HIGHER EDUCATION IN FRANCEHigher education in France is divided into universities and
“Grandes Ecoles” :
- On the one hand, the universities offer technological, career-
oriented or core courses.
- On the other hand, the “Grandes Ecoles” are prestigious
institutions, specific to France. They have a selective admission
policy, i.e there are fewer students than in universities.
The degree system of the “Grande Ecoles” enables students to
apply directly for a Master degree or, for master graduates, to
prepare a Doctor degree.
The “Grandes Ecoles graduates” are highly sought after on the
international job market.
FRENCH ENGINEERING SCHOOLSIn the 18th century, the central government created its own
schools for a new field of studies : engineering.
About 30,000 new engineers graduate each year across the
whole scientific and engineering spectrum, from some 230
engineering schools.
Engineering school studies comprise a 5 year curriculum,
designed to incorporate students at different levels within the
curriculum, depending on their post-secondary education. The
first two years of the course can be completed in “CPGE”s
(preparatory classes for “Grandes Ecoles”).
Engineering School common features :
• admission through an entrance examination ;
• a single degree : only one type of degree is awarded, the «
diplôme d’ingénieur » (which includes the name of the School
awarding the degree). That degree is the equivalent of a Master
degree, recognised throughout the European Union ;
*School of Engineering, Buisness School, Shool of Architecture, Veterinary School…
** CPGE : preparatory classes of Grandes Ecoles : 2 years of postsecondary studies to prepare stu-
dents for the entrence exam to the Grandes Ecoles
• the curriculum always involves 5 years of study. The course
comprises 5 years of continuous higher education studies, but the
organisation and timing can vary between the programmes ;
• every school undergoes a regular comprehensive review ;
• the schools provide a robust scientific core programme, closely
geared to professional needs.

ENAC’s historyThe “Ecole Nationale de l’Aviation Civile” (ENAC) was founded in Orly (adjacent to Paris)
in 1949, in a rapidly expanding commercial aviation context. Its purpose was to recruit the
men and women who would be working in all fields of air transport, both on the ground
and in the air, and to provide them with harmonised and consistent training as well.
In 1968, ENAC was transferred to Toulouse, in the heart of the Rangueil scientific complex
in a particularly appropriate scientific and technical environment. Its close neighbours are :
ISAE (former SUPAERO and ENSICA), Centre d’Etudes et de Recherches de Toulouse (CERT-
ONERA), Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES), Laboratoire d’Automatique et d’Analyse
des Systèmes (LAAS-CNRS) and Université Paul Sabatier (UPS). It merged with the SEFA
(Service d’Exploitation de la Formation Aéronautique) on January 1, 2011. ENAC is a unique
example : it is the only aviation-oriented university in Europe offering a wide and complete
panel of aeronautics-oriented training programmes and activities, serving the aeronautical
world, and particulary the air transport sector.

AB-INITIO TRAINING
PROGRAMMES
ENAC Engineer (IENAC)This multi-disciplinary training is aimed at activities in the ae-
rospace field. An ENAC engineer usually works in the aerospa-
ce industry (aircraft manufacturers, electronic equipment ma-
nufacturers, information technology), in air transport (airlines,
airports), in the public sector of the the Direction Générale
de l’Aviation Civile (French General Directorate of Civil Avia-
tion) and in many associated sectors. The third year is entirely
dispensed in English and a 22 weeks internship abroad or in
France must be made.
Air Transport Pilot (EPL)As a part of the national training system set up by the French
Ministry of Transport, ENAC is involved in the theoretical trai-
ning of air transport pilots. Students who graduate from that
course are usually integrated by French or foreign airlines.
Aircraft Dispatcher (TAE)It is a distinctly professional training programme : students
who complete this course join airlines and organisations in
charge of airport management, especially flight planning and
preparation tasks.
Air Navigation Control Engineer (ICNA)This professionally-oriented training programme prepares all
the students to be part of the “Direction Générale de l’Aviation
Civile”. Hence, the ICNAs will work in Air Traffic Control.
Electronics Engineer for Air Safety Systems (IESSA)It is a professionally-oriented training programme with two
internships during the three years. The IESSA students join
the “Direction Générale de l’Aviation Civile”, and are then in
charge of the development, installation and maintenance of
air navigation equipment.
Master Pro IHM /Human-Machine interactionsThe “Master Pro” (Advanced Study Degree) is a course,
training high level professional specialists in the design
and development of interactive applications, controlling the
techniques suitable for data processing and those resulting
from the field of human factors.
This “Master Pro” is awarded by the University Toulouse 1
Capitole, in cooperation with ENAC.
Aeronautical engineer (in China)In partnership with the other Grandes Ecoles Aéronautiques,
(ENSMA and ISAE) ENAC organises an aeronautical engineering
course at the French-Chinese Aeronautics Institute in Tianjin,
China. The six-year course is in French and is based on a French
style of education.
Senior Technician in Civil Aviation Design and Ope-
rations (TSA)The “Direction Générale de l’Aviation Civile” employs TSA’s in
a number of different positions : aerodrome traffic controllers,
aeronautical information managers, assistant engineers, main-
tenance managers, etc..
Master’s degree in International Air Transport Operations Management Master degree (IATOM)International diploma with a 2-year curriculum of theoretical
and practical courses in English, training high-level executives,
capable of organising the operation of an air transport system,
with a complete control of all its aspects.

Corporate relationsENAC is in the heart of Europe’s foremost aerospace hot spot. This
extraordinary position allows us to work side by side with promi-
nent groups and companies, research labs and institutes, and en-
gineering and consulting firms. It has also allowed us to build solid
ties with industrial circles.
Our partnerships with these companies can take on a number of
forms :
• company experts lecturing at ENAC,
• companies taking in students on internships and projects,
• tailoring studies and research programmes around business-firm
goals,
• running training courses for company engineers and managers,
• meeting and exchanging with companies in a number of fo-
rums.
International exchangesNew exchanges agreements nowadays exist with China, with the
Tsinghua University, and the Sinno-European Institute of Civil Avia-
tion, integrated to the Civil Aviation University of China.
In the frame of the European Socrates Programme, ENAC has had a
long tradition to welcome international students from partner uni-
versities which have subscribed to this programme. The exchange
is based on a period of one or two semesters, during which the
foreign students attend all or part of the tuition, and are integrated
into an ENAC engineering class.
Exchange agreements have already been established with the fol-
lowing European universities : Berlin, Braunschweig and Darms-
tadt (Germany), Tampere (Finland), KTH in Stockholm (Sweden),
University of Beira Interior in Covilha (Portugal), UPC Catalonia
Polytechnic University in Barcelona (Spain), Bristol and Cranfield
Universities (United Kingdom) as well as with the 25 European Ae-
ronautical Universities of the Pegasus network.
A further training centreOver the years, this has become a major activity and has essenti-
ally developed in specific fields, where ENAC has acquired a know-
how which is recognised all over the world : air traffic, electronic
systems, information technology, aeronautical techniques, safety,
languages and social sciences.
With nearly 500 sessions organised every year (on 300 different
themes), and with an audience of almost 5,000 trainees per year
(from the public and private sectors, both French and foreign), ENAC
plays an essential part in further training for national and interna-
tional civil aviation.

PUBLIC MEANS OF TRANSPORT1 / Underground line B
«Faculté de Pharmacie» station.
2/ Bus line 78 «ENAC» bus stop.
3/ Since november 2007, you can rent a
bike in Toulouse from one of the 242 doc-
king stations equipped with more than
2800 bikes.
The first 30 minutes are free.
You’ll need a visa card to pay a deposit of
150 euros (which isn’t debited when you re-
turn the bike) or you can apply for a day, a
month or a day subscription (25 euros for
one year) and in that case you’ll received
a personnal card so no need to have a de-
posit. The docking stations are easily seen
because they are always at the bottom of
bilboard advertising. There’s a docking sta-
tion just in front of ENAC entrance. Read

ALCOHOL CONSUMPTIONThere is a regulation framing the consumption of alcohol on the campus :
the «Charte alcool» is signed by the organizers. This «Charter» is a contract off trust
principale, it doesn’t tend to repress nor to prohibit the consumption of alcohol, but to
prevent risky behavior. It encourages to consider the prevention as part of the party
and not as an obstacle.
It is applied to the school since 2007 following the creation of a group against addic-
tion in the «CGE» which is «reflecting» on risk behaviours among students.
The «Charter» can be read at the student association «ASSO».
