Purpose of Study A Reason behind conducting a survey on “Trends in higher education after 12
th Commerce” was clear as
most of the units of MAM syllabus like Business Mathematics, Business Statistics and Computer
Application’s practical aspects are covered from collection of data to analysis of data. Students are explained
the importance of research work and aspect of practical field work for developing various leadership and
entrepreneurship skill from the very beginning of their college life. So in above processes 18 groups of
MAM Sem-1 students consisting of 2-3students per group were created.
With the help of this research each and every student had learned some practical aspect of public dealing,
co-operation, patience, team-work, management. This further helped them in personality development in
terms of; removal of stage fear, ability to converse in a team and developed research thinking abilities. It
would lead them ahead in life as they will keep more focus on How, What and Why type of questions
instead of cramming the syllabus.

In general terms the most influencing factor for selection of courses is future outcomes as 53% of the students are influenced and another strong influencing
factor is Infrastructure and Practical learning from the course. Least influencing factor is family background (21%), time duration for completion of course
(24%) and Proximity of the location where the course offered (26%). Here we can conclude that the younger generation is more influenced by the outcome of
the course and they are also ready to study for longer duration. Fees is also not one of the major constraints for selection of the course while Infrastructure and
Practical learning holds its importance in influencing the decision of the students.
If gender specific analysis is done then in male the major influencing factors are Future outcome (51%), Infrastructure (32%) while the least influencing factor
is proximity of location (27%). While in female Future outcomes (54%) and Practical learning from course (36%) plays a vital role as deciding factor for course
selection. While the least deciding factors in both are Family back ground, Fees and Proximity of location of the institute. So for younger generation even for
female location is least influencing factor for selection of course. Fees and time duration is a still concern for male students than in case of female students.
Researcher believes that as male mind set is for starting an early earning so they are focused on time duration of course more than female students. In case of
practical learning female students are more concerned than male students while selecting the courses.

Percentages and totals are based on respondents.
The English medium student trend is more towards B.Com around 40% while many students are also interested in C.A as well as in B.Com + MBA. While
ICWA, BCA + MBA and architecture courses are least attractive courses to English medium students. The students of Gujarati medium are mostly interested in
B.Com (60.1%) but there next preference is for C.A (28.4%) and third preference is for B.Com + MBA (27.5%). For them ICWA, Foreign education and
Architecture courses are not fascinating to them for future course. While the trend in other medium students like Hindi medium or some other is not significant
as from 1171 total students, they are not even 1%.
In analysis of a specific course options Gujarati medium students are more interested in traditional Bachelor degree such as B.Com while English medium
students are comparatively more interested in BBA compare to Gujarati medium students. Overall there is a similar trend seen in selection of courses like CA,
ICWA and Designing. In IPS/IAS, ICWA, BCA+MBA, CS and in BCA type courses Gujarati medium students are more attracted then English medium
students. While in courses like foreign education, BBA, BBA + MBA and Law are the courses in which English medium students are fascinated more than
other medium students. Also from the above table conclusion can be drawn that English medium students are more attracted towards applied courses and non-
traditional courses while Gujarati medium students are likely to select the traditional successful courses for bright academic future.

Students whose fathers occupation is Business mostly opt for B.Com (around 49%) then attracted towards C.A (23.4%) and BBA + MBA (22.3%). While the
students whose father is a professional having profession generally opt for B.Com, C.A and B.Com + MBA courses and the students whose father is in service
sector or doing service generally go for B.Com, B.Com + MBA and C.A as career goals.
So general analysis shows the development of an emerging trend which leads to integrated MBA as career goal among the students.

2. Conclusion
From the research the conclusion drawn are as follows:
1. Top priority individually remains for B.Com as career option amongst the 12th
Commerce students.
2. The emerging trend among the sample is integrated MBA, as cumulatively this stands
as the top priority amongst all the options, in terms of courses.
3. In recent times, a study reveals that English medium students are interested in
exploring emerging fields while Gujarati medium students still opt for the traditional
successful career options.
4. There is also change in course selection pattern in Gujarat board and CBSE students.
Due to insufficient data of ICSE and other boards, they are not considered for analysis
here.
5. Courses related to Designing are more popular among female students after B.Com
while courses like C.A and B.Com + MBA are fascinating for male students after
B.Com.
6. Future outcomes, Practical learning and Infrastructure facilities play the vital role in
influencing decisions regarding career choices.
7. The Proximity of Location is least affecting factor amongst the male students while for
female students it is the family background.
