies. Nanotechnology would allow only those cells with cancer to be targeted and treated.
