SOMETHING ABOUT THE MACHINE

this machine is a pretext, an excuse. it's a tool to discuss matters, a meta-thought device, a (self-)learning process, a social technology that works like a warehouse of errors and frustrations. the machine is an open process of construction, deconstruction and mutation. this machine wants to be a method, a manifesto, a machine. it refuses to be an art work and because of this it will never be complete. The final result is a weird-looking thing (an "esperpento"). The machine is a reflexion about the dynamics of collective creation, about the possible (and impossible) displacement of the notion of code

The Absurd Machine of the Possible Impossible

beeing a process, the machine has had various versions: 1) V0.1 "the black box" Reflections about: - criticism and visibilization of the absurdity of human-machine interaction - technologies in our lives - opaque VS transparent technologies - physical and social body fragmentation carried out by the technology

Page 5: liwoli_machine workshop
Page 6: liwoli_machine workshop

2) V0.1.5

(ABORTED

VERSION)

"goddess

machine"

- machine as oracle - faith in technology - interaction as a ritual

Page 7: liwoli_machine workshop

3) V0.2 "looking for rizoma (and its failure)" Reflections about: - collective technologies, collective creation, collective processes - processes of interchange - relation between freedom, rules and goals in collective creation - expanded notion of the concept of technology

HOW DOES IT WORK? THE SYSTEM (the input) tools: arduino, processing materials: whatever (recycled)

Model for Optimizing Randomness: Mozart's musical dice game ..being a composer without knowing the rules

From being a composer without knowing the rules... To being an oracle without knowing the ??????

DEMO

Page 12: liwoli_machine workshop

WORKING TOGETHER.. What are we going to do? 1. Building the discourse of the machine (collaborative experimental writing) 2. Building the input modules (eletronics and arduino) 3. Customize the modules (crafty things) 4. Put everything together (processing and being patient) 5. Arrange the exhibition space 6. If { we can drink a beer after that} Then {we will become superheroes} Or else {we will die}

Page 13: liwoli_machine workshop

WORKING TOGETHER..

How we planned to work? We had designed a work methodologies with decision nodes.... ....BUT -----TIME IS AGAINST US-----

Structure: IF { [N1] [2.1] [3] } THEN { [N2] [2.2] [4] } ELSE { [N3] [2.2] [5]}

1 noun

2.1 action

condition

2.2 action result

3 place

4 adverb

5 why?

A Napoleon runs away eats an apple

in the wardrobe

quitely because its funny

B Your grandmother

falls in love will die in the kitchen

slowly without an explanation

C This computer

flies to the moon

will explode

behind this screen

fast because it's sunday

Page 17: liwoli_machine workshop

Linguistic structure: Conditional - IF Statement

Page 18: liwoli_machine workshop

Some necessary rules 1. NOUN = who? / what? - must be 3rd person 2.1. Action - condition. What does he/she/it do? - must be 3rd person - must be present simple - intransitive / transitive+direct object: runs / eats an apple 2.2 Action - result. What does he/she/it do? - must be 3rd person - must be present simple OR future simple. - intransitive / transitive+direct object: runs / eats an apple 3. Place. Where? 4. Adverb. In what way? / how? 5. Reason. Why?

Building the modules

2ª part: design the modules why craft?

bricoleur VS. engineer

Page 25: liwoli_machine workshop

Moduls will be made with waste material looking for differents types of interaction and without observing the traditional desing paradigms
